Rebel Moon

Since I saw the trailer for Rebel Moon, I was eager to witness what Snyder would bring to Netflix. Like probably anyone who watched the movie, I had a similar reaction. It's not that this is the worst movie of the year, but perhaps it's a film with tremendous untapped potential.

As an original creation, it harbored some promising ideas that didn't appear to be fully realized. Instead of delving into the depth of these concepts, Snyder opted to incorporate them all at once, resulting in a somewhat clichéd two-hour action piece reminiscent of series from the late '90s or early 2000s, albeit with significantly improved effects.

The narrative unfolds quickly, and within the first five minutes, you find yourself immersed in a familiar setup: an evil empire oppressing peaceful villagers while good rebels emerge to challenge them.

Amidst the overarching conflict, there's an outcast heroine compelled to confront the fight she had long avoided. She assembles a group of outcasts who somehow manage to take on the evil empire, despite the expected betrayals they endure.

Certain scenes leverage music to evoke emotions, yet the impact is diminished when a character, meets an inconsequential demise due to a lack of substantial character development. The pacing feels simplistic, giving the impression of watching a movie tailored for children.

It's akin to envisioning a scenario where ChatGPT was tasked with writing a sci-fi movie script, then came a great director with millions of dollars backed by netflix believing that this will be the next Star Wars and they created this atrocity that after watching it nothing really makes sense.

Then came the Snyder fans who started asserting that he intended to make the movie longer and not adhere to a PG-13 rating. They claimed that the Snyder cut would be superior, and everything would fall into place. However, if that is indeed the case, why not start by creating a movie that doesn't compromise its quality, instead of initially producing a version only to later attempt to improve it with a better cut?

Edit.
I asked ChatGPT to make me a script for a soap opera.
Title: Cosmic Rebellion

INT. EVIL EMPIRE'S COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT

The galaxy is under the oppressive rule of the Malevolent Dominion, led by the tyrannical Emperor Xerion. The Rebel Forces, led by the charismatic General Alyssa, plan their next move to overthrow the empire.

GENERAL ALYSSA
(whispering to the rebels)
It's time to strike back. We can't let the tyranny continue.

EXT. REBEL HIDEOUT - DAY

A ragtag group of rebels, including the skilled pilot Ethan, the cunning spy Isabella, and the loyal soldier Marcus, prepares for a daring mission to steal vital information from the Malevolent Dominion.

ETHAN
(to Isabella)
This is our chance. We need to succeed.

INT. MALEVOLENT DOMINION'S SPACE STATION - NIGHT

The rebels infiltrate the heavily guarded space station, engaging in intense hand-to-hand combat and stealthy maneuvers. Isabella discovers a dark secret about a betrayer within the Rebel Forces.

ISABELLA
(whispering to Ethan)
We have a traitor among us.

EXT. SPACE - EPIC DOGFIGHT

The rebels escape the space station with the stolen information, triggering a massive space battle. X-wing fighters and TIE fighters clash in a breathtaking display of laser beams and explosions.

INT. REBEL HIDEOUT - NIGHT

The rebels analyze the stolen data, realizing the Malevolent Dominion is developing a superweapon capable of destroying entire planets. The traitor's identity is revealed - it's Captain Renard, a once-loyal ally.

ETHAN
(angry)
Renard betrayed us all.

The rebels plan a desperate assault on the Malevolent Dominion's fortress before the superweapon is completed.

EXT. MALEVOLENT DOMINION'S FORTRESS - DAY

The rebels launch a daring ground assault. Hand-to-hand combat ensues as they fight their way through the fortress. Ethan confronts Captain Renard in a personal duel.

ETHAN
(bitter)
You were like a brother to me.

RENARD
(power-hungry)
Power is everything.

Isabella sacrifices herself to disable the fortress shields, allowing the rebels to breach the core.

INT. MALEVOLENT DOMINION'S THRONE ROOM - NIGHT

General Alyssa faces Emperor Xerion in a fierce lightsaber duel. The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance.

GENERAL ALYSSA
(evoking hope)
The galaxy deserves freedom!

Alyssa defeats Xerion, ending his reign of terror. The rebels celebrate, but the victory comes at a heavy cost.

EXT. REBEL BASE - DAY

Ethan mourns Isabella's sacrifice, realizing the true price of war. The galaxy begins to rebuild, and a newfound hope emerges from the ashes of rebellion.

Way better than what rebel moon offered!

Maybe I won't rush out to make time to watch this one! 😁

better watch the Snyder cuts when they release them probably this month!

I wholly agree! It's not the worst bit of sci-fi I've ever watched (I even watched a worse movie this weekend), but it definitely left me wanting a whole lot more than what it delivered. I worry this is one of those situations where Snyder is a great director, but should just stick to directing other people's source materials rather than attempting to make up his own.

Yes the budget saves the movie to be labeled as the worst ever!

I saw this movie a few nights ago because I like science fiction movies, and I fully agree with your review.
The movie started well but then as it went along it disappointed my expectations which were very high.
A watchable movie but nothing that will make me remember it in some time.
However, I am curious to see if the second part will improve and I read that it will be released in a few months
