🎬 2026 Movie #6 | Bugonia (2025)

January Movie Marathon Month
I have grown a bit of a tradition in January to watch all the 'Youtuber Top 10 Films Of The Year' videos to catch up with everything that was potentially good in the previous year. We are now well into February and I'm still limiting myself into watchin 2025 movies.

Yorgos Lanthimos Movies
This director over the years has really managed to build a reputation to the point where many look out for his next movie each time. I first heard of him when a friend recommended Dogtooth which was one of his early works. I still have to watch that one though. The first movie I saw of him was The Lobster as the premise really intrigued me "In a dystopian near future, according to the laws of The City, single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or they're transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.". It's one of those movies that always stuck with me because of the absurd premise and the general critique it gave on the pressure from society to have a relationship. I also went to see his next movie The Killing Of A Sacred Deer which I don't remember that much of but It did leave an impression on me. After that, all his movies starred Emma Stone with especially Poor Things being quite good even though that one had just a bit too much sex in it. I didn't really enjoy Kinds of Kindness which were 3 different stories with the same actors (Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe) but I still looked forward to the next one.

Overall, Yorgos Lanthimos for sure is an interesting director but you need to be prepared for strange movies often with a deeper meaning and it's not something I'm always up to. So you need the right timing to watch his movies but they are certainly recommended.
Bugonia (7.3/10)
After being somewhat dissapointed by Kinds Of Kindness, my expectations were not too high for Bugonia and I feared something very weird again. These things helped me to enjoy it as the story is quite straightforward even though the surface story (two men kidnapping a powerful woman because they think she’s an alien) is really just a vehicle for deeper themes.

Best To Watch Not Knowing Anything
I went into this one only really knowing the basic plotline and having avoided any kind of trailer or spoiler which I think was the best way. I knew it was a Lanthimos movie so I expected something strange (which it didn't really was this time around), along with his usual favorite actors Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons.
One of the fun things about this movie is this question you ask if she might actually be an alien which is played with quite a bit and it keeps things interesting. The visuals and the acting also were excellent as always and it was just a good movie while at the the same time nothing mind blowing or that will stay with me for a long time to come. So a Solid 7.3/10 and certainly recommended for people who enjoy movies from this director.
