El Equipo Avatar volverá en Live Action... por segunda vez - Opinión [ESP-ENG]

Los Live Action son el dolor de cabeza de las éxitosas animaciones de toda una generación...

Avatar: The Last Airbender, fue una de las mejores animaciones occidentales que disfruté en mi niñez. La comencé a ver cuando se estrenó su segunda temporada, concebida como el "libro tierra", y aunque conocía muy poco el orden de su argumento, pude engancharme fácilmente a la historia de Aang, el último maestro aire que, además, es el Avatar: el elegido cuya principal tarea es mantener la paz en el mundo dominando los cuatro elementos: agua, tierra, fuego y aire.

Tras varios maratones en Nickelodeon, pude agarrar el hilo de los acontecimientos que dieron origen a la aventura de Aang y sus amigos Sokka, Katara, Toph, Momo el mono volador y Appa el bisonte volador. El mundo que el avatar debe defender está en una guerra que ha durado 100 años, y que libera la nación del fuego contra las tribus de la nación del Agua y las fortificaciones de la nación Tierra. La nación del aire ha sido destruida por completo... pero el último del linaje, Aang, despertó de un siglo de haber estado atrapado en un iceberg.

Esta fue la mítica aventura que endulzó la infancia de muchos, y que, próximamente, volverá de la mano de Netflix tras un rotundo fracaso en el Live Action que guio Night Shyamalan en el 2010. ¿Se repetirá la historia? Eso está por descubrirse.

Live Action is the headache of successful animations for a whole generation...

Avatar: The Last Airbender, was one of the best western animations I enjoyed in my childhood. I started watching it when its second season was released, conceived as the "earth book", and although I knew very little about the order of its plot, I could easily get hooked on the story of Aang, the last airbender who is also the Avatar: the chosen one whose main task is to maintain peace in the world by dominating the four elements: water, earth, fire and air.

After several marathons on Nickelodeon, I was able to grasp the thread of events that gave rise to the adventure of Aang and his friends Sokka, Katara, Toph, Momo the flying monkey and Appa the flying bison. The world that the avatar must defend is in a war that has lasted 100 years, which liberates the Fire Nation against the tribes of the Water Nation and the fortifications of the Earth Nation. The Air nation has been completely destroyed... but the last of the lineage, Aang, awoke from a century of being trapped in an iceberg.

This was the mythical adventure that sweetened the childhood of many, and that, soon, will return in the hand of Netflix after a resounding failure in the Live Action that Night Shyamalan guided in 2010. Will history repeat itself? That remains to be discovered.

Netflix apuesta a la fidelidad... hasta cierto punto

Cuando se estrenó el Trailer Oficial de Avatar: The Last Airbender tuve emociones encontradas; una especie de nostalgia con respecto a los personajes, la banda sonora y algunos paisajes. Creo que los creadores de esta nueva apuesta de Netflix intenta apegarse a los recursos de la animación original en la medida de lo posible. Esto es bastante complejo, todavía más si se considera a los fans más fieles. Podría decir yo que, en definitiva, no me gusta que arruinen una gran historia con malos Live Actions, cosa que ya ha pasado y nos ha llenado a muchos de la terrible decepción.

Creo que el acierto con One Piece fue los guiños hilarantes al anime, y por supuesto, fue lo que terminó por darle el éxito que todos conocemos. Con Avatar: The Last Airbender parece que la historia se repetirá. Algunas cosas, sin embargo, ya han hecho ruido. Por ejemplo, personajes como Katara se han visto envueltos en la controversia por su color de piel, que es más claro que en la versión original. Más allá de eso, pienso que esto no definirá la serie. Lo que importa, en todo caso, es que pueda ser tan buena, entretenida y épica como aquella animación que se estrenó en el 2005.

Netflix bets on fidelity... to a certain extent.

When the Official Trailer of Avatar: The Last Airbender was released I had mixed emotions; a kind of nostalgia regarding the characters, the soundtrack and some landscapes. I think the creators of this new Netflix bet tries to stick to the resources of the original animation as much as possible. This is quite complex, even more if you consider the most loyal fans. I could say that, in short, I do not like that they ruin a great story with bad Live Actions, something that has already happened and has filled many of us with terrible disappointment.

I think the success with One Piece was the hilarious winks to the anime, and of course, that's what ended up giving it the success we all know. With Avatar: The Last Airbender it looks like history will repeat itself. Some things, however, have already made noise. For example, characters like Katara have been mired in controversy because of her skin color, which is lighter than in the original version. Beyond that, I think this will not define the series. What matters, in any case, is that it can be as good, entertaining and epic as that animation that premiered in 2005.

Quizás el error de Night Shyamalan fue subestimar la obra maestra que debía llevar al Live Action. En la serie animada, muy madura en términos de su premisa bélica y fantástica, los personajes se debaten en crudas batallas existencialistas bajo el fenómeno de la guerra, el amor, la familia y el pasado. Cada movimiento para el control de los elementos tiene un trasfondo: una historia. Lo que hizo Shymalan fue relatar, sin fidelidad alguna, lo que se convirtió en un fracaso.

Shyamalan tuvo un enfoque muy simplista para Avatar: The Last Airbender. La película tenía una átmosfera oscura, pálida, con personajes demasiado planos. No pude procesar tanta desigualdad entre la obra original y aquel largometraje, todavía más, cuando noté que faltó mucha de esa magia humorística, dramática y trascendental que mantuvo en pie a los protagonistas. Ruego para que Netflix le haga honor con esta nueva propuesta. Cruzo los dedos hasta su estreno.

The Last Airbender is not just any old series.

Perhaps Night Shyamalan's mistake was to underestimate the masterpiece he was to bring to Live Action. In the animated series, very mature in terms of its war and fantasy premise, the characters are engaged in crude existentialist battles under the phenomena of war, love, family and the past. Every move to control the elements has a background: a story. What Shymalan did was to relate, without any fidelity whatsoever, what became a failure.

Shyamalan had a very simplistic approach to Avatar: The Last Airbender. The film had a dark, pale atmosphere, with overly flat characters. I couldn't process so much inequality between the original work and that feature film, even more so, when I noticed that it lacked a lot of that humorous, dramatic, and transcendental magic that kept the main characters on their feet. I pray that Netflix will honor it with this new offering. Fingers crossed until its release.

The Last Airbender nos dio los mejores personajes de nuestra infancia

No puedo olvidar a mis personajes favoritos dentro de The Last Airbender. Aunque parezca extraño, uno de estos fue Azula, la villana más desquiciada que he visto en una animación occidental. Azula era una chica prodigio del fuego control, tan talentoso y maniática, que su padre, el señor del fuego Ozai, la prefirió a ella como heredera al trono en lugar de Zuko, su hijo varón. Por supuesto, hay un entramado más oscuro en el linaje de la familia real de la nación del fuego. Y hablando de Zuko... no por nada es considerado uno de los mejores héroes redimidos dentro de una serie animada.

Aang, el protagonista principal, es más carismático y pacífico, además de ser un auténtico tonto. Zokka y Katara son hermanos bastante peculiares, ambos marcados por la invasión a su tribu y la perdida de su madre a manos de la guerra. El Tío Iroh es otro de mis grandes favoritos; al igual que otros personajes, este sufrió una gran pérdida. El dolor, entonces, es el centro de unificación entre nuestros héroes.

No conozco a ninguno de los actores que interpretarán a estos personajes (salvo a Daniel Dae Kim) en el Live Action de Netflix. Cruzo los dedos otra vez... ¡Cuántos nervios!

The Last Airbender gave us the best characters of our childhood.

I can't forget my favorite characters within The Last Airbender. Oddly enough, one of these was Azula, the most unhinged villain I've ever seen in a western animation. Azula was a firebending prodigy girl, so talented and maniacal that her father, the fire lord Ozai, preferred her as heir to the throne over Zuko, his male child. Of course, there is a darker undercurrent in the lineage of the Fire Nation's royal family. And speaking of Zuko... not for nothing is he considered one of the best redeemed heroes in an animated series.

Aang, the main protagonist, is more charismatic and peaceful, besides being a real goofball. Zokka and Katara are rather peculiar siblings, both scarred by the invasion of their tribe and the loss of their mother to war. Uncle Iroh is another big favorite of mine; like other characters, he suffered a great loss. Grief, then, is the unifying focus among our heroes.

I don't know any of the actors who will play these characters (except Daniel Dae Kim) in the Netflix Live Action. Fingers crossed again.... So many nerves!

Nos toca esperar y evaluar

A pesar de todas las teorías o especulaciones sobre "Avatar: The Last Airbender", la única manera de saber si la serie tendrá éxito o no es esperar su estreno. Como dije, los Live Action, en ocasiones, suelen arruinar a las obras originales, quitándonos esa magia que alguna vez eclipsó nuestros ojos y la maravilló con historias animadas únicas. Para mí, nada será mejor que la aventura original de Aang y sus amigos, de todas formas, tras ver el Trailer y algunas imágenes promocionales, debo admitir que la propuesta de Netflix parece ser diferente a lo que alguna vez intentó hacer Shymalan. Y yo espero que sea así en realidad.

We have to wait and evaluate

Despite all the theories or speculations about "Avatar: The Last Airbender", the only way to know if the series will be successful or not is to wait for its release. As I said, Live Action, at times, tends to ruin the original works, taking away that magic that once eclipsed our eyes and marveled it with unique animated stories. For me, nothing will be better than the original adventure of Aang and his friends, anyway, after seeing the Trailer and some promotional images, I must admit that Netflix's proposal seems to be different from what Shymalan once tried to do. And I hope it's really like that.
