Hamilton at the Cinema

Greetings, once again, my dear friends in this wonderful community. I think by now it's no secret that I love musicals, and that whenever I can, I watch and rewatch the musicals I love over and over again. This post is very special because it's a Broadway musical broadcast in theaters. It's Lin-Manuel Miranda's production of Hamilton: Hamilton.

Creo que a estas alturas, para nadie es un secreto que amo los musicales, y que cad vez que puedo, veo y reveo una y otra vez los musicales que me encantan. Esta publicación es muy particular porque es un musical de Broadway transmitido en el cine. Se trata de la producción Hamilton de Lin-Manuel Miranda: Hamilton.

A week ago, Hamilton celebrated its 10th anniversary worldwide. As I mentioned, this Broadway production achieved something of a milestone: the musical was recorded on stage and brought to the big screen so that fans around the globe could see it on the big screen.

Twenty years ago, something like this would have been unthinkable, because musical theater purists were reluctant to share all this with the cinema, but the truth is that globalization and the popularity of musicals have made all this possible. I always watched these productions on TV on channels like Film & Arts, and I spent hours enjoying them, but when Hamilton premiered on Disney Streaming, we knew something big was happening.

By pure chance, I found out that it was going to be shown at the movie theater near my house. So, without hesitation, I bought a ticket to go see the story of what Americans call one of the Founding Fathers. He was one of the precursors of their independence, with a rather unique story.

But what makes this production so appealing and revolutionary is that when it premiered, it took Broadway by storm by including rhythms such as rap, hip-hop, and rhythm and blues, among others. This made the production a real achievement and gave it a strong position in pop culture.

The show would only be in theaters for a week, so I couldn't waste this great moment. But the truth is that I was terrified of two things, one of which was that no one would show up, and I would be alone in the whole theater. The other thing is more laughable, since people's reactions to others singing in the theater went viral, and I was afraid of what they might do in my theater.

Hace una semana se celebró a nivel mundial los 10 años de Hamilton, que como ya he dicho, es una producción de Broadway que hizo algo que es un hito: la grabación del musical en las tablas llevado al cine para que los fanáticos del globo terráqueo pudiéramos verlo en la pantalla grande.

Hace 20 años, habría sido impensable que algo así sucediera, porque los puristas del teatro musical estaban renuentes a compartir todo esto con el cine, pero la verdad es que la globalización y la popularidad de los musicales han logrado todo esto. Yo siempre veía estas producciones en la tele en canales como Film & Arts, y pasaba horas disfrutando esto, pero cuando Hamilton se estrenó en Streaming a través de las pantallas de Disney, sabíamos que algo grande estaba sucediendo.

Por pura casualidad me enteré de que lo iban a transmitir en la sala de cine cerca de mi casa, así que sin dudarlo, compré una entrada para ir a ver la historia de lo que los estadounidenses llaman como uno de los Padres de la Patria, quien fue uno de los precursores de su independencia con una historia bastante particular.

Pero lo que hace a esta producción tan atractiva y revolucionaria, es que cuando fue estrenada, golpeó a Broadway al incluir ritmos como el Rap, Hip-Hop y el rhythm and blues, entre otras. Lo que hizo de esta producción un verdadero logro y se posicionó muy fuerte en la cultura pop.

Las funciones solo estarían una semana en las salas de cine, así que no podía desperdiciar este gran momento. Pero la verdad es que estaba aterrada por dos cosas, una de esas era que no fuera nadie y estuviera solita en toda la sala. La otra cosa es más risible, puesto que se viralizaron las reacciones de gente molesta porque cantaban en el cine, y me daba miedo de lo que pudieran hacer en mi sala.

The time had come, the madness began, the room was half full, and what surprised me most was that out of about 60 people, there were only two men. I felt so good in a room full of women who just wanted to sing their hearts out to the songs from this wonderful play. My real fear was that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it, but fortunately, most of them sang so well that it didn't bother me at all.

Llegó la hora, empezó la locura, la sala estaba llena a medias, y lo que más me sorprendió fue que de unas 60 personas, había solo dos hombres. Me sentí tan bien en una sala llena de mujeres que solo querían cantar a todo pulmón las piezas de esta obra teatral tan maravillosa. Mi real miedo es que no pudiera disfrutar, pero por fortuna, la mayoría cantaba tan bien que no me molestó en lo absoluto.

This is a spectacular show in every way. There were lots of girls dressed up in costumes from the show, which I only noticed during the intermission when we were given a 10-minute break. I also realized that the cast from Hamilton in Valencia was there, which is why they sang so well.

I know there are mixed opinions about what to expect at the movies, but in this particular case, where Lin-Manuel himself said he expected everyone to sing and dance in the movie theaters, we couldn't expect anything else. That's the experience; it's like going to Sea World and getting upset because you got wet. It's part of the experience. If you don't like it, then you'd better abstain. I had to prepare myself mentally, because I might have been annoyed if I hadn't known they were singing in the theaters. It was a good return to the theaters for me. I hadn't been to the movies in a couple of years, and I really enjoyed it. I'll let you in on a secret: you don't have to buy candy to enjoy the movies. If you're a movie lover, you'll enjoy it.

Esto es un espectáculo de todas las maneras, había muchas chicas caracterizadas con vestuarios del show, me di cuenta hasta el intermedio en donde nos dieron 10 minutos para un break. También me di cuenta de que estaba el elenco de Hamilton de Valencia, y que por eso cantaban tan bien.

Sé que hay opiniones encontradas con respecto a lo que pueden esperar en el cine, pero en este caso en particular, donde el mismo Lin-Manuel dijo que esperaba a todo el mundo cantando y bailando en las salas de cine, no podíamos esperar otra cosa. La experiencia es esa, es como ir a Sea World y molestarse porque salieron mojados, es parte de la experiencia. Si no les gusta, entonces mejor abstenerse. Yo me tuve que mentalizar, porque tal vez habría estado molesta si no me hubiera enterado de que cantaban en las salas. Fue un buen regreso de mi parte a las salas, tenía un par de años sin ir al cine, y lo disfruté mucho. Les doy un secreto: no es necesario que compren golosinas para disfrutar del cine, si son amantes, lo van a disfrutar.
