The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. Obsession is one of those movies that I heard good things about and saw the trailer which didn't fully convince me. However, it were the very high scores and the somewhat hype around this one that actually got me to see it. This along with the fact that I also need to fill my days here in Hua Hin a bit. So a couple Sundays ago, I went to watch it in the early afternoon with my Girlfriend and I now understand the hype about it.

YouTubers Turning Film Makers...

This movie is another case where someone with a passion and a Youtube channel turns into a film maker with great success. It was written and directed by Curry Barker who has the That's a Bad Idea Channel making some shortfilms. He got I thing 750k dollars from someone who believed in him to make Obsession which turned into a phenomenon grossing over 200 million worldwide and beating ET in the long lasting record on rising visitors week after week.

There are more of these youtubers turing succesfull film makers in Bo Brunham who made Eight Grade which I really loved and watched twice. There are also the Philippou brothers who directed Talk To Me and Bring Her Back which I both enjoyed especially the first one.

Obsession (7.7/10)

Basically the story in this horror movie is pretty straightforward in that a guy who is in love with a girl uses a "One Wich Willow" asking for the girl to love him more than anyone else in the world which turns out to work creating a really freaky situation.

If you watch the trailer you more or less know what to expect and I did feel that it made me see most of the actual movie while at the same time I never at any point dropped my attention and enjoyed the ride that it delivered.

The star of the movie without a doubt is Inde Navarrette who just put down a perfect performance as Nikki and shot herself to stardom instantly as an unknown actor. I also think she always deserves the oscar of best female role. The movie has a weird and kind of uncanny vibe which I had not seen anywhere else before which also is one of the reasons likely why it gets such a good score.

Conclusion
I really enjoyed watching this movie expecially together with my girlfriend in the cinema as she jumped and grabbed me a couple times on some of the scary bits. The story itself isn't that spectacular and mostly shown in the trailer but the acting and the weird vibe in this movie might make it a future cult classic. A Solid 7.7/10 and one that gets a place in my list of the better horror movies along with It Follows, The Babadook, Barbarian, Talk To Me, Weapons, ...
