Yu-Gi-Oh Season (Zero) 0: What was and could never remain (1998) Review [Eng - Esp]

A long time ago, I took the initiative to review some movies of the Yu Gi Oh! Duel monsters franchise, only those that really caught my attention, and now satisfied with that part and with that cycle completely closed, I would like to take this opportunity to talk in this case not about a movie, but rather about a season, a season which perhaps not much is known about it, and shows a partially different dynamic to what most know of the series that many of us saw, of Yugi's adventures with his friends, using monster cards and other effects, in this season that dynamic changes and extrapolates to other things which make some sense but with a much murkier weight.

So, in terms of what one could come to see as strong themes, sadistic, Machiavellian and even partially questionable behaviors this season has them, but in its respective moment I will talk about the why behind all this and how despite the change that was given later and became the Yu-Gi-Oh we all know, still and curiously this previous season has its charm, so ladies and gentlemen this time I bring you the season zero of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Hace un largo tiempo atrás, tome la iniciativa para poder reseñar algunas películas de la franquicia de Yu Gi Oh! Duel monsters, solo aquellas que realmente llamaron mi atención, y ya satisfecho por esa parte y con ese ciclo completamente cerrado, me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para no hablar en este caso sobre una película, si no mas bien sobre una temporada, una temporada la cual quizás no se sabe mucho sobre ella, y muestra una dinámica parcialmente diferente a lo que la mayoría conoce de la serie que muchos vimos, de las aventuras de Yugi junto a sus amigos, usando cartas de monstruos y otros efectos, en esta temporada esa dinámica cambia y se extrapola a otras cosas las cuales tienen cierto sentido pero con un peso mucho mas turbio.

Así que, en términos de lo que uno podría llegar a ver como temas fuertes, conductas sadistas, maquiavélicas y hasta parcialmente cuestionables esta temporada las tiene, pero en su respetivo momento hablare de el porqué detrás de todo esto y como a pesar del cambio que se le dio después y se convirtió en el Yu – Gi - Oh que todos conocemos, aun y curiosamente esta temporada anterior tiene su encanto, así que damas y caballeros esta vez les traigo la temporada cero de Yu- Gi- Oh.

Yu - Gi - Oh (Toei) is the title of the first animated series completely based on the original manga series, this adaptation was produced for the first time by the animation studio Toei, and broadcast for TVAsahi from April 4, 1998 to October 10 of the same year in question with a total of 27 chapters. This series covers the first 7 volumes of the original manga, created by Kazuki Takhashi in 1996 and published for the first time in Shonen Jump magazine.

Despite having similarities and being based on the original manga, this season has no direct relation with the Yu-Gi- Oh Duel Monster that we know.

Yu - Gi - Oh (Toei) viene siendo el titulo de la primera seria animada completamente basada en la serie de manga original, dícha adaptación fue producida por primera vez por el estudio de animación Toei, y emitida para TVAsahi desde el 4 de abril de 1998 hasta el 10 de octubre del mismo año en cuestión contando con un total de 27 capítulos. Esta serie abarca los primeros 7 tomos del manga original, creados por Kazuki Takhashi en 1996 y publicados por primera vez en la revista de Shonen Jump.

A pesar de tener similitudes y estar basados en el manga origina, esta temporada no tiene ninguna relación directa con el Yu- Gi- Oh Duel monster, que conocemos.

The plot focuses on the life of a young boy named Yugimoto (Yugi) a quiet, introverted and insecure boy, but the life of this character will change when he assembles his millennium puzzle, in which inside it dwells the soul of a pharaoh named Atem or Yami Yugi. It is after these events that Yugimoto's world will change drastically as he will be involved in crazy situations, which will not only affect his life but also the lives of others and Yami Yugi's intervention will be crucial using the "shadow games" as a means.

La trama se centra en la vida de un joven chico llamado Yugimoto (Yugi) un chico tranquilo, introvertido e inseguro, pero la vida de este personaje cambiara cuando arme su rompecabezas del milenio, en el cual dentro de este habita el alma de un faraón llamado Atem o Yami Yugi. Es después de estos sucesos que el mundo de Yugimoto cambiara drásticamente ya que este se verá envuelto en situaciones de carácter descabellado, que no solo afectaran su vida si no la de otros y la intervención de Yami Yugi será crucial usando como medio los "juegos de la sombra"

Before giving what I think about this season as such and the impressions it gave me in the points I made earlier in the introduction of this review, let me contextualize a little about what season zero is in itself, and why it was not presented in the following seasons to come with these characteristics a little more crude. As you may know by now, Yu-Gi-Oh didn't start out as just a card game or dueling monsters with various characteristics, whose main base of seriousness or horror was focused on the context of the "shadow realm", it started out as something a bit more raw or macabre, and this manga has nothing to do with the current yu- gi- oh that we all know, as it was the first project, he was given the opportunity to animate this manga, without having such an established structure and go on the fly, but with a certainly interesting plot.

Now the reason why here yugi is given the title of "king of the games" unlike the other one we know, is because the variant when it comes to face certain serious risk situations are very different, because events occur with a more cruel or harsh tone, things like kidnapping, robbery, terrorism, manipulation and destruction of others, and the pharaoh intervenes saving the day and confronting the perpetrators of these acts, with games of different variety, games in which life is at stake, and breaking the rules of the game itself will only cause the other player to lose his life in a horrible way, meaning that there is a justification for these acts, because they are not good people, of course this yugi or yami yugi is a little more sadistic and cruel but he does it for a reason and it is because of injustice, so as the pharaoh he is, he shows his authority in cruel and ingeniously malicious ways.

In this season we are shown Seto Kaiba, and the concept of the card monster game, but it is more of a subplot that will be shown later on, since what takes more weight here, in the interaction of the pharaoh or Yami Yugi in dangerous situations with various people, this is what takes more weight here, between that the interaction of the good Yugi with his friends and one or two other characters that perhaps do not have so much weight and are only as comic relief, I am happy to know the fact that in essence most of the personalities of the group of Yugi's friends are maintained, perhaps with slight changes but in essence they are the same, except for Kaiba and his brother which here are a little more crude and cruel.

Now in relation to the plot, a great part of the characteristic charm in this season, are the interactions or actions that Yami Yugi takes to solve the situation and his wit behind them, making a great contrast with his counterpart, the most naive or insecure Yugi, particularly in depth and as the episodes progress, it shows a variety of people with evil intentions or dangerous situations that will not only lead Yami Yugi to act but also his group, Now one thing that I did not like so much is that the good Yugi, so to speak here is too insecure for my taste, at least the other Yugi that we know in the other seasons, he was insecure but not so much and it was seen that he improved a lot and became someone with character and security, leaving that aside the plot is entertaining and shows raw and interesting nuances.

Regarding the animation, the truth is that it is a somewhat old animation, it is not something completely unique or outstanding but considering the time in which the manga was allowed to be animated it is understandable, although here the main weight is not so much the animation but the plot and its narrative, although the animation is not the best at least it is partially acceptable, It is worth mentioning that because this season was not so well received by the public at the time, it was not continued again with a plot of this form, and the concepts of dueling monsters and other points were implemented in the other yu- gi- oh that we know by its mangaka. Antes de brindar lo que pienso, ante toda esta temporada como tal y las impresiones que me dio en los puntos que remarque anteriormente en la introducción de esta reseña, permítanme contextualizar un poco sobre lo que es en si la temporada cero, y porque no se presento en las siguientes temporadas venideras con estas características un poco mas crudas. Como sabrán a estas alturas Yu- Gi- Oh, no comenzó solo siendo un juego de cartas o duelo de monstruos con varias características, cuyo mayor base de seriedad o terror se enfocara en el contexto del "reino de las sombras", este empezó siendo algo un poco mas crudo o macabro, de el primer manga llamado "yu- gi- oh el rey de los juegos" y este manga no tiene nada que ver con el yu- gi- oh actual que conocemos todos, como fue el primer proyecto, se le dio la oportunidad de animar dicho manga, sin tener una estructura tan establecida e ir sobre la marcha, pero con una trama ciertamente interesante.

Ahora la razón por la cual aquí se le da el título de "rey de los juegos" a yugi a diferencia del otro que conocemos, es porque la variante a la hora de llegar afrontar ciertas situaciones de riesgo graves son muy diferentes, porque ocurren acontecimientos con un tono mas cruel o duro, cosas como secuestro, robo, terrorismo, manipulación y destrozos ajenos, y el faraón interviene salvando el día y afrontando a los perpetradores de estos actos, con juegos de diversa variedad, juegos en los cuales se apuesta la vida y el llegar a infringir o romper las reglas del mismo juego en sí, solo hará que pierda la vida el otro jugador de una manera horrible, es decir que se tiene una justificación para estos actos, porque no son buenas personas, claro este yugi o yami yugi es un poco mas sadista y cruel pero lo hace por una razón y es por la injusticia así que como faraón que es, muestra su autoridad en maneras crueles e ingeniosamente maliciosas.

En esta temporada se nos muestra a Seto Kaiba, y el concepto del juego de monstruos de carta, pero viene siendo más que nada una subtrama que se mostrara de a poco mas adelante, ya que lo que cobra mas peso aquí, en la interacción del faraón o Yami Yugi ante situaciones peligrosas con diversas personas, esto aquí es lo que cobra mas peso, entre eso la interacción del Yugi bueno con sus amigos y uno que otro personaje que quizás no tenga tanto peso y solo están como alivio cómico, me alegra saber el hecho de que en esencia gran parte de la mayoría de las personalidades del grupo de amigos de yugi se mantenga, quizás con ligeros cambios pero en esencia son los mismos, exceptuando a Kaiba y su hermano los cuales aquí son un poco mas crudos y crueles.

Ahora can relación a la trama, pues gran parte del encanto característico en esta temporada, son las interacciones o acciones que toma Yami Yugi para solventar la situación y su ingenio detrás de ellas, haciendo un gran contraste con su contra parte, el Yugi más ingenuo o inseguro, ahondado a ello particularmente y a medida de que avanzan los episodios, se muestra una variedad de personas con intensiones ruines o situaciones peligrosas que no solo orillaran a Yami Yugi a actuar si no al grupo de él, ahora una cosa que si no me gusto tanto es que el Yugi bueno, por así decirlo aquí es demasiado inseguro para mi gusto al menos el otro Yugi el que conocemos en las otras temporadas, el si era inseguro pero no tanto y se vio que mejoro bastante y se convirtió en alguien con carácter y seguridad, dejando eso de lado la trama es entretenida y muestra matices crudos eh interesantes.

Con relación a la animación, la verdad es que es una animación algo vieja, no es algo completamente único o sobresaliente pero considerando la época en la cual se le permitió llegar animarse dicho manga es comprensible, aunque aquí el principal peso no lo lleva tanto la animación si no la trama y su narrativa, aunque la animación no sea la mejor al menos es parcialmente aceptable, no están mala pero tampoco tan buena que digamos, cabe mencionar que debido a que esta temporada no fue tan bien recibida por el público en su momento, no se volvió a continuar con una trama de esta forma, y los conceptos de duelo de monstruos y otros puntos se implementaron en el otro yu- gi- oh que conocemos por parte de su mangaka.
