¡Hola a todos, queridos cinéfilos! Es bastante raro cuando vemos una serie basada en algún libro o alguna saga y que quedemos conformes. En mi caso particular, primero conocí el show y después me enteré de los 15 libros de Robert Jordan que inspiraron esta. Cuando vi la primera temporada, estaba en pleno bloqueo lector, y fue el primer libro que tomé después de 4 años. Vi toda la primera temporada con un hambre voraz de capítulo tras capítulo, lo mismo ocurrió con la segunda temporada, en la que veía cada capítulo, cada semana, al ritmo en los que lo iban estrenando en la plataforma de Prime Video.

En esta oportunidad, después de año y medio de espera, me leí los primeros 5 tomos de la saga. La experiencia fue completamente diferente y es lo que les quiero comentar el día de hoy.

Hello everyone, dear moviegoers! It's quite rare when we see a series based on some book or some saga, and we are satisfied. In my particular case, I first learned about the show, and then I learned about the 15 books by Robert Jordan that inspired this one. When I watched the first season, I was in full reader's block, and it was the first book I picked up after 4 years. I watched the entire first season with a voracious hunger for chapter after chapter. The same happened with the second season, in which I watched every chapter, every week, at the pace in which they were being released on the Prime Video platform.

This time, after a year and a half of waiting, I read the first 5 volumes of the saga. The experience was completely different, and that is what I want to tell you today.

The wheel of Time - Season 3

Rand Al’Thor ya ha sido anunciado como el Dragón Renacido, y junto a Moraine Sedai y Egwene, viajan al otro lado de la espina dorsal, a la tierra de los Aiel, la tierra de sus ancestros, de los cuales no sabe nada. Por otro lado, Nynaeve y Elaine parten a Tanchico por mandato de Siuan Sanche, en compañía de Mat y Min a buscar unos artefactos robados por las miembros del Ajah negro. Además, tenemos a Perrin, quien en compañía de Loial y de dos Aiel, parten a Dos Ríos, en donde saben que existen problemas y corren a ayudar. Esta separación de nuestros protagonistas es algo que ocurre muy constantemente en la mayoría de las sagas de fantasía épica, y más aún cuando toman en cuenta “El camino de héroe” para poder construir una saga de tales dimensiones.

Si nos concentramos únicamente en el show, vamos a disfrutarlo plenamente. Tiene un buen ritmo, grandes actuaciones, escenas inolvidables, batallas épicas, personajes que vamos a amar u odiar, muchas canciones pegajosas. Los showrunners de esta producción sinceramente lo han hecho bastante bien. Si nos concentramos en los libros, vamos a encontrarnos con una lectura prolongada, lenta, explícita de cada uno de los paisajes, historias y Lore que complementan este mundo fantástico (como lo haría cualquier escritor que haga una oda a Tolkien). La situación cambia cuando empezamos a comparar.

If we concentrate only on the show, we are going to enjoy it fully. It has a good pace, great performances, unforgettable scenes, epic battles, characters we are going to love or hate, lots of catchy songs. The showrunners of this production have honestly done quite well. If we focus on the books, we are going to find ourselves with a long, slow, explicit reading of each of the landscapes, stories, and Lore that complement this fantastic world (as any writer who makes an ode to Tolkien would do). The situation changes when we start comparing.

Anteriormente, mencioné a Tolkien, y es pertinente su mención en esta reseña, porque cuando se estrenó El señor de los anillos estaba fúrica porque no hicieron todo exactamente como estaba en los libros. Luego me volvió a pasar con Harry Potter, la incomodidad y molestias no eran tan fuertes porque no era tan fanática como de los anteriormente mencionados. Sin embargo, llegó un momento de comprensión con una saga en particular, una que tuvo todo el éxito del mundo, pero pasó algo particular: los libros no estaban terminados y la historia tomó otro rumbo. Ya sabrán que se trata de Game Of Thrones. Aquí comprendí muchas cosas, además de las libertades que se pueden tomar los productores, los libretistas deben tomar lo que tienen para poder cerrar una historia y que esta sea coherente (o no) para el público.

Dicho esto, cuando leemos, tenemos la capacidad de imaginarnos como lucen los personajes y como se van a desarrollar los procesos de desarrollo de cada personaje y de cada una de estas historias. Es bastante complicado, y aún más, alarga los procesos de producción, de grabación y todo lo que esto conlleva, además que involucra un costo monetario gigante, así que hay escenas o tramas dentro de las historias que unen o eliminan para poder llevar un hilo conductor coherente a lo largo de la temporada y de todas las temporadas. Por lo que, yo decidí desde hace mucho tiempo ver este tipo de shows con otros ojos. Quiero ver como resuelven las historias que decidieron llevar por otro camino. De esta manera disfruto de las producciones de una forma más técnica, sin perder el objetivo de ver todo esto, que es simplemente entretenimiento.

Previously, I mentioned Tolkien, and it is pertinent to mention him in this review, because when Lord of the Rings was released I was furious because they didn't do everything exactly as it was in the books. Then it happened to me again with Harry Potter, the discomfort and discomfort was not as strong because I was not as fanatical as I was about the aforementioned. However, there came a moment of understanding with a particular saga, one that had all the success in the world, but something particular happened: the books were not finished, and the story took another direction. You may already know that it is Game of Thrones. Here I understood many things, besides the liberties that producers can take, the writers must take what they have in order to close a story and make it coherent (or not) for the audience.

That said, when we read, we have the ability to imagine what the characters look like and how the development processes of each character and each of these stories are going to unfold. It is quite complicated, and even more, it lengthens the processes of production, filming, and all that this entails. Plus, it involves a giant monetary cost, so there are scenes or plots within the stories that unite or eliminate to carry a coherent thread throughout the season and all seasons. So, I decided a long time ago to watch this kind of shows with different eyes. I want to see how they resolve the story lines that they decided to take a different path. This way I enjoy the productions in a more technical way, without losing the objective of watching all this, which is simply entertainment.

Creo que si todos le diéramos la oportunidad a las historias adaptadas, de mirarlas por la historia, más allá de como lucen, disfrutaríamos aún más de lo que nos ofrecen hoy. Pero si debo ser completamente clara con algo, que si algo no funciona con algunas adaptaciones, también hay que decirlo y no engañarnos. Esto solo se trata de abrir nuestra mente un poco más. En esta adaptación, si lo han hecho muy bien, tanto, que en cuanto termine la lectura que estoy llevando actualmente, me leeré el 5.º libro, que lo dejé abandonado hace un año. I think if we all gave the adapted stories a chance, to look at them for the story, beyond how they look, we would enjoy even more what they offer us today. But if I must be completely clear about something, that if something doesn't work with some adaptations, we should also say so and not fool ourselves.
