Pam & Tommy: El inicio de una era | Review

I think most people of my generation know who Pamela Anderson is. When I was 12 years old, my classmates in the small backwater town where I grew up had Baywatch notebooks featuring the actress in her little red bikini. Then, years later, I got into the world of show business thanks to a TV channel called E! I loved to watch the documentaries of the actors and the news at noon.

For a good while, there was no news other than Pamela's marriage (the multiple marriages), that she got Tommy's name tattooed as if it was her wedding ring and of course, the scandal over the honeymoon sex tape with Tommy. Knowing all this news, I couldn't pass up watching the miniseries that was released a few months ago and which I'm here to review today: Pam & Tommy.

A los 12 años, mis compañeros de clases en aquel pueblito recóndito en dónde me crié, tenían los cuadernos de Baywatch en donde aparecía la actriz con su pequeño bikini rojo. Luego, años después, me adentré en el mundo de la farándula gracias a un canal de televisión llamado E!. Me encantaba ver los documentales de los actores y las noticias a mediodía.

Durante una buena temporada, no había otra noticia que el matrimonio de Pamela (los múltiples matrimonios), que se tatuó el nombre de Tommy como si fuera su anillo de matrimonio y por su puesto, el escándalo por el vídeo sexual de la luna de miel con Tommy. Sabiendo todas estas noticias, no podía dejar pasar ver la miniserie que sacaron hace unos meses y de la cual vengo a hacer la reseña del día de hoy: Pam & Tommy.

With the introduction, I have already given a bit of a preamble of what the 8-chapter miniseries is about. It focuses on the time when the sexy Playboy Bunny and actress of the famous series, Baywatch, meets and marries Tommy Lee, drummer of the Glam Rock band, Mötley Crue, only 96 hours after they met. Their entire marriage was shrouded by scandal from the very moment they were married, and then by the spread of the sex tape in which they were filmed during their honeymoon.

This production has many aspects that I can't wait to talk about. Let's start with the obvious: the actors.

Esta se centra en la época en la que la Sexy conejita de Playboy y actriz de la afamada serie, Baywatch, conoce y se casa con Tommy Lee, baterista de la banda de Glam Rock, Mötley Crue, solo después de 96 h de haberse conocido. Todo su matrimonio se vio envuelto por el escándalo desde el mismo momento en que se casaron y luego por la propagación del vídeo sexual en el que se grabaron durante su luna de miel.

Esta producción tiene muchos aspectos de los cuales me muero por conversar. Empezaremos por lo obvio: Los actores.

Pamela Anderson Lee was played by Lily James, whom we had seen playing more discreet but renowned roles. She is Cinderella in Disney's Live Action. She was Churchill's secretary in Darkest Hour. And she was a very distinguished teenager in Downtown Abbey. This time she took the risk of playing a sex bomb, one with big breasts, lots of skin and involved in the big scandal of the 90s. Her risk was one of the best we've seen in years, because it's not easy to be Cinderella and suddenly be showing breasts in a movie. Not only that, but she plays someone who is still alive. I almost thought at moments I was watching Pam, it was a memorable performance and another great career highlight.

Fue la secretaria de Churchill en Darkest Hour. Y fue una adolescente muy distinguida en Downtown Abbey. En esta oportunidad se arriesgó a interpretar a una bomba sexual, una con grandes senos, que mucha piel y que se ve involucrada en el gran escándalo de los 90. Su riesgo fue uno de los mejores que se hayan visto en años, porque no es fácil ser Cenicienta y de repente estar mostrando los senos en una película. Y no solo eso, sino que interpreta a alguien que aún está viva. Casi pensé en momentos que veía a Pam, fue una actuación memorable y otro gran acierto en su carrera.

Tommy Lee is played by Sebastian Stan, who transformed himself into the rocker. We know Sebastian from his work as Bucky in Captain America and many other roles. But I think his impersonation of the extroverted and eccentric Tommy will be a career-defining character. There's a point when impersonating real life people that you have to avoid crossing and that's the paradox, trying not to turn someone like Tommy into a parody is extremely difficult, and Sebastian did it. What he did was wonderful, he was Tommy Lee, a person with many dimensions, a complex character.

Tommy Lee es interpretado por Sebastian Stan, quien se transformó en el rockero. A Sebastian lo conocemos por su trabajo como Bucky en el Capitan America y muchos otros papeles. Pero creo que su personificación como el extrovertido y Excéntrico Tommy, será un personaje que marcará su carrera. Hay un punto cuando se personifica a personas de la vida real que hay que evitar cruzar y es el de la paradia, intentar no convertir a alguien como Tommy en una parodia, es sumamente difícil, y Sebastian lo logró. Lo que hizo fue maravilloso, él era Tommy Lee, una persona con muchas dimensiones, un personaje complejo.

Randy, this character is unknown to many, but he is one of the most important in the plot. He was the worker who stole the Lee's safe where the famous honeymoon video was. He was played by Seth Rogen and I think he was perfect for the role. I was more than once provoked to hit him by Open Mouth 😂, so we know how someone is doing a good role, when someone generates emotions of any kind. Rand is a former porn actor and carpenter who worked on a remodel of Tommy's house, Tommy fired him and as revenge he decided to steal the safe. He said it was for Karma. It is a very strong message, because Tommy owed him money, but the actions taken by Rand were very stupid. I leave it to each one's judgment.

Randy, este personaje es un desconocido para muchos, pero es de los más importantes en la trama. Fue el trabajador que robó la caja fuerte de los Lee en el que estaba el famoso video de la luna de miel. Fue interpretado por Seth Rogen y opino que fue perfecto para el papel. A mí más de una vez me provocó golpearlo por Boca Abierta 😂, así sabemos cómo alguien está haciendo un buen papel, cuando alguien nos genera emociones de cualquier tipo. Rand es un exactor porno y carpintero que trabajó en una remodelación de la casa de Tommy, este lo despidió y como venganza decidió robarse la caja fuerte. Decía que era por Karma. Es un mensaje muy fuerte, porque Tommy le debía dinero, pero las acciones tomadas por Rand fueron muy estúpidas. Lo dejo a juicio de cada quien.

I have to tell you that I waited a long time to see this miniseries because I was very reluctant. I grew up in the 90s, and I was worried that they would make a parody of this story, and I was not only surprised, but I felt like I was in the 90s. The setting, the makeup, the hairstyles (for which they won an Emmy), the music. The setting, the makeup, the hairstyles (for which they won an Emmy), the music. Everything made me travel back to the 90s and I even felt melancholic.

The emergence of the internet was something that marked our lives, especially those of us who are Millennials, and it is one of the defining features of the generation. Listening to the LAN sound when we connected, how we consumed information, what we searched for on the Internet. When my mom installed it in my house, back in the late 90s, I used it to search for information on the Backstreet Boys (I shamelessly say that 😂). But just as it helped us connect to the whole world, it also blew up grotesque things like exposing people's privacy.

Yo crecí en los 90, y me preocupaba que hicieran una parodia de esta historia y quedé no solo sorprendida, sino que me sentía en los 90. La ambientación, el maquillaje, los peinados (por los que se ganaron un Emmy), la música. Todo hacía que viajara a los 90 y me sentí, incluso, melancólica.

La aparición del internet fue algo que marcó nuestras vidas, sobre todo a los que somos Millennials, y es uno de los rasgos que define a la generación. Escuchar el sonido LAN al conectarnos, como consumíamos la información, lo que buscábamos en internet. Cuando mi mamá lo instaló en mi casa, por allá por finales de los 90, lo utilizaba para buscar información de los Backstreet Boys (sin vergüenza lo digo 😂). Pero así como nos ayudó a conectarnos al mundo entero, también hizo explotar cosas grotescas como exponer la intimidad de las personas.

The whole plot is based, not only on the invasion of privacy, but also on the exposure of the women who worked with her body. Pamela Anderson suffered a lot, the sex tape ended her career, she was a joke just because something that should have been kept private came to public light. Many times, during the series, I felt outraged at how she was made to feel, how she was singled out, just for daring to show so much more. As if she had no right. And Tommy Lee, well nothing, he was just a hero who was with Pam in that video. Men never do badly in that kind of videos (well, in Venezuela we know a case where they do).

Things have changed in the last 30 years, though. Platforms like OnlyFans wouldn't have exploded if it weren't for precedents, like Pamela's video, which was the first of many. We know big names today who became famous thanks to the exposure of internet sex videos, such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. But unlike Pam, who did not profit from this on principle, they exploded worldwide.

Pamela Anderson sufrió mucho, el video sexual acabó con su carrera, ella era un chiste solo porque algo que debió mantenerse en privado salió a la luz pública. Muchas veces, durante la serie, me sentí indignada por como la hacían sentir, por como la señalaban, solo por atreverse a mostrar mucho más. Como si no tuviera derecho. Y ¿Tommy Lee?, pues nada, él solo fue un héroe que estuvo con Pam en ese vídeo. A los hombres nunca les va mal en ese tipo de videos (bueno, en Venezuela conocemos un caso en el que sí).

Aunque las cosas han cambiado en los últimos 30 años. Plataformas como OnlyFans no habrían explotado si no fuera por precedentes, como el video de Pamela, que fue el primero de muchos. Conocemos a grandes nombres en la actualidad que se hicieron famosos gracias a la exposición de videos sexuales por internet como el caso de Paris Hilton y Kim Kardashian. Pero a diferencia de Pam que no se lucró de esto por principios, ellas explotaron mundialmente.

I think being exposed in that way is something that not everyone can tolerate. Some were able to take advantage of it, and for others, it ended their careers. They see sexuality as a joke, and many secretly visit those pages and buy magazines, videos, pay for exclusive content. Do I see it as wrong? No, as long as you're not hurting anyone, it's not wrong. But I do think that sex workers deserve to have their rights, not for nothing is the profession known as the oldest in the world.

There is a scene that left me very marked, and it was when Rand's ex (a porn actress) fights with him, saying that the sex video is not porn. That in porn there is something very important which is the Consent, that they sign with the companies a consent to use their images and that obviously neither Pam nor Tommy did it. And this is based on everything we do, if we haven't given permission, you can't do it.

It was nominated for 9 Emmys, of which it only won one, White Lotus defeated it, but it was impossible not to do it with the tremendous competition it had, however, it was a great success and the reviews say so. Bravo for the production, it was magnificent. But, I don't know if I can recommend the film to everyone. You must be very Open Mind, there are a lot of explicit scenes, which, although they are unbelievable, like Tommy talking to his friend. Which I know many people will not tolerate, I thought it was incredibly funny and very accurate. It's a drama, it's got comedy, lots of 90s music and a message. If you can tolerate anything, you can watch it. I watched it through Star+.

! [Spanish] Creo que estar expuestos de esa manera es algo que no todo el mundo puede tolerar. Algunas pudieron sacarle provecho, y a otras, le acabaron la carrera. Ven la sexualidad como un chiste, y muchos visitan a escondidas esas páginas y compran las revistas, videos, pagan por contenido exclusivo. ¿Lo veo mal? No, mientras no le hagas daño a nadie, no está mal. Pero si opino que los trabajadores sexuales merecen tener sus derechos, no por algo se le conoce a la profesión como la más antigua del mundo.

Hay una escena que me dejó muy marcada, y fue cuando la ex de Rand (una actriz porno) pelea con él diciendo que el video sexual no es porno. Que en el porno hay algo muy importante que es el Consentimiento, que ellos firman con las empresas un consentimiento para utilizar sus imágenes y que obviamente ni Pam ni Tommy lo hicieron. Y esto es con base en todo lo que hagamos, si no hemos dado permiso, no lo puedes hacer.

Estuvo nominada a 9 premios Emmys de los cuales solo se llevó uno, la derrotó White Lotus, pero era imposible no hacerlo con la tremenda competencia que tenía, sin embargo, fue un gran acierto hacerlo y las críticas lo dicen. Bravo por la producción, estuvo magnífica. Pero, no sé si les pueda recomendar la película a todos. Deben ser muy Open Mind, hay muchas escenas explícitas, que aunque son increíbles, como la de Tommy hablando con su “amigo”, que sé que muchas personas no tolerarán, a mí me pareció increíblemente graciosa y muy acertada. Es un drama, tiene comedia, mucha música noventera y un mensaje. Si pueden tolerar cualquier cosa, pueden verla. Yo la vi a través de Star+.
