This review waited a long time to be done. Well, to be able to write it. And the main reason is that I waited a few years to do it. I find it unbelievable that it's from 2019. I know that in Latin America it was going to be released in 2020, but the pandemic happened, and I had to wait. Furthermore, I couldn't get it anywhere, and when I could get it I didn't have internet. Then I had, and forgot about it, and later I had some Streaming service (Prime, or Netflix, I don't remember which one) and there it was, I put it on The List, and more I never got interested. It was there, but since it was certain that when I watched it, I was going to be interested, I put more effort into watching anything else unknown.

Esta reseña esperó mucho para poder hacerse. Bueno, para poder escribirla. Y la principal razón es que esperé unos cuantos años para hacerlo. Me parece increíble que sea de 2019. Sé que en Latinoamérica se iba a estrenar en 2020, pero pasó la pandemia y tuve que esperar. No la conseguía en ningún lado, y cuando pude hacerlo no tenía internet. Luego tuve, y la olvidé, y posteriormente tuve algún servicio de Streaming (Prime, o Netflix, no recuerdo cuál) y allí estaba, La puse en La Lista, y más nunca me interesé. Estaba allí, pero como era seguro que cuando la viera, me iba a interesar, le puse más empeño a ver cualquier otra cosa desconocida.

What happened to me with Greta Gerwig's Little Women, is that I have seen many of the versions that exist, and perhaps makes it one of my favorite stories. I knew what I was going to see, I knew the ending of the story, I know each of the characters, this made it less appealing than any new production. By this I'm not saying it's not good, I just don't see the appeal of remakes. However, I think Little Women is that classic work that should be remade over and over again.

Let's cut to the chase, if you haven't seen any of the versions of Little Women, you should. I saw as many as TWO versions in two anime from the 80s, and it wasn't until I saw this one that I remembered this. Not that I've seen them, obviously I knew this, but I didn't remember there were two. This is an original story by Louisa May Alcott, who wrote the book in 1968. As I said, this book has been adapted many times throughout the history of cinema. In this opportunity she presents us the story, the director known for making movies in which women are more relevant (she is the director of Barbie), so there was no other current person who could take charge of this movie. She directed it and adapted the script. The challenge for her was to make this movie different from all the versions, so she decided to make a non-linear story where she used the Flashback resource to go back and forth in time. In this way, it could seem like Jo is writing her own story. The film had many nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, but only won Best Costumes. And the costumes were too contextualized to the period, nothing extravagant or pompous.

Lo que me pasó con Mujercitas de Gretta Gerwig, es que he visto muchas de las versiones que existen y tal vez la hace una de mis historias favoritas. Sabía lo que iba a ver, sabía el final de la historia, conozco cada uno de los personajes, esto lo hacía menos atrayente que cualquier producción nueva. Con esto no estoy diciendo que no sea buena, solo que no veo atractivo los remakes. Sin embargo, creo que Mujercitas es esa obra clásica que se debe volver a realizar una y otra vez.

Vamos al grano, si no han visto ninguna de las versiones de Mujercitas, deberían hacerlo, yo vi hasta DOS versiones en dos animes de los años 80, y no fue hasta que vi esta que recordé esto. No que las haya visto, obviamente sabía esto, pero no recordaba que eran dos. Esta es una historia original de Louisa May Alcott, quien escribió el libro en 1968. Como ya lo he dicho, este libro ha sido adaptado muchas veces a lo largo de la historia del cine. En esta oportunidad nos presenta la historia, la directora conocida por hacer películas en las que las mujeres son más relevantes (es la directora de Barbie), así que no había otra persona actual que pudiera hacerse cargo de esta película. La dirigió y adaptó el guion. El desafío para ella fue hacer que esta película se diferenciara de todas las versiones, así que decidió hacer una historia no lineal en donde usara el recurso del Flashback para ir adelante y atrás del tiempo. De esta manera, podría parecer que Jo está escribiendo su propia historia. La película tuvo muchas nominaciones, incluyendo mejor película y mejor guion adaptado, pero solo ganó el de mejor vestuario. Y el vestuario estuvo demasiado contextualizado a la época, nada extravagante o pomposo.

The plot tells the story of four sisters: Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth, who along with their mother, Marmee, must make a living while their father fights in the south in the war of succession, to give you an idea, the March family supported abolitionism, that is, they were against slavery. These four little women were looking for ways to get ahead because they did not have their father's support. They were studied girls and artists, it is a simple plot that shows us the love between sisters, mischief, sorority, and the value that each one has as a woman.

The wonder of this movie goes beyond the performances of each one. But as they did in all the predecessor movies, they put a lot of actresses with a prominent and rising career along with several heavy actors in the industry. I don't know where to start, but let's start with the March's.

La trama cuenta la historia de cuatro hermanas: Jo, Meg, Amy y Beth, quienes junto a su madre, Marmee, deben buscarse la vida mientras su padre lucha en el sur en la guerra de sucesión, para que tengan una idea, la familia March apoyaban el abolicionismo, es decir, que estaban en contra de la esclavitud. Estas cuatro Mujercitas buscan las maneras de salir adelante por no tener el apoyo de su padre. Eran unas chicas estudiadas y artistas, es una trama sencilla que nos muestra el amor entre hermanas, travesuras, sororidad y el valor que tiene cada una como mujer.

La maravilla de esta película va más allá de las interpretaciones de cada una, si no que así como hicieron en todas las películas predecesoras, pusieron a un montón de actrices con una carrera prominente y en ascenso junto a varios actores pesados en la industria. No sé por donde empezar, pero empezaremos por las March.

Jo March: She is played by Greta's muse: Saoirse Roman, who already participated with her in Lady Bird. If you look at the casting, it's obvious that no one else in this world, and this time it could be Jo, was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. Jo is a writer who makes a living for herself, she is a governess and also publishes anonymous short stories in a publishing house. She is an independent woman who does not believe she has to rely on a man to stand out in the world.

Jo March: Está interpretada por la musa de Greta: Saoirse Roman, quien ya participó con ella en Lady Bird. Si vez el casting, es obvio que más nadie en este mundo y en esta oportunidad podría ser Jo, estuvo nominada al Óscar por su actuación. Jo es una escritora que se busca la vida por sí misma, es institutriz y además publica cuentos anónimos en una editorial. Es una mujer independiente que no cree que deba valerse de un hombre para sobresalir en el mundo.

Meg March: The actress who plays Meg is already a benchmark in our industry because we have seen her grow up. Emma Watson plays the flirtatious Meg, an aspiring actress who loves dancing and parties. She is a hopeless romantic and is always with Jo.

Meg March: La actriz que interpreta a Meg ya es un referente en nuestra industria porque la hemos visto crecer. Emma Watson interpreta a la coqueta Meg, una aspirante a actriz que ama bailar y las fiestas. Es una romántica empedernida y siempre anda con Jo. Emma Watson no hizo mas apariciones despu[es de esta pelicula.

Amy March: We have to be very clear that the actress I am going to name has already stayed in our lives and for me, she is one of the rising stars that is going to become one of the best. Many of us know Florence Pugh from Midsommar, others because she is the new Black Widow, and in a few days we will see her in Oppenheimer. She plays Amy, the painter, who strikes me as a first-rate spoiled brat, and she had the tenacious difficulty of playing a child as old as she is. Looking childish without becoming ridiculous was quite difficult, and I thought she did it masterfully, even stealing the show in the film. Keep an eye on Florence. She got an Oscar nomination for this performance.

Amy March: Hay que estar muy claros que la actriz que les voy a nombrar ya se quedó en nuestra vida y para mí es una de las estrellas en ascenso que va a convertirse en una de las mejores. Muchos conocemos a Florence Pugh de Midsommar, otros porque es la nueva Viuda Negra y en unos días la veremos en Oppenheimer. Interpreta a Amy, la pintora, quien me parece una malcriada de primera, y tuvo la tenaz dificultad de interpretar a una niña con la edad que tiene. Verse infantil sin tornarse ridículo fue bastante difícil, y a mí me pareció que lo hizo magistral, incluso que se robó el show en la película. No le pierdan el ojo a Florence. Obtuvo una nominación al Óscar por esta actuación.

Beth March: The pianist is played by an actress I don't know, but seeing her biography, she has already started her career with some good productions. In this movie she played the shy Beth, the most sensitive of the whole gang and the one who steals everyone's heart. I won't tell you more because I don't want to make spoilers.

En esta película hizo de la tímida Beth, la más sensible de toda la pandilla y la que nos roba el corazón a todos. No cuento más por qué no les quiero hacer spoilers.

I could go on introducing each of the characters, but the list would get much longer because each of the actors in the film has a track record that speaks for itself, so I'll just introduce them to you so you'll be dying to see it. We'll see Timotheé Chamalet as Laurie. Laura Dern is Marmee March. Bob Odenkirk as Father March. Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Pure screen heavyweights, but they are not the focus of this movie.

Feminism, a word that many are afraid of. But watching this film, you will understand what it is about, and why even after so many years we are still fighting for this. It is about breaking with something that is already systematized, and that will not change overnight, but without the struggles of people like Louisa May Alcott, who was a suffragette in 1860, the feminist movement would not have started. This film is not against men, and true fenminists know that feminism is not against machismo, it is simply a fight for equality and to be free. Free to decide to do with our lives what we want, and not to do things because there is nothing else to do.

One of the reasons why I like Greta so much is because she can show women in any facet (even being a tall and flirtatious blonde like Barbie), without belittling them. In this movie she shows how, even at the time, they did what they wanted. Whether it was working, marrying for love, staying single because you want to and because you have a lot of money to do so or marrying a millionaire. But any of these cases could have been because they made the decision and not because they had to do it to be somebody.

There are definitely a lot of things I owe to Little Women, and not to this movie alone, but to all the versions of them, because they stayed very intrinsic in the bottom of my soul. And sometimes I feel a bit like Jo, who wants to do things without anyone's help.

Feminismo, una palabra a los que muchos le tienen miedo. Pero al ver esta película entenderán de que va, y porque aun después de tantos años se sigue peleando por esto. Es por romper con algo que ya está sistematizado, y que no cambiará de la noche a la mañana, pero sin las luchas de personas como Louisa May Alcott, quien fue sufragista en 1860, el movimiento feminista no habría empezado. Esta película no es en contra de los hombres, y las verdaderas fenministas saben que el feminismo no está contra del machismo, es simplemente una lucha por la igualdad y por ser libres. Libres de decidir hacer con nuestra vida, lo que queramos y no hacer las cosas porque no hay otra cosa por hacer.

Una de las razones por las cuales me gusta tanto Greta es porque puede mostrar a las mujeres en cualquier faceta (incluso siendo una rubia alta y coqueta como Barbie), sin menospreciarlas. En esta película muestra como aun en la época, ellas hicieron lo que querían ya fuera trabajar, casarse por amor, quedarte soltera porque quieres y porque tienes mucho dinero para hacerlo o casarte con un millonario. Pero cualquiera de estos casos pudo ser porque tomaron la decisión y no porque tenían que hacerlo para ser alguien.

Definitivamente, hay muchas cosas que le debo a Mujercitas, y no a esta película únicamente, sino a todas las versiones de ellas, porque se me quedaron muy intrínsecas en el fondo de mi alma. Y a veces me siento un poco como Jo, quien quiere hacer las cosas sin ayuda de nadie.
