What To Watch Tonight
The Pickup
A routine cash pickup takes a wild turn when two mismatched armored-truck drivers, Russell (Murphy) and Travis (Davidson), walk straight into an ambush by ruthless criminals led by Zoe (Palmer), whose plans go far beyond the cash payload. More of the same? Sure.
🟢🟢🟢🟢
• It has a more interesting second half (relatively speaking).
• If you are a fan of the genre you will have a good time.
• Keke Palmer as Zoe leaves a positive impression.
🔴🔴🔴🔴
• Pete Davidson… can someone tell me who keeps casting him in films? Completely talentless.
• Eddie Murphy left unused.
• A script that is just more of the same with every cliché of the genre.
• Performances done on autopilot.
• Basic direction.
• Predictable ending.
• It has its excesses.
• Bad CGI.
• Eva Longoria 🤷♂️.
The Invisible Man
Cecilia is an abused woman trapped in a brutal relationship from which she manages to escape. She finds refuge in the home of a police officer she knows, and shortly after she learns that her violent partner has committed suicide. But he, a pioneering scientist in optics, has a nasty surprise in store for her.
A 2020 thriller that dropped right at the start of Covid and, for me, a very pleasant surprise, mainly thanks to Elizabeth Moss’s performance.
Moss carries the entire film on her shoulders and through her expressive acting gives real depth to the character, making her completely believable in everything she goes through.
I found the film highly atmospheric (credit to the director), frightening at points, inventive, with an excellent ending that for me brings redemption through a rather sadistic solution.
It is almost a b-movie horror that balances between old and new, pulled off successfully thanks to Whannell’s direction. It plays with themes of personal autonomy and privacy and does so in a clever way.
It has a few genre clichés and some characters are not explored in depth. A plot twist toward the end didn’t convince me personally, but that is minor compared to the overall result.
A pleasant cinematic surprise with a well crafted structure, escalating tension and strong suspense that definitely deserves your attention.
