This film is based on a real-life kidnapping case, in which a teenage girl in the United States was abducted by a couple of religious fanatics; after spending almost a year away from her family, Elizabeth was eventually rescued.

Documentaries have been made about this story, as well as this film, which features a first-person narration by Elizabeth Smart herself, in which she recounts the terrible experience and how she eventually regained her freedom and her identity.

Elizabeth was abducted whilst sleeping in her own bed; we see someone wake her up and say something that makes her get up and go with this person, without screaming or fighting back. I couldn’t understand how things had happened; I wondered if it could have been a family member, and during the first few minutes of the film I felt bewildered – I couldn’t concentrate on the narrator, as she kept saying she was confused and scared.

The script and direction were designed to make the viewer feel and suffer the kidnapping just as the girl did. It was only once she was taken from her home and taken into the woods that she managed to identify her kidnapper; he was a man who had worked at her house and who seemed like a kind person, which is why he didn’t force his way in and, to take her away, threatened to take her sister if she didn’t cooperate.

From the very first day, Elizabeth was stripped of her name and innocence, subjected to psychological and physical abuse. The kidnappers were a couple, a man and a woman; both held Elizabeth captive, believing it to be a divine mandate. The kidnapper created a fantasy in which he was an envoy of God and, therefore, had to have several wives and live in poverty. They read the Holy Scriptures and forced Elizabeth to submit to their distorted interpretations; she was repeatedly raped, beaten and starved.

This girl tried to escape several times, but could not; they kept her chained up like an animal. They were very distrustful, so it took Elizabeth a long time to win their trust. Whilst they worked on Elizabeth’s mind to make her get used to and accept her cruel fate, they moved several times to other cities far from her family, and although two opportunities arose to ask for help, her mind froze and she could not.

This kidnapping had a happy ending, but it left Elizabeth with lasting trauma and scars; her case allowed for a better understanding of kidnapping victims and human behaviour. It is a film that leaves you speechless; you cannot judge this girl, it makes you realise how easy it can be to lose what is most precious in life, such as freedom, identity and integrity.

There are elements that suggest it wasn’t a costly production, as most of the film was shot in a natural setting, with few characters and minimal costumes. I liked the first-person narration with voice-over by the protagonist herself.

Es una película de un secuestro real, producido por una pareja de fanáticos religiosos a una adolescente en los Estados Unidos, Elizabeth luego de pasar casi un año lejos de su familia pudo ser rescatada.

De esta historia se han hecho documentales y esta película que cuenta con la narración en primera persona de la misma Elizabeth Smart, en donde relata la terrible experiencia y cómo terminó recuperando su libertad y su identidad.

A Elizabeth la secuestraron mientras dormía en su propia cama, se ve como alguien la despierta y le dice algo que hace que ella se levante y se vaya con esta persona, sin gritar ni luchar, yo no podía entender cómo pasaron las cosas, me pregunté si podía ser un familiar y durante los primeros minutos de la película me sentí desconcertada, incluso no podía concentrarme en la persona que narraba, pues decía lo mismo que estaba confundida y asustada.

El guion y la dirección buscaba que el espectador sintiera y sufriera el secuestro como lo vivió la niña. Una vez que la sacan de su casa y la internan en el bosque es que logra identificar a su secuestrador, se trataba de un hombre que trabajó en su casa y que parecía una persona amable, por eso no forzó la entrada y para llevársela amenazó con llevarse a su hermana si no cooperaba.

Desde el primer día Elizabeth fue despojada de su nombre e inocencia, sometida a maltratos psicológicos y físicos. Los secuestradores eran una pareja un hombre y una mujer, ambos retuvieron a Elizabeth, con la idea de ser un mandato divino, el secuestrador creó una fantasía donde él era un enviado de Dios y, por lo tanto, debía tener varias esposas y vivir en la mendicidad. Leían las santas escrituras y obligaban a Elizabeth a someterse a la tergiversación de sus interpretaciones, fue violada repetidas veces, golpeada y llevada a la desnutrición.

Esta niña intentó huir varias veces, pero no pudo, la mantenían encadenada como un animal eran muy desconfiados por lo que Elizabeth le costó ganarse su confianza, mientras trabajan la mente de Elizabeth para que se acostumbrara y aceptara su cruel destino se mudaron varias veces a otras ciudades lejos de su familia y aunque se presentó dos oportunidades para pedir ayuda su mente se bloqueó y no pudo.

Este secuestro tuvo un final feliz, pero dejó a Elizabeth traumas y secuelas para siempre, su caso permitió investigar mejor a las víctimas de secuestro para comprender la conducta humana. Es una película que te deja sin críticas, no puedes juzgar a esta niña, te hace ver que puede ser fácil perder lo que más vale en la vida como la libertad, la identidad, la integridad.

Hay elementos que hacen pensar que no fue una producción costosa, ya que la mayoría de la película se firmó en una ambiente natural, con pocos personajes y poco vestuario. Me gustó la narración en primera persona con voz en off de la propia protagonista.
