Netflix Series: Resident Evil

Great addition to the Resident Evil franchise IMHO

I'm going to start this off with, I've never played the Resident Evil video game. With that said, I really can't compare the series to the video game. I did, however, see all the movies. I'm actually a really big fan of the movie franchise. I love Zombie movies and Resident Evil is dystopian zombie horror at its best.

As far as comparing it to the movies, it's the same general plot with a slightly different direction. The basic plot goes like this. An evil corporation releases a deadly virus that turns humans into aggressive zombie-like creatures. It's several years after the deadly virus, there has been a cover-up, and Jade Wesker whose father works for Umbrella Corp. the company responsible for all the misfortune is now trying to uncover the cover-up.

The series has all kinds of twists and turns in the first season of 8 episodes. I binge-watched this over the course of 1 week. It really kept me interested throughout the season. There was never a dull moment.

I would categorize this in the post-apocalyptic dystopian zombie genre. It also has a bit of a cyberpunk feel to it. The series is extremely dystopian, covering topics like gene manipulation, cloning, DNA, mental health, and the evils of greedy corporations.

At times it almost feels like the producers are trying to warn us of our own dystopian future. At the very least you walk away thinking about the implications and ethics of corporate greed a little more. With the exception of the Zombie apocalypse, I don't think we're that far off. Drone attacks on citizens, surveillance, and a small spoiler here... mental health products that make people even crazier if they take too much.

I couldn't help but correlate some of the movie's undertones with current mental health issues happening in my own country. I always look for propaganda in any films I watch. Propaganda might be a harsh term in this case, but there's definitely an underlying message here IMHO.

Surprisingly, it doesn't live up to the level of blood and gore you'd come to expect from a Resident Evil series, but it does have its gross moments. The lack of gore isn't really an issue though. They make up for it with a great plot and storyline.

Some of the plot twists seemed a little predictable to me, but it's the genre. After watching so many of these zombie apocalypse films it's pretty easy to predict what's coming next. At least for me, it is. Still, they manage to sneak in the occasional surprise zinger.

There is no shortage of action or suspense either. The series is well-balanced and entertaining with a few cliffhangers throughout the season.

That's really all I got on this one. The acting is good. Interesting storyline. If Netflix decides on another season, I'll probably tune in. It was just different enough from the movie franchise to keep it interesting and fresh in my opinion.

I love Zombie movies... Got a favorite? Share in the comments, I'm always looking for new zombie flicks to watch!

I'm not into the whole zombie thing. I've got a few shows to watch and will have to see if I find time for this. Netflix seem to be having to fight for viewers and I wonder if they can keep everyone happy.

They have no shortage of content, that's for sure. I've been watching mostly sci-fi, action and horror on there. I can't believe the amount of content I find on that site. I will say that a lot of the content seems geared toward teens and young adults though.

There's some good music documentaries. I have a few lined up to watch.

I love this show! I have a couple of episodes left still before I finish. Of course the main bad chick is like super fucking sexy and evil.

Me too, I thought it was really good. Someone commented on Twitter and said it got terrible reviews. I really enjoyed it.

LOL, yeah she is. She plays the female villain role well.

I avoided this because I am not a fan of the gore and sometimes they use that to cover over poor story telling. Thanks for the review I will give it another look.

There was some gore, but nowhere near the amount of gore I'd come to expect from this franchise. Definitely more story, less blood and gore.

I too enjoyed the series, I played the game though and I like how it has that same puzzle solving element to it. Many actually hate the series, I guess they expected more zombie action but as you said, the plot keeps your attention. I’m still pondering why the big ass gator didn’t rip that girl to threads. The gator 🐊 was epic.

At times it almost feels like the producers are trying to warn us of our own dystopian future.

Yup, that’s how I feel.

Zombie movies, I’m tempted to watch that Korean one on Netflix can’t remember the name though.

Someone on Twitter had mentioned it got terrible ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.

Me too, we'll have to wait and hope for a season 2 to find out.

I've not heard of this, I'll have to look into it thanks.

I've seen all the Resident Evil movies. I like zombie movies in general, but I haven't watched the series yet. I'll try to watch it when I have good time management. I think it will be quite entertaining if a series is made loyal to the film. The Walking Dead was my favourite in the early seasons, but in the following seasons, I quit because the topics covered and the way they reflected to the audience became boring.

I watched almost the entire series with breaks in between. I think I have half of the final season to watch for completion. I'll probably get an AMC streaming service around October to finish the series. I wasn't too impressed with the spin-offs from this series either. I may give them another chance come October.

I thought it was very different from the movies. It takes the series in its own direction for sure. Still has a good plot and storyline though.

Just started watching this. It's a pretty entertaining watch and I'm surprised they were able to come up with a pretty compelling TV series for this zombie video-game story. Makes me wonder if more video-game live-remakes would do better as series than movies.

The last zombie movie I watched was a new Taiwanese one called "The Sadness." It's a bit intense but I was definitely freaked out for most of the film.

I think a series just gives you so many options as far as storyline and character growth.

I'm going to have to look for this one. Thanks.

I haven't played RE games either, but I have seen all the films. When I saw that big multicolored caterpillar in the first episode of this series, it basically ruined a lot of oomph I had in me in regards to what I expected from the whole show. As the series progressed, I came to understand that it's RE for a different generation; I think what we had with first films in the franchise on the turn of the century was far more exciting, innovative, thrilling and suspenseful. The events in the series got closer to that level only in the episode 7, I think where the girls discover what's in the dad's basement.
The acting isn't bad indeed, but so many times I felt like the characters were a bit too shallow for my liking.
