With this post I am participating in the Contest organized by Movies & TV Shows entitled: [Who is your favorite actor and actress?](https://hive.blog/hive-166847/@moviesonhive/contest-who-is-your-favorite-actor-and-actress.

Having seen actors and actresses of all ages and in the most disparate roles for so many years, it is somewhat difficult for me to make a strict selection of just two of them.

There are classic actors with memorable performances. But there are also new actors, who we usually discover in the series of the current streaming video platforms, who are leaving their mark.

Peaky Blinders and Vikings for example have given two not indifferent accolades to two excellent actors like Cillian Murphy and Travis Fimmel in the role of their characters Thomas Shelby and Ragnar respectively, to cite just two isolated examples. Not that they were previously unknown. But if the series brought them to a (deserved) popular fan consensus.

I am quite a traditionalist and select very carefully the series to watch (I do a search on reviews and opinions on the Web before deciding).

For this reason the actors (actor and actress so as not to incur the famous gender issue) I have selected may not be current. But I do it because they have remained engraved in my memory (them and their characters) with such a perfect mimicry between actor/actress and character that it is difficult to guess where one begins and the other ends.

They are, on the one hand, as an actor, Daniel Day-Lewis for his masterful performance in My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown, Academy Oscar for best actor in 1990, personification of the real life of Christy Brown, Irish writer, painter and poet who as a result of an acute cerebral palsy was practically paralyzed except for his left foot. Nowadays, the term tetraplegic is used to designate these cases. A few years ago the big screen showed us again a similar case (not real) based on Jeffery Deaver's novel The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington (playing the quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme) and Anjelina Jolie (in the role of the assistant Amelia Sachs).

The difference between the two films is the enormous human content of the former, while the latter focuses on a police investigation.

On the other hand, if I have to select an actress, also for the same reason of the mimicry of the characters, I have to choose Charlize Theron and her performance in the film Monster, for which she deservedly won the Oscar in 2002.

When some critics asked Charlize why a beauty of her caliber accepted to play a character so unpleasant, ugly and out of her usual roles, she replied that she had always wanted to make a film directly or indirectly related to her early youth. Charlize Theron is to remember that she had a difficult childhood with an alcoholic and violent father who died in an argument with her mother who shot in self-defense. It is no coincidence if the character she plays is a woman guilty of murdering seven men who systematically raped her. It is also the true story of Aileen Wuornos, executed in 2002.

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of those actors who has rarely made any low level film. I don't know of any film with these characteristics. Like Jack Nicholson or Tom Hanks to cite other examples.

But his thing goes far beyond good performances. It has to do with the selection of the character. To the point that in 2017 at barely 60 years of age he decided to quit acting.

My Left Foot finds him at the height of his artistic maturity, in the middle of his career that began in 1982 with Gandhi. That same year, 1989, Daniel Day-Lewis filmed in the Argentine Patagonia Eternal Smile of New Jersey, the highest grossing film of his career.

When the autobiographical theme is approached in a film, there are serious risks. One is to get bogged down in a biography that respects the real facts, but is anodyne from the point of view of cinematic spectacle.

The other risk is to stray too far from the true story to build a kind of "reality" - to use a current term and not because it tries to make a comparison between the two shows, with the sole purpose of making a "digestible" commercial product and, if possible, a box-office hit.

My Left Foot moves away from both extremes and places Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in an equidistant point between them. Hence its importance and value as a cinematic product. Justly recognized by the Hollywood Academy by awarding him with the statuette for best actor.

There are memorable moments and scenes as when he contemplates the sea from the edge of the cliff and the immediate sensation that the viewer perceives is that of a suicide attempt. Much credit also goes to Irish director Jim Sheridan.

Or when the plot presents us with a (real) family picture composed of 22 people, including parents and children, almost half of whom have died at an early age. With a perfect setting of the Dublin of the years 1930-1950, before and after the Second World War. With poverty, famine and a society that did not accept people who had a certain (and serious in this case) physical handicap. Much less mental.

The left foot represents for Christy Brown the only means of communication with the outside world and hence her endless and relentless struggle to perfect the use of it.

Daniel Day-Lewis' performance makes all this into a true work of art, with no scenes of commiseration or pity. On the contrary, a force of will that at times seems inhuman.

The first word she manages to write is "mama" as the first word pronounced by newborns. And then she begins to paint and becomes an artist famous for her works in "naïf" style.

However, she reaches a certain point where she realizes that without a source of inspiration she cannot go on. So he begins to read and with the help of his brothers and a typewriter he continues to improve himself because he knows that to reach that goal there are no limits, especially in his case.

His story is a tragic one, where there is no end, and this is also conveyed in an extraordinary way by Day-Lewis.

At a certain point it would seem that the rest of the cast does not exist: it is him, the director and the camera.

With My Left Foot Daniel Day-Lewis reaches the definitive professional consecration as an actor, after a selection of beautiful films with extraordinary performances.

It is no coincidence if in his entire career he has been nominated 6 times for the Oscar as best actor and has lifted the statuette 3 times. With director Sheridan he has made a true "work team", perfectionist even in the smallest details.

My Left Foot together with The Field, starring Leonardo Sbaraglia (1990), In the Name of the Father (1993) and The Boxer (1997) make up the quartet of films dedicated to Ireland directed by Jim Sheridan, at this point a true cult anthology in modern cinematography.

Perhaps if I had to establish a comparison I would do it with Philadelphia, that monumental movie with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, although the parameters of comparison are not always similar.

But there is always a disease or disability involved, the reaction of society - hypocritical and cruel - and the attitude of the affected person to carry out his or her destiny.

When this situation -real or not- is transferred to the cinema, it is necessary to look for real actors who can embody and give life again to those characters, which the passage of time will transform into memorable ones.

And Daniel Day-Lewis more than fulfills his mission, in this and other films.

Charlize Theron, a real "monster".

When writing my impressions about this actress, I remember one of the tips and examples given by the organizers of this contest.

I quote verbatim a part of the presentation of the post dedicated to the contest:
"... So if you like Johnny Depp's style, Zendaya's talent, Tom Cruise's smile, Charlize Theron's beauty, Jennifer Lawrence's movies or George Clooney's hair, it's your time to express it!" The underline is mine.

Perhaps when I read these lines I remembered that truly phenomenal movie made by the South African actress, naturalized American and that I had the opportunity to see a few years ago outside my country.

It is Monster and if you ever thought of seeing a Charlize Theron totally stripped of her beauty, fattened (really) by production requirements, brutalized (what a credit to the makeup artists!), rude, vulgar, with stained skin and even despised, I advise you to see this movie. Unrecognizable, in other words.

Because apart from the editing work, props, makeup, scenery and so on, there is a work of Charlize Theron that not by chance won her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2004. And also the Golden Globe and the Berlin Bear among many other awards.

Even from the psychological point of view Theron has had to face a tough test. To get into the skin of this character who is diametrically opposed to what she is aesthetically in real life.

And she manages to blend in so well with the role that it is difficult to recognize at first glance. After looking at her attentively we can discover some features of her true physiognomy.

An unhappy life marked from early childhood of the one who is considered the first female serial killer in history.

Without falling into melodrama, the story manages to follow step by step the physical and moral decadence of a woman for whom the lack of scruples and morals was the constant of life.

The murders committed were "acts of justice" and in this way were interpreted even in the deepest part of her subconscious, until the last moments of her life before being condemned to capital punishment.

Special credit also goes to the film's director, newcomer Patty Jenkins, who together with Charlize Theron seems to develop frame after frame a circus-like acrobatic test without a net. It would be enough the slightest carelessness to fall into banality and yet they do not.

While the film leaves us with the bitter taste of pity, it also confronts us with the sense of justice by our own hands, because men accused of sexual violence are no less guilty. The paradigm of whether it is fair or just to penalize them in this way is beyond the scope of this post, but at certain moments the film leads us to think about it.

If the accused deserves capital punishment for what she has done, what punishment would these men deserve if they were alive?

No less than 30 nominations, 22 of which were first prizes.

Después de haber visto durante tantos años actores y actrices de todas las edades y en los roles más dispares, me resulta algo difícil hacer una selección estricta de solo dos de ellos.

Hay actores clásicos con interpretaciones memorables. Pero también hay actores nuevos, que descubrimos generalmente en las series de las actuales plataformas de streaming video, que van dejando su huella.

Peaky Blinders y Vikings por ejemplo le han dado dos espaldarazos no indiferentes a dos excelentes actores como Cillian Murphy y Travis Fimmel en el rol de sus personajes Thomas Shelby y Ragnar respectivamente, por citar solo dos ejemplos aislados. No es que antes fueran desconocidos. Pero si la serie los llevó a un (merecido) consenso de afición popular.

Soy bastante tradicionalista y selecciono con mucho cuidado las series a mirar (hago una búsqueda sobre reseñas y opiniones en la Web antes de decidirme).

Por este motivo los actores (actor y actriz para no incurrir en la famosa cuestión de género) que he seleccionado tal vez no sean actuales. Pero lo hago porque me han quedado grabados en la memoria (ellos y sus personajes) con una mimetización tan perfecta entre actor/actriz y personaje que es difícil acertar donde comienza uno y termina el otro.

Ellos son, por un lado, como actor, Daniel Day-Lewis por su magistral interpretación en Mi Pie Izquierdo, Óscar de la Academia como mejor actor en 1990, personificación de la vida real de Christy Brown escritor, pintor y poeta irlandés quien como consecuencia de una parálisis cerebral aguda quedó prácticamente paralizado a excepción de su pie izquierdo. Actualmente se usa el término tetrapléjico para designar estos casos. Hace algunos años la pantalla grande nos volvió a mostrar un caso similar (no real) basado en la novela de Jeffery Deaver El Coleccionista de Huesos con Denzel Washington (interpretando al detective tetrapléjico Lincoln Rhyme) y Anjelina Jolie (en el papel de la asistente Amelia Sachs).

La diferencia entre ambas películas es el enorme contenido humano de la primera, mientras la segunda se centra en una investigación policial.

En cambio si debo seleccionar una actriz, también por el mismo motivo de la mimetización de los personajes, debo elegir a Charlize Theron y su interpretación en la película Monster, por la cual ha merecidamente ganado el Óscar en el año 2002.

Cuando algunos críticos le preguntaron a Charlize por qué una belleza de su calibre aceptaba realizar un personaje tan desagrádale, feo y fuera de sus roles habituales les contestó que siempre había querido hacer una pelicula relacionada directa o indirectamente con su primera juventud. Charlize Theron es de recordar tuvo una infancia difícil con un padre alcoholizado y violento que murió en una discusión con su madre quien disparó en legítima defensa. No es una casualidad si el personaje que interpreta es una mujer culpable de asesinar a siete hombres que sistemáticamente la han violado. También es la historia real de Aileen Wuornos, ejecutada en 2002.

Daniel Day-Lewis es uno de esos actores que raramente ha hecho alguna película de bajo nivel. Particularmente no le conozco ninguna con estas características. Como Jack Nicholson o Tom Hanks por citar otros ejemplos.

Pero lo suyo va mucho más alla de buenas interpretaciones. Tiene que ver con la selección del personaje. A punto que en 2017 con apenas 60 años de edad decidió abandonar la actuación.

Mi Pie Izquierdo lo encuentra en el pleno de su madurez artística, en el medio de su carrera iniciada en 1982 con Gandhi. En ese mismo año 1989 Daniel Day-Lewis filma en la Patagonia argentina Eterna Sonrisa de Nueva Jersey la pelicula más taquillera de su carrera.

Cuando se aborda el tema autobiográfico en una película se corren serios riesgos. Uno es el de quedar empantanados en una biografía respetuosa de los hechos reales, pero anodina desde el punto de vista del espectáculo cinematográfico.

El otro riesgo es el de alejarse demasiado de la verdadera historia para construir una especie de "reality" -para usar un término actual y no porque trate de hacer un parangón entre ambos espectáculos, con el solo objeto de hacer un producto comercial "digerible" y, si es posible, taquillero.

Mi Pie Izquierdo se aleja de ambos extremos y coloca la actuación de Daniel Day-Lewis en un punto equidistante entre ambos. De ahí su importante y su valor como producto cinematográfico. Justamente reconocido por la Academia de Hollywood al premiarlo con la estatuilla como mejor actor.

Hay momentos y escenas memorables como cuando contempla el mar desde el borde mismo del acantilado y la inmediata sensación que percibe el espectadaor es el de un tentativo de suicidio. Mucho mérito va también al director irlandés Jim Sheridan.

O cuando la trama nos presenta un cuadro familiar (real) compuesto por 22 personas entre padres e hijos de los cuales casi la mitad ha fallecido en edad temprana. Con una perfecta ambientación de la Dublín de los años 1930-1950, antes y posteriroes a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Con pobreza, carestía y una sociedad que no aceptaba las personas que tenían un determinado (y grave en este caso) handicap físico. Mucho menos mental.

El pie izquierdo representa para Christy Brown el único medio de comunicación con el mundo externo y de ahí su lucha infinita y sin tregua por perfeccionar el uso del mismo.

La actuación de Daniel Day-Lewis hace que todo esto se transforme en una verdadera obra de arte, sin escenas de conmiseración o lástima. Por el contrario una fuerza de voluntad que a veces parece hasta inhumana.

La primera palabra que logra escribir es "mamá" como la primera palabra pronunciada por los recién nacidos. Y luego comienza a pintar y se transforma en una artista famoso por sus obras en estilo "naif".

Sin embargo llega a un cierto punto en el que se da cuenta de que sin una fuente de inspiración no puede seguir adelante. Y comienza a leer y ayudado por sus hermanos y una máquina de escribir sigue perfeccionándose porque sabe que para llegar a esa meta no hay límites, más en su caso.

Su historia en una historia trágica, donde no hay un final y también ello es transmitido en forma extraordinaria por Day-Lewis.

A un cierto punto parecería que el resto del reparto de actores no existiera: es él, el director y la cámara.

Con Mi Pie Izquierdo Daniel Day-Lewis alcanza la definitiva consagración profesional como actor, después de una selección de hermosas películas con actuaciones extraordinarias.

No es una casualidad si en toda su carrera ha sido nominado por 6 veces al Óscar como mejor actor y ha alzado la estatuilla 3 veces. Con el director Sheridan ha hecho un verdadero "equipo de trabajo" perfeccionista hasta en sus más mínimos detalles.

Mi Pie Izquierdo junto a El Campo, interpretada por Leonardo Sbaraglia (1990), En el nombre del padre (1993) y The Boxer (1997) componen el cuarteto de películas dedicadas a Irlanda dirigidas por Jim Sheridan, a este punto una verdadera antología de culto en la cinematografía moderna.

Tal vez si tuviera que establecer un parangón lo haría con Filadelfia esa pelicula monumental con Tom Hanks y Denzel Washington, aunque no siempre los parámetros de comparación sean similares.

Pero siempre hay una enfermedad o discapacidad de por medio, la reacción de la sociedad -hipócrita y cruel- y la actitud de la persona afectada para llevar adelante su destino.

Cuando esta situación -real o no- se traslada al cine hay que buscar verdaderos actores para que puedan encarnar y dar vida nuevamente a esos personajes, que el paso del tiempo transformara en memorables.

Y Daniel Day-Lewis cumple con creces su misión, en esta y en otras películas.

Charlize Theron, un verdadero "monstruo".

Al escribir mis impresiones sobre esta actriz se me imprimen en la memoria uno de los consejos y a su vez ejemplos que los organizadores de este concurso.

Cito textualmente una parte de la presentación del post dedicado al concurso:
"... Así que si te gusta el estilo de Johnny Depp, el talento de Zendaya, la sonrisa de Tom Cruise, la belleza de Charlize Theron, las películas de Jennifer Lawrence o el pelo de George Clooney, ¡es tu momento de expresarlo!" El subrayado es mío.

Tal vez cuando leí estas líneas me acordé de esa película verdaderamente fenomenal que había hecho la actriz sudafricana, naturalizada estadounidense y que tuve la ocasión de ver hace algunos años fuera de mi país.

Se trata de Monster y si alguna vez pensaron en ver a una Charlize Theron totalmente despojada de su belleza, engordada (realmente) por exigencias de la producción, embrutecida (qué mérito para los maquilladores!), grosera, vulgar, con la piel manchada y hasta despreciada les aconsejo que vean esta pelicula. Irreconocible, en otras palabras.

Porque aparte del trabajo de montaje, utilería, maquillaje, escenografía y demás, hay un trabajo de Charlize Theron que no por casualidad le valió el Óscar como mejor actriz en el año 2004. Y también el Globo de Oro y el Oso de Berlín entre otros tantos premios.

Hasta desde el punto de vista psicológico Theron ha tenido que afrontar una dura prueba. Meterse en la piel de ese personaje que es diametralmente opuesto a lo que, estéticamente, es en la vida real.

Y logra compenetrarse de tal manera con el rol que resulta difícilmente reconocible a primera vista. Luego de mirarla atentamente podemos descubrir algunos rasgos de su verdadera fisonomía.

Una vida desdichada marcada desde la primera infancia de aquella que es considerada la primera serial killer mujer de la historia.

Sin caer en un melodrama la historia logra seguir paso a paso la decadencia física y moral de una mujer para la cual la falta de escrúpulos y moral era la constante de la vida.

Los asesinatos cometidos eran "actos de justicia" y de esa manera eran interpretados aun en la parte más profunda de su subconsciente, hasta los últimos momentos de su vida antes de ser condenada a la pena capital.

Un mérito especial va también a la directora de la pelicula, la debutante Patty Jenkins, quien junto con Charlize Theron parecen desarrollar fotograma tras fotograma una prueba circense de acrobacia sin red. Sería suficiente el mínimo descuido para caer en la banalidad y sin embargo no lo hacen.

Si bien la pelicula nos deja el sabor amargo de la piedad también nos confronta con el sentido de justicia por nuestras propias manos, porque no son menos culpables los hombres acusados de violencia sexual. El paradigma de si es justo o penalizarlos de esa manera escapa a la intención de este post, pero en ciertos momentos la pelicula nos lleva a pensar en ello.

¿Si la acusada merece la pena capital por los que ha hecho, que pena merecerían esos hombres si estuvieran vivos?

Nada más y nada menos que 30 nominaciones, de las cuales 22 fueron primeros premios.
