The story is about Adam a screenwriter and lonely man that live in a building in the outskirts of London thinking that is the only one living in that building, but one night he received a visit apparently was a neighbor named Harry, he show up drunk and trying to have something with Adam but he just close the door at him. After that situation Adam and Harry started meeting each other in the elevator and Adam take the decision of give him an opportunity of know Harry’s better starting a relationship. One of those days that they were expending time together Harry saw a picture and Adam mention that they were his parents that they died when he was only 12, in that moment the scene changed drastically showing us an Adam in the public train going to the suburbs to visit his childhood home but he never though that in that place he will found his dead parents living with the same age prior the accident even though that sub real moment Adam was not afraid at the contrary he decided that will live that moment with his family, passing all the time that he could until the point that decided to present Harry to his family, the day that they went together to Adam home arrived but no one answer making Harrys believe that Adam was crazy until the moment that he also could see Adam’s parents but after that everything change forcing Adam take a big decision if continue living that sub real life or return to his real life. The movie We Are all Strange will force the audience think in what is living Adam in the desire of bringing to life a beloved one to our present live, the movie found a lot of success on theaters and now its finally coming to streaming on Hulu.

We Are All Strangers (2024) is a drama and fantasy film written and directed by Andrew Haigh.This story is a fantasy created in Adam’s mind and to deal with this situation, he establishes a relationship with a neighbor named Harry, living odd moments that will making him pass through so many feelings, accepting them, clinging to them, loving them and also suffering for all of those them. A story of loneliness and acceptance.
Haigh is a director that like to create intimate stories that dig into themes of love, loss and passage of time things that he shows and expand in We are All Strangers, his first movie was Greek Pete 2009 a movie that made him earned the Artistic Achievement Award at Outfest, continue with the romantic drama Weekend 2011, in 2015 release the movie 45 years movie that made him earned Rampling an Academy Award nomination. The director is also known for TV Series such as Looking where he worked as co-creator and co-producer, in this movie Haigh took inspiration from Taichi Yamada’s novel Stranger and in addition the filming was made in Haigh’s actual childhood home and is a way from the director to show his commitment with this project bringing authenticity to it.
Andrew Scoot plays Adam, he is an Irish actor best known for his work in theater and his role on the TV Series Sherlock Holmes and in movie such as Spectre 2015, he will be appearing in the announce Netflix series Ripley 2024. Paul Mescal is Harry, Adams neighbor, Mescal is also an Irish actor he is known for his Emmy Award nomination for the miniseries Normal People, Mescal made his debut with in the film The Lost Daughter 2021 and continue with his good performce in Gods Creatures and Aftersun 2022. Claire Foy plays Adam’s mother, Foy is a talented actresses who take the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the series The Crown role that earned her a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award. Jamie Bellis Adam’s father, Bellis earned a BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his role of Billy Elliot in 2000, confirming his talent.
The main message of We Are All Strangers is accept that the past can’t be changed that what has been experienced stay there and people should continue their life with all the good memories that our family, friends and journey can bring to our mind also accepting the pain, grief, love and loss that we can be passing through, including maybe that feeling of feeling in our own home with our own family with our self even though that feeling it doesn’t change the reality that in one place and the our love one will want us to continue fighting for a good life, to find someone to love and someone that love us in the same way and that what are we living in the present is what maters.
Critical Reception and Audience Response
The critics for this movie has been positives mentioning that was a good movie to be nominated on the Oscar but it was not the case, critics also mention the performance of Andrew Scott as Adam praising his acting for being so authentic and full of intensity, acclaiming the way he embody the character in the way that people could feel all his emotions. The story about life after death, the meaning of the family is something that the audience is deeply related to and is a reason that make this movie fascinating.
In conclusion the movie We Are All Strangers bring a topic of self discovering bringing the idea of the past into the present, the illusion that not everything is lost with the complexity of the family environment, that people should live the life in the present never forgetting the past to create a good future, plant the reality that all is connected and that nothing is forever. Adam the main character is living a life of loneliness trying to hold his beloved memories, many people is struggling with that same premise but in real life, people that don’t let go the past and also is not living the present, is not enjoying what is around them. We Are All Strangers is the movie that will make audience suffer for the lost of people that has gone that are always in our memories living with us in the present but also provide a twisted plot about what is real for Adam and also what can be real for us, what we want to believe and live every day. This movie is a ride of emotions is going to carry you to the deepest pain and then to the highest happiness, is a journey that must be take by the audience also to knows at the end how Adam is going to continue his own journey.
