La vida secreta de las acompañantes universitarias | Reseña y opinión

Hay películas que son difíciles de catalogar en un rango negativo si se toma en cuenta todos los elementos que tiene, porque puede ser que su argumento sea malo, pero tiene buenos actores, o la historia es buena los actores son buenos, pero el ambiente, el maquillaje o la dirección no fue la mejor. También sucede que todas las partes estuvieron bien, pero su cierre fue malo. Entonces tomar una decisión es más difícil para un crítico de cine. Una de las películas que me pone en una decisión difícil es The Secret Life of College Escorts, porque tiene muchos elementos que no me gustaron pero otros sí.

Es una película relativamente nueva del año 2022, de suspenso mi género favorito y con las actuaciones de Pilot Paisley-Rose, Laurie Fortier y DJames Jones actores que si bien no son tan famosos han hecho varias películas y para mí ya son conocidos.

Sinopsis

Unas amigas estudiantes universitarias asisten a una fiesta, una de ellas muere de manera sorpresiva y en hechos turbios. Eve que está pasando por el luto de su amiga pierde su beca de estudios y desesperada acepta un trabajo que aparentemente es la mejor solución, sin saber que está relacionado con la muerte de su amiga.

Las películas que se inspiran o usan de recursos para el desarrollo de su historia que pueden ser reales para mí tiene una buena base. Existen miles de jóvenes que estudian con becas y por cualquier motivo las pierden ocasionando estrés y angustia cambiando la dirección de sus vidas, seguir estudiando en la meta, pero sin recursos económicos no se puede.

Es lo que le ocurrió a Eve, que tenía una beca por deporte y que le fue injustamente eliminada; sin embargo, en el mismo ambiente estudiantil surge una oportunidad para trabajar en medio tiempo, tenía que hacer de dama de compañía de altos ejecutivos y millonarios, cuando aceptó el trabajo no sabía de qué trataba, pues nunca le hablan claro sobre sus funciones y para comprometerla cancelan sus deudas estudiantiles.

Este método es usado en empresas de modelos que usan esta fachada para ocultar su verdadero propósito, jóvenes que caen en redes de prostitución o de acompañantes. Caer en estas redes es fácil, salir es lo difícil y ese es el nudo de la película. Eve se entera de todo y realiza un plan para desenmascarar a esta mafia.

Hay algunas escenas con buen thriller; sin embargo, hay muchos huecos en los personajes, cortes abruptos en los diálogos y escenas que confunden.

En un 80% la película se desarrolló de forma lineal, pero en la última parte la dirección quiso apresurar todo, tal vez por falta de presupuesto y dieron un corte abrupto, con un final ridículo sin sentido que parece hasta chiste, dañando todo el thriller y la impresión que se ha hecho el espectador, por ese final me cuesta calificar esta película ganándose un 70 que a pesar de todo no es tan mal.

There are films that are difficult to rate negatively when you take all their constituent elements into account, because the plot might be poor but the acting is good, or the story might be good and the acting is good, but the atmosphere, make-up or direction haven’t been up to scratch. It also happens that all the elements are good, but the ending is poor. That’s why it’s harder for a film critic to reach a verdict. One of the films that presents me with a difficult decision is The Secret Life of University Escorts, because it has many elements I didn’t like, but others I did.

It’s a relatively new film from 2022, a thriller – my favourite genre – starring Pilot Paisley-Rose, Laurie Fortier and DJames Jones, actors who, although not particularly famous, have appeared in several films and are already familiar to me.

Synopsis

A group of university friends go to a party; one of them dies unexpectedly in murky circumstances. Eve, who is mourning her friend, loses her scholarship and, in desperation, accepts a job that, on the surface, seems like the best solution, without realising that it is linked to her friend’s death.

I feel that films which are inspired by or draw on real-life elements to develop their story have a solid foundation. There are thousands of young people studying on scholarships who, for whatever reason, lose them, causing them stress and distress and changing the course of their lives; continuing their studies remains the goal, but without financial resources it is not possible.

This is what happened to Eve, who had a sports scholarship that was unfairly withdrawn; however, within the same student environment, an opportunity arose to work part-time: she was to act as an escort for senior executives and millionaires. When she accepted the job, she did not know what it entailed, as her duties were never clearly explained to her, and, to bind her to the arrangement, her student debts were written off.

This method is used by modelling agencies that employ this façade to conceal their true purpose: young people who fall into prostitution or escort networks. Falling into these networks is easy; getting out of them is the hard part, and that is the crux of the film. Eve finds out everything and devises a plan to expose this mafia.

There are some scenes with good thriller pacing; however, the characters feel underdeveloped, the dialogue is often abrupt, and some scenes are confusing.

For about 80 per cent of the film, the plot unfolds in a linear fashion, but in the final section the director seemed to want to rush everything – perhaps due to a lack of budget – and made an abrupt cut, resulting in a ridiculous and nonsensical ending that feels like a joke, which completely undermines all the suspense and the impression the viewer has built up; because of that ending, I find it hard to rate this film, which gets a 70 – which, all things considered, isn’t too bad.
