Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past two months, you must have heard about or even seen the incredibly popular Netflix series, Wednesday. This series has been talked about a lot and criticized even in this community. I have known about the series long before it was even released but I have been skeptical about it. These days, I find it difficult to watch a series that just has one season due to the fear that it may get cancelled as has been the trend recently. However, after I saw a post comparing Wednesday to The Boys, I decided that I was going to check it out.
The first season of Wednesday consists of eight(8) episodes each being about 50 minutes long. I have seen it all to know if all the hype was necessary. Well, let’s find out…

Wednesday Addams is a peculiar girl in her normal school. After a really unfortunate incident, she is expelled from the school and is enrolled by her parents into Nevermore - a school for “outcasts” just like her. The Addams Family is quite an interesting franchise to say the least. Admittedly, I have just seen a few animations about this odd family so I wouldn’t really say that I am a fan or anything like that. However, after seeing Wednesday, I have become a little bit more interested. This isn’t because the series was profoundly good but mostly because of the dark theme of the franchise. Any horror fan would be interested in this just as I am.
Speaking of Horror, a quick google search would show that this is the genre that Wednesday tries to present to us. When I confirmed that it was a horror series, I just could not pass up the opportunity to see it. Well, despite the brilliant dark theme of the story of the girl who is allegedly “allergic to color”, Wednesday fails to deliver on its promise to be horror filled. While watching it I just could not help but compare it to The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which, although was a flop in my opinion, managed to scare me during the first two seasons.
Wednesday does not immediately start off as a series that is worthwhile. The first episode is a little bit disappointing in my opinion. Initially, the idea of a mysterious monster causing havoc in their town was intriguing but when this monster was shown right in the first episode, we were just presented with some low quality CGI and a very questionable slaughter scene. This immediately brings my expectations for some quality horror to very low levels. I considered quitting the series right there and then but I just hoped it would get better and kept watching. Maybe, just maybe, Wednesday would get that scare boost it so desperately needs in the next season.

The first season is not all bad actually. Of course, if it was so bad I would not have been able to finish it. There was a reason I was always coming back to see the next episode. Perhaps it was the mystery of the monster and Wednesday’s connection to the strange occurrences. Sure the mystery kept me watching but I wouldn’t say it was that good. The focus was on a single theory which was obviously false. There were really no reasons to have other theories so we were mostly made to guess. In the end, I was able to guess the right culprits before they were revealed.
Perhaps another reason I kept coming back to this show was the “charismatic” protagonist. Charismatic is obviously sarcastic but Wednesday was indeed a well put together protagonist. Wednesday is not your typical weirdo. It’s not just her style that makes her unique but her personality as well. The things she said never ceased to amaze me and the boldness with which she says them while defying every authority was just mind blowing. This series is supposed to be a comedic one but it’s just Wednesday herself that makes me laugh a couple of times.
The scripts for the Wednesday character were good and her costume was on point but we cannot just leave out the actress herself. Jenna Ortega is the crucial piece for this amazing character. Her exceptional performance in this show makes you realize more why she is a gem in the industry. I have seen Ortega perform in a couple of projects but not as a character as cold as Wednesday. Her growth and maturity is clear as she takes on the main role in this show. That is quite the responsibility but she seems to handle it properly. It’s great to see actors easily become their characters.

Our protagonist was a decent character but the other ones were not as amazing as I hoped. Some were great but most of the supporting characters were lacking in many ways. Enid is another character I did not like so much. The problem here was the actress who just was not fit the role in my opinion. Her performance felt forced in many ways.

It’s really hard not to cringe when these characters interact. In many cases, I felt like I was just watching another high school series or something from the old Disney days. I don’t know how many times I rolled my eyes at the awkwardness of the scripting and “chemistry”.
I’ve said a couple of negative things about this series but I want to end on a positive note. Speaking of notes, let’s talk about the music. Well, the theme song for Wednesday is actually not bad at all. It does not just match the overall theme but is a bit catchy at least for a former music nerd like me.

The target audience for this series is today's teenagers. Many of us watched it out of nostalgia to see something of Tim Burton's Adams family again. I didn't think I would like it, because I'm not a teenager, but I ended up liking it, I found it entertaining.
