A Ballad Of A Small Player

Lord Doyle is a gambler trying to escape his debts and the mistakes of his past. He finds temporary refuge in Macau, drifting between casinos and luxury hotels, until his past inevitably catches up with him.

When he meets the mysterious Dao Ming, his life takes an unexpected turn. What follows is a high stakes game where salvation and ruin seem to be dealt from the very same deck.

Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Colin Farrell delivers a strong, mature, and quietly melancholic performance.
  • The supporting cast is equally solid.
  • The cinematography is outstanding, at times genuinely breathtaking.
  • Edward Berger directs with confidence and precision.
  • Macau's neon soaked nighttime palette is visually stunning.
  • The idea of exploring loneliness beneath the glamour of gambling is compelling, at least in theory.

  • The surreal elements, especially in the second half, weaken the overall impact.
  • The film leans too heavily into narrative ambiguity and excess.
  • Its slow pace doesn't work in its favor.
  • The second half is noticeably weaker than the first.
  • The dialogue often falls flat.
  • The biggest issue is that the film tries to juggle too many genres without fully committing to any of them. Is it neo noir? An existential drama about grief and loss? It never quite decides. 🤷‍♂️
  • The ending is... meh.

George Clooney stars as a famous actor at a turning point in his life. Alongside his longtime manager, played by Adam Sandler, he embarks on a journey across Europe, where they're forced to confront the choices of the past, the relationships they left behind, and the legacy they will ultimately leave.

Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • George Clooney delivers a good performance. Nothing extraordinary, but he's the emotional core of the film. His natural charisma makes the character feel authentic and effortless.
  • Adam Sandler steals the show in a role that's very different from what audiences usually expect from him. Quiet, melancholic, and deeply human.
  • The chemistry between the two leads is one of the film's biggest strengths.
  • Strong supporting performances across the board, especially from Laura Dern and Billy Crudup.
  • The film thoughtfully explores the price of fame and the illusion of the celebrity lifestyle.
  • It has a gentle, easygoing tone that makes it an enjoyable watch.
  • Noah Baumbach's screenplay offers a number of sharp and memorable lines.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • I wish it had been a bit sharper and more daring in what it wanted to say.
  • It's sweeter and more sentimental than I would have liked.
  • It falls back on a few familiar genre clichés.
  • It could have benefited from a shorter runtime.
  • The direction is perfectly competent, but never particularly inspired.
  • And they just keep talking... and talking... and talking. 😅😅
