This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

About Doctor Who

I can easily say that Doctor who (modern era 2005 -> 2015) is one of my favorite series of all time before things really went on a decline.

The Premise of the story is that there is a Time Lord who is the last of his kind who calls himself the Doctor. He's somewhat of a super hero but his traits are different, his super Power is that he has 2 Hearts (extra kindness) and can regenerate i n case he dies, his transportatioin is the Tardis which is a time machine in the shape of a police box (which people call to find help) and his weapon is a Sonic Screwdriver (Which fixes things). He's this very smart empathic guy who basically lives forever and travels trought time and space always finding a human companion to travel with. Ultimately he's quite lonely as he's the last of his kind and always needs to say goodbye to the ones that get clos to him. His tardis always tends to land in places where some kind of help is needed and there are many enemies he's facing (The Daleks, The Cybermen, the Wheeping Angels, ...). Instead of fighting them, he always first tries to talk them over.

As an intelligent nerd who has a high sense of morality, this show is just super relatable and hits all the right notes. It also really feeds into the inner child in me and also to the adult which is something I tend to enjoy. The main themes of compassion, kindness, doing the right thing, friendship, exploration just really work well and there is also nothing of real violence, sex, addiction, infidelity, ... present in the show while the sci-fi setting is just really nerdy. At times it also gets a bit scary and generally it just had excellent writing with a main plotline over the season and individual standalone episodes.

Since the doctor can regenerate, it leaves a lot of room to keep the show fresh and every couple of seasons there is a new doctor and a new companion. This cycle of saying goodbye to someone and embracing a new era has worked very well until they screwed it all up going way too woke.

The downfall of Doctor Who

While Series 1 to 10 generally were just excellent across the board, for season 13 they kind of changed things as it was time for a female doctor and instead of 1 companion they had 3 which were a young black guy, and old white dude and a pakistani women while the stories often resolved around themes like "plastic waste is bad" and things like that. There also was a new showrunner and things just were not the same with the views declining. It was also the time when I actually stopped wacthing. I did eventually binge them with an eye to give the new rebrand a try after it got aquired by Disney+

The 14th Series was called Season 1 in the hope to attract new viewers and there was back a dynamic of a Male doctor and a young female companion. The old showrunner was also brought back along with some special episodes inbetween season bringing back David Tennant as the doctor who is a fan favorite. However, for the new doctor, they had to take a black guy and make him gay which still kept the woke virus into it. It's not that the new doctor and even the previous female doctor where doing a bad job, it's more that the stories were no longer good and original enough. In Season 1 (Series 14) there was just 1 episode that really did it for me and brought back some of the old Doctor Who Magic which was the episode named 73 Yards

Doctor Who Season 2 (2025) (5.9/10)

I watched this season which had again just 8 episodes on a week-by-week timeframe but it was not so that I was looking forward to each new episode watching it the moment it was released. Instead it was so that I kind of had to tell myself that I still needed to watch it. All of this in the hope of at least having 1 great episide which made it worth it. However, this never really came and it overall was another big dissapointment.

The overall story arch of Season 2 was pretty much the same as Season 1 with 1 mysterious Character (Misses Flood) returning each episode somewhere who turned out to be one of the old Doctor who Villains (The Rani) in a reveal nobody really cared about as only the die hard fans ever watched the pre-2025 era of the show. This all lead to an anti-climax and a weak plotline.

Individual Episodes

Joy To The World was the christmas special which has a character that returns near the end of season 2 so it's a must watch. I honestly barely remembered it when the character returned.

The Robot Revolution introduced the new Companion named Belinda and was mostly visuals over story. I liked the gimmich that the enemies didn't compute the 9th word of every sentece but overall it was pretty weak I would say. I do like Belinda but overall there was very little of her in the season as she mostly was there without much of a dynamic growing between her and the doctor.

Lux kind of felt like a gimmick episode with a cartoon character coming to life and overall it was kind of mediocre even though I didn't hate it.

The Well was the episode I enjoyed the most as it gave some of those old doctor who vibes and it's also somewhat of a follow up to an old Episode. Despite all this, it also is not one that will be too memorable.

Lucky Day brought back last seasons companion and had a really lame twist at the end which set some things up for the end of the season.

The Story & The Engine I would say was a good attempt at a classic doctor who story but it also just fell short.

The Interstellar Song Contest was the episode that tapped into real time events with Eurovion on the same day. I also found this plot to be just too weak.

Wish World & The Reality War was the season final double episode. The first one had some ok aspects in it but overall the vilain reveals were more of a gimmich and there are also just way too many uninteresting characters in the entire Unit storyline. The ending 'twist' was also more of the same deperation attempts to bring back what used to be but it likely will make things worse.

Conclusion

Series 1 to 10 of Doctor who are a blast and really worth the watch especially if you like nerdy shows and have a high sense of justice and morality. Generally it's said to watch the episode named Blink (Season 3 Episode 10) as a standalone episodes to see if Doctor who is something for you. However, the new seasons now on Disney+ and starting from the 13th doctor it hasn't been worth it anymore. The only reason I still watch is in the hope to get 1 banger episode like 73 Yards from the previous season. However, this time this was not there so only a dissapointing 5.9/10 for Doctor Who Season 2 as the magic that this show used to have is totally gone.

I have read a lot of comments and opinions about Doctor Who for years but I didn't really watch the show, so I don't have idea what is it about. Well, I didn't know until now haha. It seems interesting, at least the first 10 seasons, as you said.

Also, if you wanna watch another anime series, I would recommend Dororo.

Thanks for the advice, will check Dororo out.

When it comes down to Doctor Who, it's one of those shows where you can feel that 'it was made for you' which was the case for me and I'm glad that I started watching it one day. The first season isn't the best but it also only took me a couple episodes to really get going. At this point though I gave up hope that they ever make it the same again but I'm glad for what it did bring in previous seasons.
