Pointer How The Movie Broker Would've Scored A Ten Out Of Ten 🎥

Now don't get me wrong - going off of my title alone - Broker - a South Korean drama released in June 2022 - was a good movie, with enough character development, some comedic punches subtly interwoven into the serious storyline and the writers succeeding in challenging my belief system.

⚠️ Before we go any further though be warned: this post might contain some spoilers. ⚠️

Without further ado, looking at the above image, one would expect Broker to be a lighthearted film about a family vacation or road trip. It was anything but, as the movie immediately starts off with the heavy theme of a young mother leaving her baby outside a church baby box in the rainy night, with a note stating that she'll come back for him.

Not long after, an even heavier topic rears its head: child/human trafficking. Two men connected to the church, take the baby in and delete the footage from the infant being placed in the baby box and making the argument that the mother was reckless, leaving the note behind without a telephone number. This child would face a hard life and would not be eligible for adoption because of that message.

They keep telling themselves those excuses, even when the mother returns and try to persuade her that the infant is better off being sold to parents who really want a child, but either can't naturally nor through the lengthy and difficult adoption system and she decides to go along with their plan.

It's during their journey through the country together - meeting eligible parents - the adults get to know a bit more about each other and their backgrounds, where my belief system got challenged. Yes the aspect of money is still at the forefront, but the characters aren't inherently evil and have different layers to them, which makes one at the very least understand their perspectives.

Even seeing who the baby ended up with and what happened to some of the characters, rounded off the story in a "righteous" way by finding a "middle ground". The only issue with the movie were some holes in the story: how did the police - who were introduced early on - connect one case to the other? What were the connecting dots? The makers tried to give us some insight into how it happened in the background, but it would've helped either seeing the detectives reporting to their superiors or finding out the real name of the mother.

But like I said, in spite of the holes, the movie kept me hooked from beginning till the end and challenged me into trying to understand why people make wrong decisions. Seen Broker already? Let me know in the comments below if you also have any pointers making this movie better 🤓.
