What I'm Watching: Late to Firefly

I have been catching up on some TV shows lately. One that I never got around to watching before was Firefly. I know some people around here are big fans. It first came out in 2002, so I was a little late. Unfortunately it was cancelled after one season. That does mean that some of the themes never got fully developed. I am sure there would have been a lot more backstory, especially around the special powers that one character had. It really is a space western with the various colonised planets being like western towns with local outlaws. It is a real shame it did not continue as the characters were strong. There is a movie sequel which I have seen, but I need to see again now I know the characters. The series is on Disney+, but I need to check where I can see the movie.

This week I just finished Marvel's Secret Invasion. This continues some themes from Captain Marvel about the Skrulls race who have sought sanctuary on Earth. They are shapeshifters, so they can blend in. Nick Fury promised to find them a new home, but when he failed to deliver some of the Skrulls decide that they should take the Earth. It is centred around Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who is now 74. It does play on him being an old man. The cast is pretty good with Don Cheadle playing Colonel Rhodes again plus Olivia Coleman having great fun as an MI6 agent. There are some great scenes between the leads and some decent action, but a lot of people were disappointed overall. Some reasons are given why the Avengers do not help out, but an unspoken one would be the cost. The ending leaves some questions unanswered, but is due to lead on to the next movie The Marvels. which is due out soon. I think there can be too much many movies and shows from Marvel, so it is hard to keep track of everything. I have watched most of it, but have not read many comics.

Apart from these I have been watching the latest season of Young Sheldon with my other half. This has its charms as some light entertainment. There is a nice reference to cryptocurrency in one episode.

I also need to watch the second season of Game of Thrones. I never saw it originally as we do not have Sky. You can find the box sets in charity shops and I got the second one for just £2 recently. I shall watch that fairly soon. I see the second half of the thirds season of The Witcher is now on Disney+, so I am going to watch an episode right now.

GoT2

What are you watching? We have access to so much content these days. Apart from the free UK services we have Disney+ and Netflix. That gives us enough to fill our spare time. I just have to live with not seeing some shows unless I pay up extra. I know some people get illicit downloads, but I do not generally bother to seek those out.

Firefly was the greatest show in the 'verse. nothing finer. and of course various participants went on to other great shows. Gina Torres in Suits was great. Nathan Fillon is fun in The Rookie, and Castle was okay. Morena Baccarin was good in the V reboot, and of course Deadpool.
& a whole eyeful of Christina Hendricks, who went on to Madmen.

I'm kind of watching Rizoli & Isles atm, when I remember. fun by the numbers buddy cop/coroner show with nice easily guessable villains.

now, your watching this cult classic should never have been cancelled show now....well you are in for a treat..

I've watched them all and it was fun. I get what the fuss was about.

avatar

such a shame they made no more....

avatar

These shows are expensive and companies will not necessarily do what the fans want. Seems there are rumours of it being revived, but it's been a while.

Firefly was an awesome show, it was too bad they only gave it one season. Some great stars came out of the cast, once you finish up the season then you have to watch "Serenity". It was the movie that finishes out the story. Have fun, you've been watching some very cool stuff!

avatar

I'll try to catch the movie again soon. It's so long since I saw it that I don't remember what happened.

avatar

I've not been watching so may TV shows recently but have watched a few movies. I tend to go in fits and starts. I worked my way through Benidorm last I think, Colin from Accounts and the most recent series of The Crown.

Awakenings is a film watched recently and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

avatar

I've not watched The Crown, but others in the family have. There is another Star Wars show due soon and the latest Guardians of the Galaxy will be streaming soon. I just have to decide what I really want to see. We sometimes have a movie on a Saturday night.

Did you watch Serenity after you finished Firefly? It wraps things up pretty nicely if you haven't yet. I'm getting ready to start Secret Invasion. I haven't really had time though.

avatar

I saw it before, but don't remember it. I think it was on Netflix before, but I may be able to rent it cheaply. I just can't keep up with everything as I don't want a huge amount of TV. We may go to the cinema again soon. Oppenheimer is getting good reviews.

avatar

I think I would want to see Oppenheimer. I have heard lots of great things about it. It looks pretty epic. I try not to watch as much TV either, it gets hard though.

Firefly was such a great show and a cool idea of sci-fi series, it's a shame it never got the chance it deserved, however, I have heard rumours about the cast getting it back together, although, these rumours have been around for a while.

Game of Thrones is such a great show, and has such an amazing cast of characters and really showcases a pretty dark world and setting.

I actually watched the first new episode of Futurama which recently came out and I'm looking forward to the next episode to come out.

There is so much I haven't seen. I did not know about new Futurama, so I need to have a look. I saw a fair bit of it previously, but probably not all. A lot of the US shows have so many episodes.

I haven't seen it myself yet but the way you describe it is very interesting and the video I've seen has been very interesting so I'll try to do the same sometime in the future. Will definitely check and let you know how i feel.

avatar

You never saw ALL of Game of Thrones? I guess its not on Netflix (having watched it all years ago). Just finished Peaky Blinders, now on to Black Mirror.., the latter is strange.

avatar

I didn't see any until we got season 1 from a charity shop. I have never paid for Sky. I've seen bits of Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror, but not got into them. Just have to pick and choose.

avatar

I liked firefly, it was a great show. I haven't delivered into much in the way of marvel as there is so much of it. Will have to be selective in what I chose there. Might go for that one above soon

avatar

It could take months to work through all the Marvel stuff, but a lot of it is connected. I may watch some of the movies again. It's just about all on Disney+. I like a bit of escapism rather than gritty drama.

avatar

It's the good thing about Disney+ I was leary at getting it at first as I thought it was all Mulan and show your and the like but it's got loads of good stuff

avatar

My son wanted it originally for Marvel stuff, but we've watched lots more.

avatar

We have watched a lot of movies on it. My only complaint is that the smart TV app is a bit rubbish compared to others

avatar

Game of Thrones for the x time.. lol
I've got a lot of stuff moved from DVDs to Plex so private streaming if you like.

I enjoyed "Marco Polo" on Netflix and if I remember rightly did it end on a battle just about to start with NO follow-up season! 😄

I am therefore not spending too much time on their stuff; I rely on recommendations and will ALWAYS be late..

avatar

I know most people who would watch it have seen GoT, but I'm not as late as with Firefly.

I did watch The Witcher last night. Lots of blood!

I have never set up Plex, but I have enough to watch. We used to use a hard disk recorder, but most stuff can be streamed now. Years ago I had MythTV recording stuff on the PC. Things have changed since then.

Things have changed since then

Sure have..
What happened to those Google glasses? Next step chip in the brain to watch multiple programs at once?

avatar

The companies are trying to hook us in to watch more. At least the paid streaming services do not have ads. You pay one way or another.

avatar

Ads make me stop to watch! I can just about bare channels advertising their own stuff, but only just!

avatar

Firefly was a darn good series. It's been awhile since I last watched it, and may have to give it another run sometime (yes, I have it on DVD). Surprisingly, someone I went to high school (it was a BIG high school) with had a small role in Firefly.

We haven't seen Secret Invasion yet, and no interest in Game of thrones (I read the first book years ago and didn't like it)

avatar

I've not read the GoT books, so I don't know what's coming. I enjoy a bit of fantasy. I do find some of these shows have so many characters and factions that it's hard to remember who they all are.
