Finally, Wicked | Review

Hello to all my movie-loving friends! Today, as it's a nice Sunday, I wanted to watch a quiet movie that suited the day. Looking through my streaming catalog, I saw this title and remembered that I hadn't seen it yet because I was waiting for my sister so we could watch it together, and that's what we did. We agreed and started watching Wicked, the movie.

Buscando en mi catálogo de Streaming vi este título y recordé que aún no la había visto porque estaba esperando por mi hermana para poder verlas juntas, y así lo hicimos. Nos pusimos de acuerdo y empezamos para ver Wicked, la película.

Wicked is one of Broadway's most famous and successful musicals and was brought to the big screen in 2024. It is based on the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written in 1995 by Gregory Maguire. It is the prequel that tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, known from The Wizard of Oz. This book was adapted into a musical in 2003, starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who are giants known for their voices and acting abilities.

When the adaptation was made for the big screen, the auditions for the cast were fierce, because the opportunity to play such distinguished characters, who also had high-profile predecessors, set the bar very high. But they did a wonderful job and chose Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Both have had quite successful musical and acting careers, although Ariana, in particular, had not acted for many years, but she returned to show how talented she is.

Wicked es uno de los musicales más famosos y exitosos de Broadway y fue llevado en 2024 a la gran pantalla. Está basado en el libro Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, escrito en 1995 por Gregory Maguire. Es la precuela que cuenta la historia de la Bruja Mala del Oeste, conocida por El Mago de Oz. Este libro fue adaptado a un musical en 2003, teniendo como protagonistas a Idina Mendel y Kristin Chenoweth, quienes son unas gigantes conocidas por sus voces y capacidades actorales.

Cuando se hizo la adaptación a la gran pantalla, las audiciones para el casting fueron feroces, porque la oportunidad de representar a tan insignes personajes, que además tenían unas predecesoras de altura, dejaban la vara muy alta. Pero hicieron un trabajo maravilloso y escogieron a Cynthia Erivo como Elphaba y a Ariana Grande como Glinda. Ambas, con una carrera musical y actoral bastante exitosa, aunque Ariana, en particular, tenía muchos años sin actuar, volvió para demostrar lo talentosa que es.

The story focuses on explaining the reasons why someone becomes so evil. The background story, the family that surrounds them, or how others treat them for whatever reason, such as the green skin color Elphaba was born with. It also shows that just because you look beautiful or appear to be a pink fairy, it doesn't mean you are naturally good like Glinda, who is often mean and ruthless. There is a duality in both stories that intertwine, where neither ends up being completely evil, nor the other completely good. It is just a fight against injustices that can lead you to act in the way you think is best. It all depends on the lens through which you see it and which side of the story you are on.

As for the production, I understand that a studio and very little CGI were used to make this film, which I love, because it feels and looks like an old movie, evoking the golden years of cinema; the era when films like The Wizard of Oz were successful.

La historia se centra en explicar cuáles son las razones para que alguien se haga tan malvado. La historia detrás, la familia que los rodea o como los tratan los demás por cualquier razón, como por ejemplo, el color de piel verde con el que Elphaba había nacido. También muestra que no por verte bella o mostrarte como un hada rosada, eres naturalmente buena como Glinda, quien suele ser mala y despiadada. Hay una dualidad en ambas historias que se van entrelazando, donde ni una termina siendo completamente mala, ni la otra completamente buena. Solo es una lucha contra las injusticias que pueden conducirte a actuar de la manera que creas que es la mejor. Todo depende de la lupa con la que la veas y de que lado de la historia te encuentres.

En cuanto a la producción, tengo entendido que se usó un estudio y muy poco CGI para hacer esta película, lo cual me encanta, porque se siente y se ve como una película antigua, como para evocar los años dorados del cine; la época en la que películas como El Mägo de Oz eran exitosas.

And this, of course, is a musical, and here we hear music. If you don't like musicals, then you'd better not watch it. I love musicals, I love seeing the talent of the artists who sing, dance, and act at the same time and show us how talented and hard-working they are. Behind that talent is hard work, and I love to admire them.

It was a perfect movie to spend Sunday watching, and although this movie had multiple Oscar nominations, it only won two. One for Best Costume Design and another for Best Production Design, both artistic and well deserved. As for our leading ladies, they only received nominations because they had stiff competition.

Although, given all the publicity surrounding the film's release, you probably already know about it, I'll still share the trailer in case you feel like watching it. In my case, I think I'll watch it a second time, but this time in Spanish because I want to hear Danna Paola's performance as Elphaba. Hugs to all, and see you next time. Bye.

Y esto, por supuesto, es un musical, y aquí escuchamos música. Si no te gustan los musicales, entonces mejor no la veas. Yo adoro los musicales, me encanta comprobar el talento de los artistas que canta, bailando y actúan al mismo tiempo y que nos demuestran los talentosos y trabajadores que son. Detrás de ese talento hay trabajo duro y me encanta admirarlos.

Fue una película perfecta para pasar el domingo, y aunque esta película tuvo múltiples nominaciones al Óscar, se llevó solo dos. Uno por mejor vestuario y otro por mejor diseño de producción, ambos artísticos y muy merecidos. En cuanto a nuestras protagonistas, se quedaron solo en nominaciones porque tuvieron alta competencia.

Aunque lo más probable, dada toda la publicidad que hubo alrededor del estreno de la película, ya sepan de ella, aun así, les comparto el tráiler por si les provoca verla. En mi caso, creo que la veré una segunda vez, pero esta vez en español porque quiero escuchar la interpretación de Danna Paola como Elphaba. Un abrazo a todos y hasta otra oportunidad. Bye.
