🎬 2026 Movie #4 | Sentimental Value (2025)

January Movie Marathon Month
I have grown a bit of a tradition in January to watch all the 'Youtuber Top 10 Films Of The Year' videos to catch up with everything that was potentially good in the previous year. I started the month strong but once the football season started again the freshness to watch movies in the evening faded a bit. I'm at 8 so far this year and I likely extend watching 2025 movies into February.

Sentimental Value (6.4/10)
The movie lasts 2 Hours and 15 Minutes and is part in Norweigian Language and part in English. I generally like these kind of movies that have a combination on an an American and Foreighn feel to it (especially Asian Movies that are this way like The Farewell & Past Lives).

I would say that this movie isn't really that plot driven but instead more character-driven and intimate. It's about how objects carry emotional weight—and how people use that weight to avoid or confront unresolved relationships. The Big family house and what happened there, is a central setting of the movie. There is are 2 sisters who have a famous Director father who wants to make a movie with a plot which he wrote to be played by one of his daughters. She refuses and an american actress plays the role instead.

While the movie itself is shot and directed beautifully and there is no issue whatsoever with the acting, it simply wasn't for me and there were things that just annoyed me. After watching it for an hour, I was waiting for something to actually happen but it never really came. I don't have any emotinal baggage with family which makes it hard for me to relate to this movie in any way but I can understand how other people enjoy something like this. To me, just nothing happened in this movie in a bad way as I do enjoy 'slice of life movies' that are about nothing like 'Wendy & Lucy", Jeanne Dielman, & Showing Up. This one simply didn't do it for me as it was mainly just drama for the sake of drame without any comical note to it or a story that was intriguing.

What Really Annoyed me...
One of the things that can really annoy me in movies is when they are talking about something that is supposed to be great and amazing but it either isn't shown or what they show about it is just mediocre or bad. This was fully the same in Sentimental Value as the entire movie they are talking about the script of this movie as if it's something out of this world that 'you have to read' while what was shown from it was just weak and had no emotinal charge whatsoever.
I have the same with movies that have music, or fictional characters in them that are praised, the music itself needs to be really good in order for the movie to hold up. if it is, it really can lift thing way up there, but if it isn't, it just drags the entire movie down.

Conclusion
I can see why there are people who enjoy a movie like this, but it simply wasn't for me as I see it as the most overrated 2025 movie in all the lists. After an hour, I was wondering if something actually would happen and I kind of forced myself to watch until the end. A dissapointing 6.4/10 and I'm rather generous on that score as I can't say it's a bad movie, it's just not for me.
