Entrapment

An insurance company employee tries to trap the world's greatest art thief by proposing that they pull off a spectacular heist together. But in this game of cat and mouse, who is really trapping whom? Released in 1999. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones are both incredibly charismatic.
  • A very enjoyable and easy watch.
  • Cleverly incorporates the Millennium Bug (Y2K), which was a major concern at the time, into the story.
  • A fairly intelligent screenplay that avoids many of the clichés common in similar films.
  • A well-structured adventure with a solid pace.
  • High-quality production with great locations.
  • A good balance of humor and suspense.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • From a directing standpoint, considering its premise, it could have been more visually impressive 🤷‍♂️.
  • The paradox is that while the leads had great chemistry in some scenes, in others it just didn't work for me ☹️.
  • I wasn't particularly impressed by the ending (purely a personal opinion).
  • Ving Rhames is an actor I generally like, but here he feels like more of the same.

Black Rain

An American police officer travels to Osaka in search of a murderer and becomes caught up in a gang war involving the Japanese mafia. This 1989 action thriller stars Michael Douglas. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Directed by Ridley Scott, back when he was at his most inventive and creative.
  • Visually impressive and entertaining.
  • Dark atmosphere with plenty of classic 1980s vibes 😅.
  • The nighttime Tokyo of that era looks absolutely stunning.
  • Hans Zimmer does a great job with the soundtrack.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • It doesn't fully explore the social and political commentary it could have offered on the relationship between the United States and Japan at the time.
  • I wouldn't consider this one of Michael Douglas's stronger performances. 🤷‍♂️
  • The screenplay feels somewhat unremarkable.
  • Packed with clichés.
  • It lacks a truly memorable element that would make it stand out as a film.

Ridley Scott really did fall off. I kinda feel the same with Spielberg who seems to be stuck just retelling the same stories.
