Movie Review: Class (2010)
Although it is about a love story, there are deeper messages that this movie attempts to get across to viewers.
What is lawful and what is not?
What is fair, and what is unfair in society, in personal life, and at work?
Is the role of academic institutions to provide challenging training and education to law graduates to take society’s interest into account first, or produce tomorrow’s legal professionals who are ignorant and indifferent to public interest law and only want to get paid fat fees?
Characters
Kylie
Kylie is a young woman with a straightforward, spontaneous, and honest character.
She is a single mother with a little boy suffering from asthma attacks, and she always has to keep an eye on him.
This causes problems to her work, as she needs to take days off regularly to take her son to hospitals and other health professionals.
Being a single mother means that she has to make up for an absent father, which is not easy.
How can you explain to a little boy why his father is not there when most needed, and whether he loves him or not?
Kylie does her best to raise a good boy and provide him a clean and warm home where he feels loved and special.
She tries not to let his father’s absence affect his growing up as a normal child.
Whit
Whit is a typical case of a son who struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.
Shane
Shane is an adorable child who unfortunately suffers from asthma.
He follows his mother’s instructions and advice without complaint, thus trying not to make her life harder than it actually is.
He depends fully on her support.
In Whit’s figure he finds a substitute for the absent father that he never had.
Businesses don’t care about your personal life and problems
Kylie keeps getting fired by bosses who seem to be totally unsympathetic to her problems.
Even when trying to get a new job with Whit’s help, her resume can’t convince her interviewers and prospective employers that she is actually fit for the job.
The role of public services for the disadvantaged
Those not lucky enough to have been born into a wealthy family have a really hard time working out solutions to their problems through public services offering help.
Support from family and friends
Getting help and support from a family member is really crucial to survive under difficult circumstances in life.
It could be a brother, a good friend, or a neighbor.
In this case, it is Kylie’s sister, Jen, who gives all the support that she can, otherwise I don’t think Kylie would be able to handle all by herself.
