[Oscars]
The Oscar nominations have been announced. I wanted to say I haven't been this interested in the awards show in a few years, but that would be a lie. However, aside from the competition for Best Female Oscar (the fight between Killers of the Flower Moon vs. Poor Things), that's exactly what it is. I haven't seen K-Pop DH yet, but it's winter, so there will be at least a few opportunities to watch a good animated film. It's a shame Demon Slayer or Chainsaw Man didn't get nominated. Not that I'm a fan of Demon Slayer, but this anime helped strengthen the anime's standing. Timothée Chalamet supposedly has an even better role than Paul Atreides in Dune. It's hard for me to imagine, because he was truly convincing as a religious Messiah. And apparently, it's a clear-cut role—he plays a self-righteous jerk. Apparently, not since Marlon Brando has a young actor received three nominations in a single season. The same goes for Emma Stone, who garnered a whopping seven nominations. She was also compared to the great actress Meryl Streep.
This is also an exceptionally successful ceremony for Warner Brothers. Despite the missteps with One Battle After Another, 2025 was an exceptionally successful year for the studio. I still haven't finished the film, but the Oscars will definitely motivate me to do so. The same goes for Sinners, which I've also heard mixed reviews about. Overall, it's a good to okay film; some people rave about it, but a significant number of people say it was okay, but nothing too extreme. I wonder if any studio has ever had more nominations. I haven't made my predictions yet, but I'll post them later.

[Comment on film length]
To be honest, I agree with this woman 120%!!! Shortening a film like this, provided the script is solidly written (and directed equally), probably almost always improves its reception. People want longer productions because "it's more interesting content." I thought that myself for many years, but the British are right. Just like the budget, there shouldn't be too much material. It's worth creating more content, but then almost everything gets cut if it's unnecessary or doesn't lead anywhere. Believe me, the viewer gains nothing from it, and many scripts can be wrapped up in two hours. Story is king, as Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski says. Many films could easily be shortened by 10 or 15 minutes, and some by 20 or even 30. We don't have as much time as we used to. We need to know more than our parents, which also takes time and the will to live. And I'm not even mentioning such trivial things as Avatar. I bet they could cut an hour of unnecessary plot from the third installment, and it would only get better.

When writing about this film, I didn't expect to see Polish names among the filmmakers. Suicide Room is a brilliant film, albeit with a few flaws. It also takes a rather literal approach to certain issues that normal people can't fathom (even though it's quite common and many people prefer to deceive themselves otherwise). Dead bedrooms, mutual accusations, a toxic atmosphere, a lack of love, raising a disturbed child or a child with a personality disorder—it's a disgrace to many parents. Nevertheless, I always prefer established filmmakers who sometimes overdo it (even if they really do, like Komasa, who turns the Warsaw Uprising into a nonsense romance) to cowardly, safe filmmakers. They create boring, uninteresting stories.

Glen Powell's new film will be released in theaters on February 5th. Cristin Milioti, the arch-fucking star of The Penguin, will star in the film. If you want to see a stunningly badass female lead, watch The Penguin. You'll thank me later. Glen's film may be a complete mess (and a dirty one at that!), but I'll watch it for Cristin. What she did in the series is... simply wow. I'd love to see her in a comedy. A young actress known from the Netflix series has also joined the cast.

Poznaliśmy listę nominacji do Oscarów. Chciałem powiedzieć, że od kilku lat nie byłem tak zainteresowany galą, ale skłamałbym. Niemniej pomijając rywalizację o najlepszy Oscar dla kobiety (walka między Killers of the Flower Moon vs Poor Things), to tak właśnie jest. KPop DH jeszcze nie widziałem, ale mamy zimę, więc okazji do obejrzenia fajnego filmu animowanego będzie co najmniej kilka. Szkoda, że Demon Slayer lub Chainsaw Man nie dostały nominacji. Nie żebym był fanem Demon Slayer, ale to anime pomogło wzmocnić pozycję anime. Timothée Chalamet podobno ma jeszcze lepszą rolę niż Paul Atryda z Dune. Trudno mi to sobie wyobrazić, bo wypadł naprawdę przekonywująco jako religijny Mesjasz. No i podobno jest to jednoznaczna rola - gra zadufanego w sobie dupka. Nadal nie skończyłem tego filmu, ale Oscary mnie do tego na pewno zmotywują. Podobnie z Sinners, o którym również słyszałem różne opinie. Generalnie to dobry lub niezły film, niektórzy się zachwycają, ale nie mała grupa ludzi mówi, że było OK, ale bez przesady. Ciekawe, czy jakieś studio miało kiedyś więcej nominacji. Jeszcze się nie bawię w swoje predykcje, ale umieszczę je za jakiś czas.

Jeśli mam być szczery, zgadzam się z tą panią w 120%!!! Takie skracanie filmu, o ile scenariusz został solidnie napisany (+ tak samo wyreżyserowany), prawdopodobnie niemal zawsze poprawia jego odbiór. Ludzie chcieliby dłuższe produkcje, bo "to więcej ciekawego contentu". Sam tak przez wiele lat myślałem, ale Brytyjczycy mają rację. Materiału, podobnie jak pieniędzy w budżecie, nie powinno być za dużo. Warto zrobić więcej contentu, ale potem i tak niemal wszystko jest ścinane, gdy jest zbędne lub do niczego nie prowadzi. Uwierzcie mi, widz nic na tym nie zyskuje i wiele scenariuszy można zamknąć w 2 godziny. Historia jest królową, jak mówi Polski pisarz Andrzej Sapkowski. Wiele filmów można na luzie skrócić o 10, 15 minut, a niektóre o 20, czy nawet 30. Nie mamy tyle czasu co dawniej. Ba, musimy wiedzieć więcej niż nasi rodzice, co też zabiera trochę czasu i chęci do życia. A o takich krowach jak Avatar nie wspominam. Stawiam, że z 3 części będzie można wyciąć godzinę zbędnych wątków i będzie tylko lepiej.

Pisząc o tym filmie, nie spodziewałem się, że przeczytam wśród nazwisk twórców polskie nazwiska. Sala Samobójców to genialny film, aczkolwiek posiadający trochę błędów. No i zbyt dosłownie pokazuje pewne problemy, które normalnym ludziom nie mieszczą się w głowie (mimo że jest dość powszechny i wielu ludzi woli się oszukiwać, że jest inaczej. Dead bedrooms, wzajemne oskarżenia, toksyczna atmosfera, brak miłości, wychowywanie zaburzonego dziecka lub wyróżniającego się dziecka, to ujma na honorze wielu rodziców). Niemniej zawsze wolę konkretnych twórców, którzy czasem przeszarżują (nawet jeśli naprawdę przesadzą, jak Komasa robiący z Powstania Warszawskiego bzdurny romans) niż jakiś tchórzliwych, bezpiecznych twórców. Oni tworzą nudną berbeluchę, a nie ciekawe opowieści.
