The Knights of the Zodiac: The lost canvas (2009) Review [Eng - Esp]

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Having already culminated and finished my reviews of the Saint Seiya franchise movies for now, because if they would certainly get to release a new movie, obviously I will talk about it, but for the moment it has not been the case and although certainly the experience reviewing each movie, was certainly entertaining with its good and bad points either in the format that is, I was a little dissatisfied so to expand and give more weight, not in this case to his movies but rather to his series or seasons, what better way to review a season or ova, which in my opinion is one of the best at a structural level in several ways and the curious thing about all this is that it is a spin off and it is not a work made by Kurumada himself (mangaka and creator of Saint Seiya) no, but by a mangaka called Shiori Teshirogi who took as a base all the manga of Saint Seiya, to elaborate, write and draw a good spin off and the result in my opinion is too good in many aspects the truth.

I don't want to discredit the work of Mr. Kurumada with all this, the sagas of the twelve houses, Poseidon and Hades were very entertaining and my favorites, showing me in each one an aspect linked to their saints or knights in bonds as duties as saints of Athena, good ideals linked to morals and ethics, and above all courage and intelligence as well as complexity in one or another character in some points, in this case in each character, but in this spin off such aspects already mentioned are presented with a better structuring in several points and I liked that very much, so in due time I will take to the task of making certain comparisons in both works and why for me such aspects are so relevant, because personally this spin off is worth a lot, so ladies and gentlemen this time I bring you Saint Seiya: The lost canvas.

Synopsis / Sinopsis

The events that are exposed in this ova begin a long time ago, compared to what can be witnessed in Saint Seiya, the story focuses on the life of a young man named Tenma, a girl named Sasha and her little brother and best friend of Tenma, Alone these are 3 orphans who live their daily lives in Italy in their own way, but fate will have different plans for them when a young guy named Sisifo the knight or golden saint of this era, seeks Sasha as this is the reincarnation of Athena and comes with the intention of taking her to the temple, and because of this decision both Tenma and sadly Alone by their nature so kind will be linked in events that will mark them for life in individual ways.

There are really many aspects linked to the structuring of this spin off, that personally I like too many, I will try to be as critical as possible with the comparisons that I will make now before the work that I present this mangaka and the series of Saint Seiya, before solid aspects that to my mere consideration and perception are quite justifiable, maybe I can take a little bit of time, being detailed and even lengthen a little bit, I apologize for that beforehand, but once I finish touching those comparative points I will proceed to segment each base linked to the animation, plot and atmosphere as usual and I usually do, but for the moment I want to focus on this. I would like to start in comparative terms with the golden saints, in Kurumada's series the saints show a great variety of techniques and personalities very marked and ingrained based on their behaviors and mentality as well as their personalities, we can witness much better this in the saga of the twelve houses, I have a preference or affection for some knights more than others, such as Aioros of Leo or Shaka of Virgo and Mu of Aries at the time for their principles, postures and duties well being represented as elite saints of Athena I liked them quite a lot in general terms.

However as the sagas continued the weight and significance of each golden saint was lost, in my opinion their relevance was overshadowed in many aspects, even in the saga of Hades where they were humiliated or in the saga of Poseidon, for me this was a low blow, now in comparison to the golden saints of this spin off it is the opposite, their relevance is still maintained even in their last moments of struggle, they have an even more marked and firm personality, we can notice a stronger and unique background certainly linked to each golden saint in their own way, here each saint has such a significant and important weight that is not dismissed at all, as it should be, for me this was a crucial point, now in relation to the saint of Pegasus of this era, I could certainly say that he has some similarities with Seiya but it is not quite so, I would dare to say that this saint of Pegasus which is called Tenma has a development in some aspects a little better structured, it is more consistent with his training, his promise as a friend and man is prioritized but without abusing that principle as a crutch and above all his gradual growth as a character, I really liked this character, Kurumada's Seiya is certainly a great character, an insignia in the classic shonen, but he weakens a little in the aspects I said before.

And to culminate with these comparisons I would like to address all the setting linked to this holy war and the misfortune of these 3 main characters in this season, I really liked how it was in between a background between Tenma of Pegasus, Sasha the current reincarnation of Athena in this century and Alone the boy who will serve as a vessel for Hades, it is a sad concept caused by fate, but followed by an interesting dynamism between each character the truth, Sasha the Athena in this century, shows a more serious and determined behavior when facing this holy war, she doesn't beat around the bush and she is not victimized or a princess in trouble that must be rescued every moment, on the contrary she shows a greater temper and tenacity in several areas as a human, friend and representative of a god, compared to the Athena of the movies or the series, in which most of the times she is kidnapped, bent and helpless and it is a point that I liked a lot. As I mentioned before, I don't want to discredit Kurumada's work with this, I still like Saint Seiya at this point, but it is true that in this spin off they covered a great part of those lacks, now let's touch the bases part by part of this spin off.

Let's start with the animation section, here personally I have no complaints, it shows a very crisp and acceptable animation in many aspects, either in the decorations and color of the armor, whether the faction of Athena or Hades, the sky where it is certainly reflected and as the name of this spin off is certainly beautiful, as well as everything that is linked to this point in the structures of the temples and everything that make it up, In the animation aspect everything that is linked to what I mentioned before is very well done even the facial expressions, typical of the characters of this franchise or even spin off being attractive characters or with very fine or delicate features and Sasha is beautiful the truth I have no complaints with her either at this point hahahah.

In relation to the plot, it is certainly more than entertaining, here we are really presented in a gradual way the events that will lead to a war, of which two factions will fight one to protect humanity and another to destroy it and in the middle of it a promise to fulfill and rescue a great friend, I like how this kind of things from small to large are linked, certainly at this point as well as the fights are magnificent and beautiful and the animation of the skills and means to use the strategy as well, There are several points that together I liked a lot and there are characters that reach you in many ways, as in my case which formed a great affection and appreciation to characters like Manigoldo of Cancer or Cid of Capricorn or Albafica of Pisces or Dohko of Libra here, but obviously being a war much of them will fall in battles, growth linked to our three main characters and friends is also quite noticeable I have no complaints in this section.

The section of the setting is very good, we are presented in a scenario in which life and death hang in the balance but with some advantage for the faction of Athena is a war after all, accompanied by a geographical and rural section very old times, with a somewhat heavy background individually to each character is for the faction of Hades also shows aesthetic level and personality armor very cool in my opinion as well as his castle and the gods who are with him. It is really worth giving it a chance, I feel that if you like to see Saint Seiya this would be a good start because they are events long before what we can see in the work of Kurumada chronologically clear, it is worth giving it a chance and it is a pity that the continuation was not followed as it should the animation level, beyond being shown in the manga the truth, but that's the Japanese world with this, sometimes it is very unfair. And with this I finish the review for this spin off, I had a long time that I did not talk about a series or this in particular, I feel more fulfilled now, as always I hope it has been pleasant reading for you and excuse me if I lengthen more than necessary and thank you for coming here, until next time.
