A House of Dynamite

A nuclear missile has been launched and is heading toward the United States. No one knows who sent it, and in just minutes it is set to strike and wipe out the city of Chicago and everyone in it. The top figures in government and the military have only 18 minutes to decide how to respond. They have trained for this. But what does training matter when your world is literally about to end? Is it worth it?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Excellent cast with very strong performances. I especially liked Rebecca Ferguson.

  • Tense and immersive, it makes you feel what it might be like to experience such a situation.

  • Strong direction by Kathryn Bigelow, delivered with near masterful precision.

  • It manages to create anxiety through the realistic possibility of a nuclear threat.

  • The overall theme is compelling and offers interesting insights.

  • Episodic style of storytelling.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • The ending is divisive and will likely disappoint a large portion of the audience.

  • The characters are frightened, contradictory, desperate. Do not expect gadgets or action stunts.

  • Idris Elba as the President of the United States is average.

  • There are hints of propaganda, though it is better not to get stuck in that mindset.

Christy

Christy Martin never imagined a life beyond her roots in a small town in West Virginia until she discovered she had a unique talent: throwing punches. Driven by grit, determination, and a fierce desire to win, she dives into the world of professional boxing under the guidance of her coach, manager, and later husband, Jim. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Visually, Sydney Sweeney’s transformation is impressive.

  • Performance wise, she pleasantly surprised me with a solid and layered portrayal, though I did not see awards level potential.

  • Ben Foster is outstanding as the trainer and manipulative husband.

  • Based on a true story, it made me want to look up more about the heroine afterward.

  • From a directing standpoint, it had realism and emotional intensity.

  • I really liked the mother daughter relationship and their toxicity.

  • Strong parallel between physical fighting and the personal fight for freedom.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • It could have been slightly shorter.

  • It follows the familiar “rise, fall, redemption” pattern.

  • I wanted more emphasis on the fights, which feel somewhat surface level, and less on the training.

  • There are a few exaggerations toward the end.

  • Although it aims to tell a story spanning many years, several elements are treated superficially without deeper development.

  • It has uneven moments.
