Makal (daughter), a review

Makal is a movie I am sure I will watch again and again. It is a relevant story with a great script, talented actors, and flawlessly produced.

When I first heard about this movie, I did not expect it to be such a good one and there were not many ads for it probably because good stuff does not need ads as such.

Word-of-mouth publicity has that this movie is good and will not be forgotten any time soon.

Sathyan Anthikad is a loved director and he is known to make movies that reflect the life of the common man in Kerala. All of his movies are still watched which speaks a lot about his work.

Plus, this movie brings back veteran actors and does justice to their roles.

The plot

'Makal' is the story of a family and relationships. We get to see the life of a mother and daughter who are very close to each other even though the teenager is hard to manage. The dad returns home after losing his job in Dubai. Soon, he gets to experience the frustrations of a parent when he tries to deal with his moody daughter. Meanwhile his wife's rich brother and family spare no occasion to belittle his lack of education. His wife lands a government job and she leaves with his encouragement.

A few days and arguments later, the daughter leaves in a rush and drives off in their car even though she does not have a license. She hits a person on the road and her dad helps her rescue him and they treat him at home. Meanwhile, he finds out that the person is a thug from the neighboring state but he does not harm them and tells the daughter that her dad is a very good person. The movie ends on a happy note.

It may seem that the storyline is not much but then this is a family-oriented movie that just drives home the message that no matter what parents are always to be respected whether or not they are rich or poor.

The comic dialogues by Naslen are good but he could have done better. Jayaram and Meera Jasmin have performed very well as the parents and the newcomer as the teenager is also very good at her job. I am happy that they decided to bring in a new face instead of asking the usual actors.
