[Movie] The Endless Summer Syndrome: The Secret That Destroyed a Family | Review and opinion
Welcome 💖 Bienvenidos

Have you ever had a bad experience and felt that time in that situation dragged on forever, that it stood still, and that the days or hours wouldn’t pass so that the misery would end? That’s what the title of this film refers to. ‘An Endless Summer’ is a story in which a secret comes to light during a holiday that seems to go on forever; it all takes place over the course of a weekend, with the story unfolding in reverse chronological order from Friday to Monday, if I remember correctly, and during that time the suspense builds right up to the end, when everything is fully revealed.
Everything revolves around a family consisting of the father, the head of the household, who is a writer and spends most of his time at home; he enjoys cooking and is the one who caters to the other family members’ culinary preferences. Then there is his wife, a lawyer with a successful career who works outside the home; she is the one with the strongest personality and is responsible for guiding and disciplining the children.

This family has two older children who are coming out of their teenage years: the girl, who seems like a normal young woman, and the boy, who is seen to have unusual interests; he is fascinated by the biology of exotic animals and keeps poisonous snails and other rare species in his room.
I found the first few minutes of the film rather dull, perhaps because it portrayed a perfect family: loving parents who get on well and respectful children, but let’s remember that perfect families don’t exist. Just as I was about to stop watching the film, one scene took me by surprise: they showed the mother changing her clothes; she undressed completely to put on a swimsuit. At first I thought: ‘What a completely out-of-place scene’; I thought it was a contrived device to keep the viewer’s interest, but then I saw a scar on her lower abdomen, like the ones women have after a caesarean section, and I thought 🤔 ‘there’s a message here, they’re trying to show us something’, and I wasn’t wrong. That scar symbolised pregnancies rather than births, meaning her children were adopted; this is very important for the rest of the film.

The plot took an unexpected turn when, during the countdown I mentioned earlier, we saw the children giving statements to the police, clearly showing signs of trauma. Something very bad had happened, as these were flashbacks to the past; whilst they said nothing—because it’s not clear what’s going on—we cut back to scenes with the whole family; we were seeing the past, but here something happened that marked a turning point: the mother receives an anonymous call informing her of an alleged confession made by her husband, whilst drunk, in which he mentions that he regrets having had a relationship with one of his children. 😱
From that scene onwards, I went mad; I had a lump in my throat; can you imagine having to deal with news like that in your own life? How would you handle it? Well, I’m not sure I’d be as level-headed and composed as our protagonist; her character really embodied her profession – she investigated as best she could through analysis and observation, and although she got it wrong at first, she eventually managed to uncover the truth. Of course, all sorts of thoughts were racing through her mind: why would they tell her that? What did they stand to gain? Perhaps it was slander, or maybe they wanted to destroy her family – but what if it were true and she’d never even suspected it?
I really identified with Delphine and was saddened by what was happening to her. There were moments when Delphine felt guilty for suspecting and thinking the worst of her family; however, as she gradually verified everything, she dealt with her frustration by bottling up her emotions, put on a brave face and decided to carry on as if nothing were wrong; she wasn’t the sort of woman to let something like that slide, and, in the end, discovering the truth led her to make a decision.
Those summer days felt like an eternity to me, especially as 80 per cent of the action took place in the very house where they lived; because events unfolded so quickly, I didn’t have time to speculate much or try to guess the characters’ reactions. I won’t say any more so as not to give away any spoilers that might spoil your experience.
It’s a tough film because I’m sure that, if these things happen in real life, it hurts all the more when there’s betrayal, child abuse and infidelity; it contains explicit XXX-rated content that should only be viewed by adults. It’s one of the few films I wouldn’t watch again because of the suspense and anxiety it caused me, but it’s undoubtedly a good film; the whole story really took me by surprise, and the characters were well developed; it’s possible to make good films without a huge budget or investment. If you like films that make you think, this one’s for you.

A rather complex plot, according to your review it seems like a good option, friend.

That’s a lot – it touches on a very sensitive issue that could well be true. Have a lovely evening – thanks for dropping by.

Wow, I love movies where things happen gradually and not everything is as it seems, and scenes are revealed little by little. For me, it's great! Your review is very thorough, it's super!
