She Said 🎥 Did Not Expect This Movie To Be So Draining
After having seen the trailer for She Said I knew I wanted to see the movie - whether in a cinema or via streaming - because of the frequently discussed topic in recent times. Also because I was "late" in being informed (only became aware when the case was brought to court) about the allegations against the movie giant Harvey Weinstein and wanted to know more about how and when it all played out. Nothing prepared me though, for what I experienced after seeing the film.
To say the least, the movie depleted my energy levels in spite of having watched it in the early morning and I was left exhausted for the first few hours after. The way in which the storytellers weaved how the main characters - the two investigative reporters who broke the news - hunted for credible sources, dealt with (part of) their personal lives, tried to convince possible informants to come forth and how they negotiated with the team of lawyers was done intricately.
Especially seeing and hearing the women - victimized and silenced by Weinstein and his team - recount what they had endured - both physically and emotionally - and the scars they had to carry with them in silence, because of most having signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), gave insight in what they were going through psychologically. The creators did a fine job in letting us feel how those women were (emotionally) paralyzed and how awful it is to have one's own voice silenced.
Another suspense in the movie, was seeing the main characters feeling unsafe and followed, trying to juggle and deal with their personal lives and also feeling the weight of the stories of the other women and not having the consent to quote the victims, all while hoping that by telling the truth as accurately and objectively as possible preventative actions could be ignited.
The climax finally came when the journalists received fireproof evidence and were permitted to write the story, with Harvey and his lawyers going back and forth and all while writing the story, hearing one of the women reading her story aloud in the background. Fun fact: the voice of the real life person was used reading out her experiences.
