► About

Based on the Robert Heinlein book this is about "bugs" who are at war with humanity! However while looking at the overall film as an action films it has deep and meaningful socio-political meaning. Not only about class but also about what it means to be a citizen of the Human race. It was widley slammed when it came out although now I think with some of his other films is seen as a classic of its time!

► What you loved about it

It is so pure in its approach to its open "Paul Verhoven" style. It kind of does what is says on the tin. Its action scenes are excellent and for some reason I have watched it many times! However I have read the book many times and it is nothing like the book. In many of its descriptions it does say "loosely based" on the source material.

11.png

► How it influenced me

I am not sure it has influenced me, only in as much as it is a good fun piece of escapism. The book on the other hand was almost an obsession of mine as I read all of his books during a period of my life. They are interesting books that he writes all bit it many times from a neo fascist stand point. Starship Troopers is not an exception.

11.png

► What part of it did you find most interesting.

The adverts and news footage the are in between the action are definitely a highlight, would you like to know more? These adverts tell you a lot about the story. It also shows you the propaganda machine behind the war and also how serious it all is for the survival of the human race!

11.png

► Any scene that still pops into your mind.

All the bug fights are good fun and a little bit gory! When they first land on the Bug planet they get horribly defeated! There are lots of limbs falling off everywhere. This is where they realise that humans are maybe not the rulers of the galaxy!

► Performance of the actors/actress that left an impression.

I can't say it has a stellar performance cast! Michael Ironside plays a teacher and then Captain in the army and probably has the most stand out performance. This is not saying much although Clancey Brown gives him a run for his money! This was never going to be remembered for its acting masterclass!

I loved the movie but don't you think the cast were intended to be slightly pastiche? 50s B movies had chiselled jaw, slightly thick heroes and heroines who were far too beautiful!

It's just a great movie, whether intentionally so or not, on so many levels.

That's all I wanted to say. I will wish you well as I depart for a quiet Denise Richards moment :-)

I think there were intended to be like that! Also going off for a quiet Denise Richard moment.....

a parody that works as a recruiting tool - almost makes it a horror film😱

I always loved this movie, and got made fun of plenty by dates I forced to watch it.
It is so gloriously cheesy and over gory. Love it

good write up, Glad you mentioned that it only sort of tracks/based on the novel. Although I like the movie, I agree, not a stellar performance by the cast and director. Like you, I have read the novel many times, and have even read it back-to-back with Joe Haldeman's Forever War, which makes for a good contrast and interesting discussion (did a panel at an SF convention on this very comparison). If you haven't read Forever War, you should put it on your reading list, and if you have, try doing a back-to-back read of both books.

The movie changed a lot of characters (Dizzy was a throw-away character killed in the first chapter if I recall right, and in the film, turned female as a love interest for Rico, as well as a few other changes and character consolidation). Zim was probably the closest character to being faithful to Heinlein's depiction.

Very good choice! I watched the movies and read the books. It does perfectly satirise the psychological propaganda used in our times without giving the reasons for it - but is also a huge propaganda piece in and of itself. I could summarise it as a film that promotes very strongly the big bang life has no meaning and we live on a spinning potato rock flying at millions of miles per hour. If this was a Christian film, the main character would be sporting long hair and wearing sandals. I love it!

My favourite Verhoeven movie!
In the US they didn't like this movie and it flopped there.
Especially after Paul Verhoeven revealed that he made the movie
to (partly) make fun of war politics of the US.
He basically said that the US fights so many senseless wars,
that once they have fought every country in the world,
they'd start fighting other planets and aliens who would otherwise
have never been a bother to us.
I think this could be true if there was anything like this planet of
huge bugs...they'd definitely try to fight and take over haha.

So yeah, he didn't make friends in the US but that was never his intention
anyway. You beat me to it, writing about this one...so now I had to go for another hehe.

avatar

lol, well he was definitely making some points! What ya gonna write about?

Something went wrong. More than one person using the same computer goes wrong sometimes LOL. Anyway, yeah, Avatar is what I wrote about, but you know that now hehe.

This was not one of my favorite movies but I appreciate the review.

Really like this film, it was one of a kind when it was released, and I love watching it.
