Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Espero que muy bien. Yo, particularmente, me encuentro bien, por lo que les vengo a traer una serie muy interesante para mostrarles. He de admitir que este descubrimiento surgió principalmente por un TikTok. Usualmente, lo que se recomienda allí no es que sea muy bueno, pero hay personas que sí hacen recomendaciones excelentes. Me gustó la sinopsis y la forma en que el creador explicó la trama, por lo que decidí echarle un vistazo para ver qué tal. ¡Vaya sorpresa la mía! Me encontré con un drama lleno de suspenso y misterio que atraparía a cualquiera que lo viera. La verdad, no sé si es muy desconocido, pero obviamente vengo yo a darle más visibilidad por lo bueno que está.

Se trata de un dorama, una serie coreana. Últimamente, Corea ha estado produciendo obras excelentes, o al menos eso aplica a las que yo he visto. Por ejemplo, la que vi después de esta, Pyramid Game, también la recomiendo mucho.

Antes de comenzar, quiero advertirles que esta serie aborda temas sensibles como el suicidio, aunque su objetivo principal es servir como un método de prevención en contra del mismo. Supongo que fue creada con ese propósito. Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos de Death's Game o El juego de la muerte en español.

Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you all doing today? I hope you're very well. Personally, I'm doing fine, so I’ve come to share a very interesting series with you.

I must admit that this discovery came about mainly through a TikTok. Usually, the recommendations there aren’t all that great, but some people do make excellent suggestions. I liked the synopsis and the way the creator explained the plot, so I decided to give it a look to see what it was like. And what a surprise! I found a drama full of suspense and mystery that would hook anyone who watched it. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s very obscure, but obviously, I’m here to give it more visibility because it’s just that good.

It’s a dorama, a Korean series. Lately, Korea has been producing some excellent works—or at least that’s been the case with the ones I’ve seen. For example, the one I watched after this, Pyramid Game, is also one I’d highly recommend.

Before we begin, I should warn you that this series deals with sensitive topics such as suicide, though its main purpose is to serve as a form of prevention against it. I suppose it was created with that intention. So, without further ado, let’s talk about Death's Game.

La serie nos pone en la piel de Choi Yi-jae, un joven desempleado que intenta lo imposible para salir adelante. Realiza múltiples entrevistas de trabajo, pero fracasa en todas ellas, ya que la sociedad lo menosprecia por tener empleos de medio tiempo. Su única felicidad podría decirse que era su novia, pero un día, al llegar a su casa, la ve con otro hombre recibiendo flores. Ahora, habiendo perdido todo —incluso su hogar por no poder pagarlo—, decide subir a un edificio para acabar con su vida, convencido de que su existencia no importa ni a sus seres queridos.

Tras suicidarse, despierta en el limbo, donde es castigado por la Muerte en persona por haberse quitado la vida antes de tiempo. Su condena consiste en revivir 12 veces en cuerpos de personas que están a punto de morir. La única forma de ganarle a la Muerte es que, en alguna de esas vidas, Yi-jae logre sobrevivir hasta la vejez en el cuerpo que se le otorga. Al principio, se muestra resignado a jugar, pues él deseaba estar muerto, pero conforme vive las vidas de otros, irá descubriendo poco a poco el significado de la existencia y qué la hace valiosa.

The series puts us in the shoes of Choi Yi-jae, a young unemployed man who tries everything to get ahead. He attends countless job interviews but fails every time, as society looks down on him for only having part-time work experience. His only happiness, you could say, was his girlfriend—until one day, he comes home to find her with another man, accepting flowers from him.

Now, having lost everything—even his home, as he can no longer afford rent—he climbs to the top of a building to end his life, convinced that his existence means nothing, not even to those he loves.

After taking his own life, he awakens in limbo, where Death herself punishes him for cutting his life short. His sentence? To be reborn 12 times into the bodies of people on the brink of death. The only way to beat Death is if, in one of these lives, Yi-jae manages to survive into old age in the body he’s given.

At first, he resigns himself to the game—after all, he wanted to die. But as he lives through the lives of others, he slowly begins to uncover the meaning of existence and what truly makes life worth living.

Me encantó que esta serie tenga de todo. Dependiendo de la vida que le toque, el protagonista adoptará las emociones e incluso habilidades de esa persona, pudiendo conservarlas para futuras vidas. Cuando digo "habilidades", no me refiero a superpoderes, sino, por ejemplo: si le toca ser un mafioso, será experto en artes marciales y armas; si es un boxeador, tendrá sus capacidades, y así con las doce vidas.

Otro aspecto que me fascinó es el mensaje de la obra. A medida que avanza, vemos las repercusiones del suicidio de Yi-jae: lo que él creyó que no afectaría a nadie, en realidad daña a muchas personas, haciéndolo sentir culpable. Pero lo más conmovedor es el dolor de una madre por su hijo, mostrando cómo haría cualquier cosa por su felicidad y el vacío que dejaría su pérdida, especialmente de la forma retratada en la serie.

Sin embargo, creo que lo que más enganchará al público es el misterio. No quiero entrar en detalles para evitar spoilers, pero la trama se vuelve fascinante cuando se revela el culpable de todos los males de Yi-jae, dejando claro que sus doce vidas —incluso la original— estaban conectadas entre sí.

I loved that this series has a bit of everything. Depending on which life he’s given, the protagonist takes on the emotions—and even the skills—of that person, retaining them for future lives. And when I say "skills", I don’t mean superpowers, but rather, for example: if he becomes a gangster, he’ll master martial arts and weapons; if he’s a boxer, he’ll inherit those abilities, and so on across all twelve lives.

Another aspect that fascinated me was the story’s message. As the plot unfolds, we see the repercussions of Yi-jae’s suicide: what he believed would hurt no one actually devastates many, leaving him racked with guilt. But the most heart-wrenching part is a mother’s grief for her son—how she’d do anything for his happiness and the crushing void his loss would leave, especially in the way the series portrays it.

That said, I think what will really hook the audience is the mystery. I won’t go into details to avoid spoilers, but the plot becomes utterly gripping when the true culprit behind Yi-jae’s suffering is revealed. It turns out all twelve lives—even his original one—were interconnected all along.

En conclusión, Death's Game es una serie excelente que te atrapa de principio a fin. Además de dejar un mensaje poderoso sin caer en lo forzado, te sacará lágrimas —especialmente en el final— y te llevará por una montaña rusa de emociones. Maneja múltiples géneros: hay suspenso, romance, venganza... ¡Es increíble lo bien ejecutado que está todo! No sé si sea 100% fiel al webtoon en el que se basa, pero como producto independiente, funciona a la perfección.

Además, puede servir como introducción ideal para quienes no suelen ver doramas, ya que no es el típico drama romántico de 40 capítulos. Es relativamente corta: solo tiene 8 episodios, aunque algunos son especiales y duran más de una hora (algo común incluso en series occidentales). En fin, la recomiendo al 100%. Mi calificación: un sólido 9.5/10.

In conclusion, Death's Game is an outstanding series that grips you from start to finish. Not only does it deliver a powerful message without feeling heavy-handed, but it will also bring you to tears - particularly in the finale - and take you on an emotional rollercoaster. It masterfully blends multiple genres: suspense, romance, revenge... It's remarkable how well-executed everything is! I can't say if it's 100% faithful to the original webtoon, but as a standalone piece, it works perfectly.

What's more, it serves as an ideal introduction for those who don't typically watch K-dramas, as it's not your typical 40-episode romantic drama. It's relatively short: just 8 episodes in total, though some are specials lasting over an hour (something quite common even in Western series these days). All in all, I'd recommend it 100%. My rating: a solid 9.5/10.
