🎬 2026 Movie #3 | The Long Walk (2025)

January Movie Marathon Month
I have grown a bit of a tradition in January to watch all the 'Youtuber Top 10 Films Of The Year' videos to catch up with everything that was potentially good in the previous year. I still have quite some to go and started to make regular reviews on the ones that I watched so far.

The Long Walk (6.9/10)
The setup for the story is both straightforward and a bit confusing. Similar to in the Hunger Games, there is a yearly event where 50 boys take part in an event where the last to remain wins a big price. It feels like they all somehow volunteer to take part and are selected which feels rather confusing as nobody in their right mind would enter something like this as the odds to die are just crazy high.

The movie starts off with the main character who is driven to the event by his mom an says goodbye. This is followed by him joining the group who is about to start the long walk.
At that point the "villain colonel" guy comes in his truck to explain the rules of the long walk, and they are off for the journey.
The Rules
Basically all the contestants start the race and they are forced to keep walking at a pace of at leasy 4 Miles an hour. If they go slower they get a 1st warning, 10 seconds later of they still don't resume they get a 2nd warning, and a 3rd warning while they are executed on the 4th warning. If they have a warning, it resets after I think an hour of proper walking. The last one to keep standing wins the race, gets a whish of their choice and a lot of money.
The Good Things
Some things I really enjoyed about this movie. It is filmed in a beautiful way with nice scenaries while the acting and the characters are also quite enjoyable. As something no-brain to watch when you feel like that it also is quite suited. The movie is also not too long and it's fairly easy to watch while you don't miss too much at times when you get a bit dirstracted.
The Things The Don't Work
The problem for me with the entire setup is that it makes no real sense, there is no shock surprise when the first guy gets shot and I also had no real empathy as everyone kind of volunteered for it. All the contestants are also overly supportive toward eachother which contradicts the facts that they are opponents with their life on the line. The entire plot and how it plays out by the middle of the movie is also kind of inderectly laid out so at that time it was pretty clear to me how exactly it was going to end.

Conclusion
If you like 'battle Royale' type movies and want something no-brain that is easy to watch, The Long Walk is something suited for sure. While I enjoyed watching, the flawed setup kind of removed any emotional response from me while the way this movie ended was really predictable. Still in terms of enjoyment I score it a 6.9/10. I'm quite sure that I will remember the main setup some years from now but not much more.
