I hope nobody’s judging me for seeing old films when there are newly released ones? It just happened that I want these old films. The old ones are raw and unfiltered with less theatrics and exaggerated soundtracks. Also, I was drawn to this one because it is set out at sea and films like that instantly pull me in. I like the isolation and the feeling that something is bound to go wrong.

Synopsis(possible spoilers)

The film follows Conrad (Jack Laskey), a young British sea captain on his very first command. Already struggling with insecurity and the pressure to prove himself, his situation becomes even more complicated when he discovers a mysterious naked woman hiding close to his ship.

She introduces herself as Li (Zhu Zhu), and claims to be fleeing after causing the death of a man. Instead of turning her in, Conrad makes a risky decision to hide her, setting off a chain of tension, secrecy, and growing intimacy between the two.

As the ship moves through dangerous waters and suspicions begin to rise among the crew, Conrad is forced to confront not just the danger Li brings, but his own fears, desires, and moral boundaries.

My Thoughts

This film felt like I was watching something unfold behind a layer of fog. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was fully into it but then something about the stillness and atmosphere started to pull me in.

This film doesn’t rely on big action or dramatic twists. Instead, it builds its story through intimate moments and tension that feels more internal than external. The ocean setting plays a huge role here as well because it adds to that sense of isolation, like Conrad is completely cut off from the world, making decisions that no one else can really guide him through.

About Conrad and Li’s connection, it actually develops fast. Under normal circumstances, I might have rolled my eyes at that. But here it feels less like a traditional romance and more like two people clinging to each other in a moment of uncertainty. Li is mysterious, almost unreadable at times while Conrad is inexperienced, unsure, but drawn to her in a way he doesn’t fully understand.

Their relationship isn’t built on long conversations or deep backstories; rather, it’s built on circumstance and that’s what makes it interesting, even if it’s not entirely convincing.

What stood out to me is how the film explores stepping into responsibility for the first time, making choices without knowing if they’re right and the blurred line between duty and desire.

Conrad’s decision to protect Li isn’t just about her, but him trying to define the kind of man he wants to be. And that internal conflict carries the film more than the actual plot does.

The story itself isn’t very complex. So if you’re looking for strong twists or a clear, gripping narrative, this might not satisfy you. Also, Li’s character, while intriguing, remains a bit too distant. I wanted to understand her more, but the film keeps her just out of reach.

All in all, this is one of those films that feels more like a mood than a story. It’s restrained and leaves a lot unsaid. For me? I didn’t love it completely, but I appreciated what it was trying to do.
