[Movie] Tightrope-Review

Clint Eastwood is a police detective that finds himself walking on a tightrope.

In fact, it is a red ribbon that a serial killer uses to strangle his victims.

In-between two worlds

Wes Block (Clint Eastwood) is a divorced police detective who lives with his two young kids.

While on duty, he has to deal with underworld figures on a regular basis.

Mixing with those people involves the risk of becoming one of them at the end, without even realizing it.

He enforces the law, but he is not above the law himself.

How can he justify those dealings to his young children who have already started asking him about things?

Creeping corruption

Corruption is a problem in the police force, and it takes a strong character to stay unaffected when faced with temptations on duty every day, or to be more precise, every night.

Alright, a policeman is a human being with weaknesses, but unless he can fight those weaknesses, how can he enforce the law on other people who are supposed to violate it?

Dealing with revenge

Police officers often face the risk of people who want to take revenge on them.

This could be because they have sent those people to jail in the past, and bad feelings can lurk for years.

When the opportunity arises, crooks won’t miss it, and revenge is a dish best served cold, as the saying goes.

It is a popular theme in movies, and it has been used by many screenwriters.

What makes this theme unique is an element of surprise and mystery.

This lack of evidence and motivations heightens the mystery and is what captivates the viewers’ attention.

The train scene

The final train scene, where Wes Block finishes the serial killer, reminds me of similar scenes in western films.

The only thing missing is gunfire exchanged between bandits and law enforcers.

Otherwise, train movement creates an ideal setting for unpredictable situations, where a hunter and his prey can change roles in an instant, and events can take an unforeseen turn.

Forensic pathology and crime investigation

In this movie, the role of a forensic pathologist in assisting crime investigation is valuable, to say the least.

Without precious help from a knowledgeable forensic pathologist, our police detective would not be able to go very far to shedding light on the conditions of death of the killer’s victims.

It’s those unnoticed details that only an experienced and trained eye can trace, which make a difference, when it comes solving a crime.

I guess movies like this one have contributed a lot to motivating young people to follow a career in forensics.

The right woman at the right time

There comes a time in a man’s life when the right woman appears to make his life meaningful again.

Beryl Thibodeaux, played by Geneviève Bujold, is not interested in a short-term relationship.

If she was, she would have already found one or more partners to fill a gap in her life.

She can offer Wes Block the emotional stability and support that he is actually, and unknowingly, looking for.

She can’t do it only for him, but for his kids, as well, which is perhaps what matters to him most.

In this way, she acts like a deus ex machina to provide a solution that resembles a happy ending.
