Have you ever wondered what motivates a person to become a monk, or if it was the circumstances of his life that forced him, the truth is that it is a very sacrificial, solitary lifestyle and that in past centuries was very mysterious since little was known about their customs and daily routines, with the recent culmination of Holy Week and the death of Pope Francis I felt like watching this movie The Monk, leaving me with a feeling of surprise, sadness, anger, anger and guilt, it is not easy to see because you need calm although the story fills you with anxiety because of the suspense.
When I saw it I didn't know I was watching the adaptation of an old gothic novel written by Matthew Gregory Lewis, it was first published in 1796. They wanted to make an adaptation for opera but it was objected for its scandalous content, then they made plays and it was until recently when it was taken to the movies I guess now the population is ready for this type of content, the latest version was published in 2011 and is the film that I review today, starring Vincent Cassel, written and directed by Dominik Moll.
The film begins with the confession of a man to the monk, about his desire for his niece who secretly have a relationship, the monk judges him harshly and tells him that his behavior is reprehensible, in that conversation the man asks the monk if he is not afraid of being tempted by the devil and he replies "Satan only has the power we give him" from there he already had an idea where the whole story was going, although at this point he agreed with the monk's statement.
After that, there is a backtrack in the story to show how the monk named Ambrosio arrived at the monastery, it turns out that he was abandoned by his mother, the intention was to kill him and the person who was supposed to do it repents and preferred to leave him with the monks, there he was adopted, educated and raised by the monks so his whole world was in the cold walls of big bricks of the monastery. When he came of age he became a monk and leader of the monastery because of his knowledge of the scriptures and his way of expressing himself.

Te has preguntado qué motiva a una persona a convertirse en un monje, o si fueron las circunstancias de su vida que lo obligaron, lo cierto es que es un estilo de vida muy sacrificado, solitario y que en siglos pasados era muy misterioso, ya que poco se sabía de sus costumbres y rutinas diarias, con la reciente culminación de la Semana Santa y la muerte del papa Francisco me dieron ganas de ver esta película El monje, dejándome una sensación de sorpresa, tristeza, ira, enojo y culpa, no es fácil de ver porque se necesita calma aunque la historia te llena de ansiedad por el suspenso.Cuando la vi, no sabía que estaba viendo la adaptación de una novela gótica antigua escrita por Matthew Gregory Lewis, se publicó por primera vez en 1796. Quisieron hacer una adaptación para ópera, pero fue objetada por su contenido escandaloso, luego hicieron obras de teatro y fue hasta hace poco cuando se llevó al cine supongo que ahora la población está preparada para este tipo de contenido, la última versión fue publicada en el año 2011 y es la película que hoy reseño, protagonizada por Vincent Cassel, escrita y dirigida por Dominik Moll.
La película comienza con la confesión de un hombre al monje, sobre su deseo hacia su sobrina quienes a escondidas tienen una relación, el monje lo juzga con dureza y le dice que su conducta es reprochable, en esa conversación el hombre le pregunta al monje si él no tiene miedo de ser tentado por el diablo y él le responde "Satanás solo tiene el poder que le damos” desde allí ya tenía idea por donde iba toda la historia, aunque en este punto estaba de acuerdo con la afirmación del monje.
Después de eso, hay un retroceso en la historia para mostrar cómo el monje de nombre Ambrosio llegó al monasterio, resulta que fue abandonado por su madre, la intención era matarlo y la persona que debía hacerlo se arrepiente y prefirió dejarlo con los monjes, allí fue adoptado, educado y criado por los monjes por lo que todo su mundo estaba en las paredes frías de grandes ladrillos del monasterio. Cuando cumplió la mayoría de edad, se hizo monje y líder del monasterio por su conocimiento de las escrituras y su forma de expresarse.

This is the first element that creates suspense after that appears another enigmatic character a new monk with a mask who says he is disfigured and for this reason he wears the mask, he calls himself Valerio, at first for the viewer it is not clear if he is a man or a woman but it is clear that he is behind Ambrosio, turning out to be a woman who is obsessed with Ambrosio and has come to tempt him.
This woman is a kind of witch who with enchantments manages to seduce Ambrosio, and terrible events begin to happen for the monastery, mysterious samples and once Ambrosio tasted the elixir of the flesh 🤣😂, he already wanted to try something else, it came true the woman of his dreams was a young girl who had come to ask for his help to visit her sick mother so she could ease the burden on her heart, Ambrosio fell in love with this young girl but obviously he was not reciprocated one because he is a monk and another because the young girl was also engaged and was soon to be married.
Seeing the reality drove Ambrosio mad, he wanted her madly and that is when his lover from the monastery Valerio offered his help, and they decided to perform sorcery to put the young woman to sleep so the monk could satiate his baser instincts. This scene is so heartbreaking that I found it hard to believe it happened, I hated Ambrose, he was the devil himself and to top it off he committed the worst of all crimes not only raped the young girl but also murdered her mother who caught him, he detail is not he raped and killed but what was in his past that connected him to these women. After this I felt very sorry for him, his life was sad, and I really feel that he was not to blame for what he did but he has to pay, it is a bit confusing the emotions he leaves behind.
The ending is an allegory of what we think is the punishment for our sins, who are we going to be accountable to, if we sell our soul what would happen and how can we come to an agreement with Satan. Its ending is very reflective, and when it is about to end we see a seed of love. It is the struggle between good and evil, also recognizing that we are all vulnerable to sin and that we cannot judge and point fingers at others. It is very good, at first it may seem slow, take into consideration that its genre is drama and suspense, this is another movie that I would repeat in the future.

Ambrosio realiza la misa y su elocuencia y devoción llamá la atención sobre todo a las jovencitas. Él está seguro de su propósito en la vida, pero algo lo perturba cuando duerme tiene una pesadilla recurrente de una mujer con una capa roja que llega al monasterio a buscarlo pero nunca ve su rostro. Este es el primer elemento que crea suspenso después de eso aparece otro personaje enigmático un nuevo monje con una máscara, dice que está desfigurado y por esta razón usa la máscara, se hace llamar Valerio, al principio para el espectador no está claro si es un hombre o una mujer pero sí que está detrás de Ambrosio, resultando ser una mujer que está obsesionada con Ambrosio y ha llegado para tentarlo.Esta mujer es una especie de bruja que con encantamientos logra seducir a Ambrosio, y comienzan a pasar sucesos terribles para el monasterio, muertes misteriosas y una vez que Ambrosio probó el elixir de la carne 🤣😂, ya quería probar otra. Se hizo realidad la mujer de sus sueños era una jovencita que había ido a pedir su ayuda para que visitará a su madre enferma y pudiera alivianar la carga de su corazón, Ambrosio se enamoró de esta joven pero obviamente no fue correspondido uno porque es monje y otro porque la joven también estaba comprometida y se iba a casar pronto.
Ver la realidad enloqueció Ambrosio la deseaba con locura y es cuando su amante del monasterio Valerio le ofreció su ayuda, y decidieron hacer hechicería para dormir a la joven y el monje pudiera saciar sus bajos instintos. Esta escena es tan desgarradora que me costó creer que sucediera, odié Ambrosio, era el propio demonio y para completar cometió el peor de todos los crímenes no sólo violó a la joven sino también asesinó a la madre de ella que lo sorprendió, él detalle no es haya violado y matado sino lo que había en su pasado que lo conectaba a estas mujeres. Después de esto sentí mucha lástima por él, por su vida, fue triste y en realidad siento que no tuvo la culpa de lo que hizo pero tiene que pagar, es un poco confuso las emociones que deja.
El final es una alegoría de lo que pensamos es el castigo de nuestros pecados, a quien le vamos a rendir cuentas, ¿si vendemos nuestra alma que sucedería?, y cómo podemos llegar a un acuerdo con Satanás. Su final es muy reflexivo, y cuando ya va terminar se ve una semilla de amor. Es la lucha entre el bien y el mal, también de reconocer que todos somos vulnerables al pecado y que no podemos juzgar y señalar a los otros. Es muy buena, al principio puede parecer lenta, tomen en consideración que su género es el drama y el suspenso, esta es otra película que repetiría en el futuro.
