I have had this movie on my mind for a while but I delayed seeing it so I could watch it when the "vibe felt right". There have been a couple of good reviews about The Menu on Hive and beyond, and after reading a good number of them, I knew that I wanted to see this movie when I felt that the time was best. Well, the time was right just recently and I did not hesitate to check out the film.

A couple of "respectable" individuals are invited to Hawthorn, a luxurious restaurant on a private island, for an exclusive food experience. It all starts well with a tour and eventually, the expected culinary experience. Several high end dishes are served in artistic manners as would be expected at such an event. Sadly, unbeknownst to the guests at the restaurant, their sweet experience is about to turn very sour.
The courses on the menu slowly go from normal to absolutely messed up. The guests firstly get slightly taunted before all hell breaks lose. The experience becomes a nightmare as the bloodshed begins. It does not take long for the guests to figure out that their arrival to Hawthorn was not by chance and that escape would cost a finger or two.
How bad could this Menu get? What awful things await the guests of Hawthorn? Who will survive this odd culinary experience?

I consider myself to be a relatively simple person. I Don't own or wear fancy things or try to have really fancy experiences. Maybe this is because I am not rich yet and cannot afford some luxurious stuff but when I see others spend money on luxuries, I just don't get it. Luxurious food experience has to be one of the rich people things that I understand the least. I eat regular foods and I eat a lot but when it comes to a lot of expensive dishes that I have seen, they just look too small to satisfy me. Nonetheless, the always look great even when I don't know what some of them even are. Of course, I know that the goal is not just to fill your stomach but to have the satisfaction of having that experience. This concept is what was used in "The Menu".
I really liked the concept used in this movie. This menu did not just have an arrangement of meals to be served but it was meant to deliver an experience - an experience so grand that it was literally to die for. The story revolved around the carefully planned menu prepared for the guests with most of the action being a part of the show. I loved how everything unfolded around this concept. Eventually we were able to understand why the guests were chosen and the motive of the mastermind. I don't think I have seen a properly put together horror film revolve around this entire food idea. Really, it was not just about the food but the experience which was part of the menu. What a way to tell a story!
The Menu starts like an artistic thriller and really does not scream horror at first. The blue, red and white theme gives it that initial feel of an action or spy movie. This does not ruin the movie instead it makes it a bit more flexible. I would not know if I should classify this film under the horror genre because it does not feel so much like a horror movie. The movie definitely has some really messed up scenes that will shock you but I wouldn't say it is that much of a horror movie. Anyone can watch this film because it does not have so much actual scares. Still, it has some horrific scenes so I understand why it is classified as a horror movie.

I like when movies represent something more than what we see on screen. Some movies don't make so much rational sense but have a deeper message while other movies can make sense but have some other meaning to them. The latter is the case of The Menu where the story goes on in a sensible way but there may just be a different meaning to it. I was able to understand that this movie may be about a problem that artists face. It became clear when the main antagonist categorized the people in the restaurant as "those who give" and "those who take". This probably represented the skillful and talented artists who painstakingly build something that only a few can build but still are not fully appreciated by the consumers. Later on, he would explain that everyone, whether giver or taker, would eventually die but that it mattered what "side" a person chooses. This particular scene reminded me of a Theodore Roosevelt Quote about "the critic and the man in the arena".
This main antagonist is my favorite character in the movie. Chef Julian Slowik is a man forged by several bad circumstances in his life and career. He comes up with the entire concept of the menu explaining how, despite how obviously skilled he is at his craft, it just is never enough to please people. This scary character was brought to life by the performance of Ralph Fiennes. It is already known that this man is a skillful actor that delivers a compelling performance. He definitely makes a great villain as he has proved in countless other projects. It's good to see that he still has what it takes to make an awesome bad guy.
Apart from Ralph Fiennes, this movie's cast was made up of some very popular names in the industry. Of course, we have Anya Taylor-Joy who plays as the main protagonist, Margot Mills, and gives us quite the performance. Another character that I really liked was Tyler despite how obnoxious he was. Tyler is a lover of the food art and wannabe food critic who seems oblivious of the awful things happening right in front if him. I cannot say much about this character without spoiling the movie but he is basically obsessed with his passion and that gets the best of him. This character was skillfully played by Nicholas Hoult.
Other actors in the movie did really good. The script was really good but I was highly impressed when I heard that many lines were improvised by the actors themselves. This is why it is important to carefully select the right cast when making a movie. These actors were able to come up with their own lines and still seem very natural. The improvisation done by the actors in this film are not obvious. It seems like everything was scripted. I love that!

The Menu is a movie that starts exciting and ends just well. I would recommend this movie to anyone because it was definitely worth the one hour and 47 minutes that I dedicated to see it. I give it a score of 9/10.

A fabulous satire, I loved the movie, The Chef and Margot, I loved those characters. A satire that can serve as an analogy for other industries or even society itself. Good movie.
Satire is the word. The story really pointed out some important truths about society. Sadly or not, it's in our nature to criticize. Maybe the delivery of criticism is what we need to work on as a society.
Definitely a good movie with a wonderful story. The characters were well put together.
