Today is still a special day to talk about horror movies, and since it's Halloween —at least in my Venezuelan time zone —it's still a day for terror. And I want to take this opportunity to talk to you about this magnificent film. A classic from '97 with Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, and Charlize Theron. Today I'm going to talk to you about The Devil's Advocate. I usually watch some horror movies on this day; I really like this genre, especially those that combine psychological and supernatural horror. And what better example of excellence than this film from the nineties? I'm also a lawyer, and a very good one, so I identify with Keanu's character; I always like to win and be right.
Hoy todavía sigue siendo un día especial para hablar sobre películas de terror y por ser Halloween, al menos, en mi horario venezolano aún sigue siendo esta fecha de terror. Y quiero aprovechar la oportunidad para hablarles de esta película magnífica. Un clásico del 97 con Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves y Charlize Theron. Para este día vengo a hablarles sobre El Abogado del Diablo. Este día suelo ver algunas películas de terror, me gustan mucho las de este género, en especial las que combinan el terror psicológico con el terror sobrenatural. Y qué mejor ejemplo de excelencia que esta película de los años noventa, además también soy abogado y uno muy bueno, por lo que me identifico con el personaje de Keanu, siempre me gusta ganar y tener la razón.
I really like this movie because of Al Pacino's impeccable performance. Who better than him to play the Devil? His acting was so good that even today, his gestures and piercing gaze still terrify me. Keanu Reeves also delivers a memorable performance, playing a talented lawyer driven by his ego and his desire to win and achieve greater success in his career. You could say everything is rosy with his new job, but in this life, we must recognize that everything comes at a price.
Esta película me gusta mucho por la actuación impecable del grande de Al Pacino. ¿Quién mejor que él para interpretar al Diablo? Su actuación fue tan buena que incluso en la actualidad me sigue dando terror con sus gestos y miradas profundas. Por su parte, Keanu Reeves realiza una actuación memorable también, interpretando a un abogado talentoso que se deja llevar por su ego y por sus ganas de ganar y obtener más éxito en su carrera. Se podría decir que todo es color de rosas con su nuevo trabajo pero en esta vida, hay que reconocer que todo tiene un precio.
Charlize Theron is equally compelling. Her character's evolution unfolds majestically. It's through her that we see Keanu's human side; she's the one who keeps him grounded in his spirit and heart. However, he only achieves so much success because this exceptional lawyer, surrounded by overnight success and having his dream opportunity so easily, neglects everything else to hone his career, forgetting love, matters of the heart, and, of course, his beautiful wife.
Charlize Theron tampoco se queda atrás. La evolución de su personaje avanza majestuosamente. Es a través de ella que notamos el lado humano de Keanu, ella es quien lo mantiene en balance con su espíritu y su corazón pero solo logra tener éxito hasta cierto punto porque este abogado especial al verse rodeado de todo ese éxito obtenido de la noche a la mañana literalmente y conseguir la oportunidad de sus sueños tan fácil, deja de lado todo para pulir su camino profesional, olvidando el amor, los problemas del corazón y por supuesto a su hermosa esposa.
I also really like how the religious theme is handled in this film; seeing Al Pacino defying God in his own home is an unforgettable scene. The philosophical themes this character explores also make him iconic and make you reflect on them. It's one of those films that makes you question your faith and the price you'd be willing to pay to make your dreams come true. And despite the film's age and the fact that its special effects are visibly dated, giving it a somewhat strange aesthetic at times, I still think it's worth watching.
El tema religioso también me gusta mucho cómo lo abordan en esta película, ver a Al Pacino desafiando a Dios en su casa es una escena inolvidable. Los temas filosóficos que aborda este personaje también lo vuelven icónico y te hacen reflexionar al respecto. Es una de esas películas que te hace cuestionar tu fe y el precio que estarías dispuesto a pagar para obtener tu sueño hecho realidad. Y a pesar de los años que tiene esta película y que ya sus efectos especiales se notan visiblemente dándole una estética extraña en ciertos momentos, aún así pienso que vale la pena verla a pesar de los años que tiene.
The blend of supernatural and psychological horror is handled excellently throughout the film. Each character stands out thanks to the distinctive performances of these great actors, who I believe marked a turning point in horror cinema. And I dare say, based on my cinephile knowledge, that although the devil had been portrayed before this film's release, the representation of that entity hasn't been as iconic and impactful to transcend time as the performances given by Al Pacino and Peter Stormare in Constantine, both accompanied by the talent of Keanu Reeves.
La mezcla del tema entre lo sobrenatural y el terror psicológico se trabaja de manera exponencial y excelente en toda la película. Cada personaje resalta por la actuación característica de estos grandes actores que pienso que marcaron un antes y un después en las películas de terror. Y me atrevo a decir, de acuerdo a mi conocimiento cinéfilo, que aunque el diablo haya sido interpretado antes del estreno de esta, la representación de dicha entidad no ha sido tan icónica e impactante para trascender en el tiempo como lo fue la actuación brindó tanto Al Pacino y la de Peter Stormare en Constantine, ambos acompañados del talento de Keanu Reeves

¡Feliz Halloween! (aunque en nuestro caso sería "Feliz Navidad" 🥴). Excelente día para hablar de terror. Curiosamente no he visto esta película, pero sí la conozco, obviamente, por el tremendo elenco que tiene. Me dan ganas de verla, la verdad, suena bastante interesante.
