The Curse of Shelby Oaks

Mia is desperately searching for her sister, who vanished during the final shoot of her viral investigative series, Paranormal Paranoids. As suppressed memories begin to surface, the line between reality and hallucination starts to blur. Strangely enough, it is better than you expect. Is it worth watching though?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Solid performances, especially from the sister, who is also the lead.
  • The found footage element is handled quite well.
  • Strong atmosphere.
  • Nice editing.
  • I found it fairly engaging up until the halfway point.
  • Good pacing.
  • It has a few genuinely scary scenes.
  • Nice cinematography.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • The third act and the ending in general felt a bit rushed.
  • Some effects were bad, though understandable given the low budget.
  • It relies on some predictable clichés.
  • There are a few repetitive scenes.
  • The script loses steam after the midpoint, without being a total waste.
  • The more conventional narrative it adopts in the second half unfortunately hurts it.
  • Some of the characters’ decisions did not make much sense to me.
  • Predictable finale.

The Roses

Life seems easy for the seemingly perfect couple, Ivy and Theo: successful careers, a loving marriage, wonderful children. But behind the polished facade of their ideal life, a storm is approaching. A comedic take. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are a joy to watch, in my opinion.
  • It has some funny scenes and lines, along with delightfully absurd moments.
  • Features some beautiful locations.
  • Very strong supporting performances, especially the friendly couple Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, as well as Allison Janney.
  • Witty dialogue, sarcastic and cynical.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • On a script level, there is a noticeable clash between romantic comedy and dark comedy, with no clear winner.
  • Unfortunately, it is less combative than its predecessor 🤷‍♂️, opting for a flatter approach.
  • Although the supporting cast is good, they remain relatively underused.
  • A rather cautious effort overall.
  • It has pacing issues.
