Winning Time

Let's talk about Winning Time.

I don't know how many watched it, but it's an HBO production that follows the empire building of the Showtime Lakers, starting with their takeover by Dr. Buss in 1980 and the acquisition of Magic Johnson.

Now you tell me, do you recommend us to see her? What if we don't care about basketball at all and don't know anything about the NBA? In turn I will answer the following questions:

Is it a series that talks about much more than basketball, with interesting characters and a very good portrayal of the climate of the 80s? Yes

If instead of basketball if he dealt with some legendary baseball or hockey team, even if it was a masterpiece would you watch it? HELL NO. So I have no idea if I would recommend it to someone who isn't interested in the sport.

Nevertheless, it fulfills many criteria of a good series, such as an excellent cast and perhaps the most realistic depiction of the 80s that we have seen since the time of Chernobyl (as opposed to the stylized fluo version of stranger things that more echoes the aesthetics of 80s films, but not the real 80s life,).

The series has been criticized a lot for various reasons.

First criticism that it is not historically accurate. That the characters are exaggerated and often (as in the case of Jerry West) completely different from the real historical person. Many events are presented in a completely different way than they happened (eg, that Magic himself dictated to his coach the position he would play in the finals)

Second criticism is that he uses a lot of tricks (personally I found the way he does it very successful) such as using different kinds of camera (film/video - even different aspect ratio) or breaking the 4th wall with characters talking directly to the viewer.

You can never do justice to the real deal. Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson were truly amazing players with a drive to win, and they are actually nice guys. It sounds like it might be interesting but film makers can never stick to the real history, changing things for dramatic effect is too tempting. I'll check it out just for fun, the 80's were an interesting time to grow up in!

I have no interest in professional basketball. I watched 1 1/2 episodes and agree the show is well made, but I didn't care to watch any more of it.
