Decisions, decisions. I really hate trying to decide what to watch. Given my tight schedule, most times I only have the chance to see just one movie in a week and it gets quite difficult to choose what to see. Sometimes I don’t even know if I want to see a movie, start a series or complete a series I started.
So yes, my movie and shows list is a mess and will take some time for me to sort. This week I wasn’t really feeling like seeing something new so I decided to rewatch a movie I saw last year. I was in the mood for a good laugh so from the tons of movies, I picked Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Is the movie still gold compared to the first time I saw it? Let’s find out…

Following the events from “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”, the former Triple A bodyguard, Michael Bryce, is still shaken up by his fall from grace and attends therapy to cope. He decides to go on sabbatical but his vacation is cut short quickly when Sonia Kincaid asks for his help in saving her husband, Darius. Apparently, Darius Kincaid had been abducted by a gang of some sort but if you watched part 1 you’d know that this guy is “unkillable”.
It’s not so much of a spoiler to say that Bryce and Sonia manage to rescue Darius. Simple plot right? Wrong! Because the trio’s actions pull them into a much stickier situation involving very powerful bad people and Interpol. They learn about the plan of some terrorists to destroy Europe’s data grid with a virus and as fate would have it, this unlikely team becomes Europe’s last defense against the bad guys.
Will this crazy trio be able to stop the terrorists? Will Bryce ever get his bodyguard license back?

The first thing I want to say to you awesome readers is that you should never see a sequel before seeing the first movie. I saw this movie last year before I even knew that there was a first movie. As you can imagine, I did not understand some of the references and so the story was not so clear to me. I honestly could not even recall the main plot. After seeing the first movie, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”, earlier this year though, I decided that I’d see the second part again. I finally saw the film again and it started to make more sense than the first time I saw it. So watch the first movie before the sequel!
For those of us that are really into the art of the story and all that good substance, you may find this movie disappointing. This film does not have a unique storyline or anything like that. It’s basically straightforward with a couple of clichés and predictable scenes. In fact, I’m just going to say it; the plot of the film is a terrible mess. The plot development was just poor and annoying. One moment it feels like the film is heading in one direction and the next it steers in another direction without a proper connection.
For me, it felt like they kept trying to force the three protagonists into the middle of the chaos while totally neglecting the other characters. The Interpol guys, for one, were pretty useless and unnecessary in many ways if you ask me. The antagonist was also very non threatening and boring especially given the fact that we did not really get to understand why he was doing bad stuff. Probably the most absurd thing for me was the relationship between Sonia and the bad guy. You need to watch the film to understand how silly these things are and how they destroyed the plot.

This is because I tried my best not to take it too seriously and I would ask anyone that is interested to approach the movie this way. It is an action/comedy film that’s just perfect for when you’ve had a long day.
The action part of the film was ok I guess. It wasn’t so extraordinary but it did the job. The stunts were just a little above average but satisfactory too. What probably made the action good was the color of the film. Because the film has a spy sub genre, it had this light orange or red theme and the occasional ominous blue. The smart use of the right colors for this genre was really good in my opinion.
The main reason I saw this movie was to just relax and laugh a lot and I for sure got my money’s worth. The amazing scripts really provided some much needed chemistry and rapport among the three protagonists. That said, let me mention that “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is not a family movie and should not be watched with Junior in the room. There are vulgar jokes that just come out of nowhere. These jokes may be inappropriate for the kids but they’re just fine for you and me :)

Speaking of chemistry and rapport, the cast for this film’s protagonists were excellent. Their charisma and ability to complement one another were the silver lining in this film’s disaster plot. One character was not complete without the others. Top notch scriptwriting is great but the actors who actually voice out the lines with believable gestures and improvisations are the real heroes.
Ryan Reynolds plays the character of Michael Bryce, the unlicensed bodyguard. I have said in the past that this guy is my favorite actor and he still is hands down. Whenever I see Ryan in a movie I just see him as Ryan and not his character because the guy’s personality radiates in every single movie he stars in. This film is no different. Ryan was as silly as ever and his performance was just a hundred. It really amazes me how this guy can just be effortlessly funny. I really don’t care how low a movie with Ryan is rated because I can bet that I would get to laugh if I watch it.
Samuel L. Jackson plays the part of Darius Kincaid and you can guess that he was perfect for it. I honestly cannot imagine someone crazier that would have done better playing Darius. Samuel Jackson already has that “psychopathic” look that was just right for his character. Of course Darius would not have been complete without Sonia who was played by Salma Hayek. What I can comment on about Salma is the passion she put into her character. I can even still hear Sonia yelling and cussing in Spanish.

I knew I was in for a long ride of laughter as that was exactly what I got. it's one of the best movies of 2021.The cast played their role so well.....though the movie had a lot of tricks on it(well where the fun without tricks?)
