One Battle After Another | Movie Review

Greetings to the members of this community. With the awards season fast approaching, I feel compelled to talk about one of the nominees, and my favorite of all those nominated. But nothing I say here has anything to do with the nominations, but rather with my perception of the film before it was nominated for anything.

Pero nada de lo que diga acá tiene que ver con las nominaciones, sino con mi percepción de la película antes de que fuera nominada a algo.

Every time Leonardo DiCaprio appears in the credits of a film, only one thing is certain: I'm going to see it. And while I was chasing the film around theaters (all very late screenings) and streaming services, waiting for the premiere of One Battle After Another, by director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Pat and Perfidia Beverly Hills are a couple who share a common bond: they are militants and leaders of a far-left revolutionary front called French 75. In addition to multiple acts of terrorism, vandalism, theft, kidnapping, and more, they also fight for the rights of people such as immigrants. During that time, they make important enemies, such as Steven J. Lockjaw, a far-left military man who was sexually humiliated by Perfidia. After a long battle and many other events, he was arrested, revealing the whereabouts of all the members of French 75, including his partner and their little baby, who changed their names and disappeared from the public eye.

Believe it or not, I haven't given away any spoilers, since all of this happens in the first few minutes of the film. Everything else takes place 14 years later, when Steven J. Lockjaw continues his search for the two fugitives and Pat and little Charlene (now called Bob and Willa), who is a completely overprotective father, receive the most dreaded call: they are coming for them.

Cada vez que aparece Leonardo DiCaprio en los créditos de alguna película, solo existe la seguridad de una cosa: la voy a ver. Y mientras perseguía la película por cines (todas las funciones muy tarde) y los servicios de streaming, esperando el estreno de Una Batalla Tras Otra, del director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Pat y Perfidia Beverly Hills son una pareja que tiene en común que son militantes y líderes de un frente revolucionario de extrema izquierda llamado French 75. Además de los múltiples actos de terrorismo, vandalismo, robos, secuestros y demás, también luchan por los derechos de personas como, por ejemplo, los inmigrantes. Durante esa época se hacen de enemigos importantes, como por ejemplo a Steven J. Lockjaw, un militar de extrema izquierda, quien fuera humillado sexualmente por Perfidia y desencadena que luego de una larga batalla y muchas cosas más, fuera apresada, revelando el paradero de todos los integrantes de French 75, incluyendo a su pareja y a su pequeña bebé, quienes cambian de nombre y desaparecen del ojo público.

Aunque no lo crean, no he hecho ningún spoiler, puesto que todo esto ocurre en los primeros minutos de la película. Todo lo demás ocurre 14 años después, cuando Steven J. Lockjaw continúa con la búsqueda de los dos fugitivos y Pat y la pequeña Charlene (ahora llamados Bob y Willa), quien es un padre completamente sobreprotector, recibe la llamada más temida: van por ellos.

Before you start complaining about the film's subject, I recommend everyone watch it. It touches on current issues, but the most incredible thing is that, even though the film was released in 2025, production began in 2023, which really impressed me. The plot touches on the decline of extremist ideals (on both sides), in which those on the left can be corrupt and break down because they want to save their skin before sacrificing themselves for others. Those on the right can also fall under the spell of the left. There is a phrase that I have always taken to heart and that could summarize this plot: extremes meet.

Antes de que vayan a quejarse de la temática de la película, recomiendo a todos que la vean. Toca temas actuales, pero lo más increíble es que, aun cuando la película fue estrenada en 2025, su producción empezó en 2023, y esto fue un dato que me impresionó mucho. La trama toca la decadencia de los ideales de los extremistas (de un lado y de otro), en que tanto los de izquierda pueden estar podridos y quebrarse por querer salvarse su propio pellejo antes de inmolarse por el resto, y que los de derecha también pueden caer en los encantos de la izquierda. Hay una frase que siempre he llevado de cerca y que podría sintetizar esta trama: los extremos se tocan.

Now let's get down to business, and I already said it: it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and does not disappoint. A father devoted to fatherhood and marijuana who gave us some memorable scenes that I enjoyed immensely, while running, with a look that closely resembled Servando Primera (a style I couldn't ignore). He was searching for help with his daughter's sensei, Sergio St. Carlos, played by Benicio del Toro. The latter is the calm in the midst of the madness, the balance within each battle taking place in parallel.

If any character has managed to earn my hatred after his performance, and who, in my opinion, should win the Oscar, it is Sean Penn as Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw. Morally questionable, ruthless, and with a secret that could cost him his entry into a white men's club. His performance is one of the most remarkable things in the entire film.

To finish talking about the performances, we cannot exclude Teyana Taylor as Perfidia, whose brief appearance was enough to steal the show and earn her an Oscar nomination.

Ahora vamos a lo pesado, y ya lo dije: está protagonizada por Leonardo DiCaprio y no decepciona. Un padre entregado a la paternidad y a la marihuana que nos dio unas escenas memorables que disfruté un montón, mientras corría, con un look en el que se parecía muchísimo a Servando Primera (estilo que no podía obviar), en busca de ayuda con el Sensei de su hija, Sergio St. Carlos, personificado por Benicio del Toro. Este último es la calma en medio de la locura, es el equilibrio dentro de cada batalla ocurriendo en paralelo.

Si algún personaje ha logrado ganarse todo mi odio tras toda su actuación, y que, desde mi punto de vista, debería llevarse el Oscar, es Sean Penn como el Coronel Steven J. Lockjaw. Moralmente cuestionable, despiadado y con un secreto que podría costarle su entrada a un club de hombres blancos. Su actuación es de las cosas más remarcables de toda la película.

Para terminar de hablar de las actuaciones, no podemos dejar de lado a Teyana Taylor como Perfidia, quien con su corta aparición fue suficiente para robarse toda la atención y una nominación al Oscar.

Paul Thomas Anderson is not an unknown director to me. I have even reviewed some of his films here before, such as Licorice Pizza and Phantom Thread, for example. This film is completely different from his previous ones; it does not fit into a single genre, but if there is one thing all these films have in common, it is their ability to tell stories that captivate us, with well-constructed and well-represented characters. This production, adapted from Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland, is a true visual gem, with scenes that will keep you glued to the screen.

Anyone would think that, being nominated for an Oscar, it would be a clear and slow-paced drama, but this is far from the case. It is action-packed from start to finish. It is a thoroughly entertaining film that you can enjoy and get a clear picture of the current political climate in the US.

Paul Thomas Anderson no es un director desconocido para mí. Incluso había hecho alguna reseña por aquí anteriormente, como Licorice Pizza y Phantom Thread, por ejemplo. Esta es una película completamente opuesta a las anteriores; no está encasillada en un género único, pero si algo tienen en común todas estas películas es la capacidad de contar historias que nos atrapen, con personajes bien construidos y representados. Esta producción adaptada de la novela Vineland de Thomas Pynchon es una verdadera joya visual, con escenas que te mantendrán pegada a la pantalla.

Cualquiera pensaría que, al ser nominada al Oscar, será un drama claro y lento, pero esto está muy lejos de lo que ocurre. Es acción de principio a fin. Es una película completamente entretenida, que puedes disfrutar y obtener una clara visión del clima actual de las políticas en EEUU.
