"Have I started losing the vibe to watch movies?" That's the question I asked myself several times last week seeing that I don't watch as many films as I used to in the past. Of course I have not lost the vibe to watch movies. Life has just been getting in the way and it is annoying. Because I don't have a lot of time to see as many movies as I would like to, I try my best to make the hours I have worth it by seeing good films.

This past week, I decided to go search for a movie in one of my older lists and I came across "Beast of No Nation". I have known about this movie for a long time thanks to the famous "I saw terrible things" but had never seen it. It had been recommended to me but, for years, I decided not to see it because I don't like war movies. However, this past week I just came across it again and finally made up my mind to see it. With such a high score from critics and all the positive remarks from people, it should not be a bad movie, right? Let's find out. Shall we?

Vamos a averiguar. ¿Debemos?

The story opens up in a West African country that is in the middle of a war. War ravages the entire country but the effects are mild in a Buffer Zone where a young boy, Agu, lives with his family. The people in the buffer zone don't have the best life but they seem quite content and are obviously in a better situation than what the future holds for them.

It seems life cannot get any harder for the people in the buffer zone until the safety of the land is compromised. Some people escape the former buffer zone while others are killed. Agu manages to escape into the forest where he is temporarily safe from the violence but alone and scared. Eventually, he is captured by rebel forces, initiated and trained to be a killer. Driven by grief and hate, Agu becomes a deadly child soldier seeking revenge for his family. Still, life only gets harder for the young boy and the burdens of war prove heavier than he can carry.

What will become of Agu? Will he get the revenge he craves? Who will survive this war?

My Opinion on Beast of No Nation/My opinion on Beast of No Nation

The entire concept of war is something I really don't understand. So basically, political leaders disagree on something and so because of that disagreement, hundreds or even thousands of people have to go and kill other people that they don't know? I know it's a lot more complex than that but the thought sounds primitive to me. Because I don't understand or agree with the concept, it's easy for (and wrong of) me to just see a war movie as senseless and a waste of time. Still, every genre has good movies and Beast of No Nation is a good movie of the War genre.

Beast of No Nation is not your regular war movie with the generic World War II vibe and an evil German general. Rather, this movie comes down the age ladder to address the issue of child soldiers in Africa. The movie does a great job to portray the effects of war through the eyes of the little boy, Agu. We see Agu go from being a typical child doing child things to a broken child soldier with a lot of trauma and a hunger to kill. He goes through a lot of pain and even more pain as time goes on. That transition is really disturbing if you think about it. It makes you wonder what these kids have to lose and go through before the stop doing kid things and begin to risk their lives in a pointless war.

Agu's psychological transformation was really sad to see. The movie takes us into the mind of the boy so we can get a glimpse of how he copes with the madness around him. Yes we can try to empathize with him but we can never truly understand. Think about it, if mature adults can get their minds messed up in war, what would be the outcome for kids? It was striking for me to see how difficult it proved to help these kids because the helpers could not even fully relate to what they had been through. Some of the kids even rejected the help they were offered because "fighting is what we know".

I cannot talk about Agu without talking about the performance of the young actor Abraham Attah. Apparently, he made his acting debut with his performance in this movie and it's clear that he has some serious talent in the field. It's not every time you get to see a new face on the big screen and they do great. Abraham's depiction of a damaged little boy was priceless. Most of the weight of this story fell on his shoulders and he was able to deliver a grade A performance.

Of course there are supporting roles that made this film so much of a success. My favorite character is Agu's soldier brother, Strika. I really feel like Strika is a highly underrated character in this movie because the film would have been incomplete without him. In the movie, Strika says nothing but his gestures and actions pack a lot of punch. It takes a lot of talent to actually have an emotional impact on the viewers without saying a single word. This exceptional character was played by Emmanuel Nii Adom Quaye who deserves a 5 star rating for his performance.

I cannot mention the cast without talking about Idris Elba. Everyone already knows that Idris Elba is an exceptional actor but he still deserves a mention. It's fascinating for me to see popular actors kinda take on the skin of their characters. Idris did just that in this film with his character, The Commandant, laying down his normal charismatic and awesome personality to become a ruthless and unlikable soldier. Idris was ok and all but sometimes the accent was just funny and off. It's nothing to worry about though because only we native Africans would notice it😅

Despite having kids in the picture, Beast of No Nation spares nothing from the viewer. The movie tries its best to show how ugly war can be for the child soldiers. The violence, death and destruction is just disturbing to say the least. There is some nudity and sexual abuse. As it is in reality, this movie shows us what becomes of these child soldiers. There are scenes of kids smoking heavily and doing drugs. There is also the use of charms (popularly called Juju) that is believed to protect the soldiers during war. To immerse us further into the horror of it all, the colors change several times depending on the intended mood for the moment.

Speaking of detailing, I really like the depiction of a typical African culture. This movie actually offers a blend of several cultures. Names like Agu, Dike and Uche are from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria while the language spoken was probably from a Ghanaian tribe. Every small detail, right down to the sachet water (aka pure water) checked out. What I really liked though was the Pidgin English used. Some people may not understand the conversations in Pidgin English but the language is a common way we communicate in many parts of Africa. It was nice to see that that was included.

The only flaw about this movie is it was not long enough. Ok it isn't a flaw plus the movie was well over two hours long but I wanted more. I was completely hooked that I did not realize that so much time had passed. When it was finally over I really wanted more out of it. Good movies would always have you glued to the screen with their crazy storyline. There are many movies that run for over two hours or even less but you'd just wish they would end already. Beast of No Nation is definitely not that type of movie.

Should you watch Beast of No Nation?/Should you watch Beast of No Nation?

There really isn't a reason why you should not see this film. The story is so sad and yet so good that you would surely stayed glued to your screen. The violence and horror is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

I gotta say, I never thought I would actually like a War movie. Maybe, just maybe, I would give this genre a chance. For Beast of No Nation though, I'll go with a score of 9/10.

Trailer? Sure, I got you covered...

¿Remolque? Claro, te tengo cubierto...

I liked this movie very much. The story is devastating, from the beginning we see this horrible war in which children are used. In Latin America something similar happened in the civil war in El Salvador, children were kidnapped and trained to fight in an absurd war. A very raw film with scenes that shocked me.

The issue of child soldiers is something that needs to be addressed as quick as possible. It’s sad to think that as we sit in the comforts of our homes many kids are out there risking their lives in senseless wars. I like that this film brings this issue to our attention with all its details. The story got me sad and angry at the same time. For sure, it was a film that was put together very well.

Thank you for stopping by!

Although, I really don't like war movies, but this movie is an exception. The movie portrays the evil of war and the dangerous effects it has on people. The movie stirred up a lot of emotions in me as I watched Agu, a playful young boy become a cold blooded killer due to the traumatizing experiences he faced. The movie is actually nice. Thanks for the review👍.

Yes Beast of No Nation is really an exception to other war films. The thought of kids fighting in a war they obviously did not start is sad and annoying. Agu's life was already hard but he had no idea what he was about to face. You'd wonder what it would take for a child to stop doing child things and begin to murder. A sick but interesting story for sure.

Thanks a lot for stopping by!

This movie looks like it's going to be worth it, from the trailer, I feel really moved by the issue of child soldiers; to think that these children are forced into being violent and a totally different version of themselves as a result of a war they most likely wouldn't know anything about...smh. I'd love to watch the movie soon, so I wouldn't just be speaking from snippets(lol). I just hope I wouldn't be mentally disturbed by the explicit contents tho.

For a long time I did not want to see this film because of the entire child soldier issue but right now I'm glad I finally saw it. It's really an eye opener to the situation in many places in the world today. The movie just de vex me as I de watch am.

I just hope I wouldn't be mentally disturbed by the explicit contents tho.

That's a reasonable concern but no you likely will not. Yes I said that they don't spare anything in this movie but it's really not gory. You'll even be hooked on the story. So, go ahead and check it out.

Thanks for reading and for the comment!

You’re welcome, I’d try it out then 🌝
