Pavane (Movie Review)

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Lately, I've been rewatching films that have been on my list for a long time. Two of them are Pavane and Once We Were Us from South Korea. Of course, both are romantic stories. If you don't know anything about Pavane, I've only heard rumours that it has a sad ending, but I already know the plot of Once We Were Us because it's a remake of a Chinese film called Us and Them. Today, I'm going to discuss Pavane first.

PAVANE

The story begins with a parking attendant at a mall named Par Yo-han (Byun Yo-han), who is actually the son of a chaebol or conglomerate, and his encounter with a young man named Lee Gyeong-rok (Moon Sang-min), who has lost interest in life after the people he loved left him. Gyeong-Rok's father chose a different life after succeeding in his career as an actor, while his mother died after experiencing betrayal in love and a life of suffering. The opening line of the film is: LOVE IS JUST AN ILLUSION. That is what Gyeong-Rok comes to believe.

Until he joined as a part-time parking attendant and met Yo-Han and a basement girl named Kim Mi-Jeong (Ko Ah Sung). Mi Jeong is not beautiful, even falling below Korean beauty standards. She is intimidated even though she is a permanent employee. Her job duties kept changing until she ended up in the basement, fulfilling requests for items or stock.

For the first time, Gyeong-Rok felt attracted, curious, and wanted to get to know this ugly girl better. However, it wasn't easy. Gyeong-Rok didn't have enough courage, and Mi-Jeong kept avoiding him. This is where Yo-Han's role comes in. Yoo-Han, who is writing a novel, is very interested in the dynamics between his friendship with Gyeong-Rok and the unique love story between Gyeong-Rok and Mi-Jeong. He becomes a matchmaker who tries to bring together the love story of the handsome young man and the basement girl.

Encounters, the dynamics of friendship and romance, and even death will always be a part of our lives, as well as in the film Pavane. Everything is presented in a simple but meaningful way. How love and friendship develop and how death ultimately separates one of the stories.

CHARACTERS

  • Park Yo-Han (Byun Yo-han)

The fun fact is that he is a character who seems very honest and pleasant, but he is actually the most depressed about his own life. He is the son of a company owner but prefers to be a parking attendant or go undercover so he can choose who his friends will be. And he, who once went through a difficult phase of attempting suicide, finally has Lee Gyeong-Rok and Kim Mi-Jeong as his friends.

  • Lee Gyeong-Rok (Moon Sang-Min)

Starting out and growing up with deep trauma from loss and pessimism about the future, Gyeong-Rok lived day after day without feeling anything, until fate brought him to the woman of his dreams. He is a character who gradually rises up and tries to believe again in love and the illusions between them.

  • Kim Mi-Jeong (Ko Ah-Sung)

What is it like to be an ugly girl who is socially excluded? Especially amid inhuman beauty standards? Of course, Mi Jeong just needs to live under the radar so she doesn't get the public's sentiment. She grew up hiding and trying to live quietly. She was insecure and felt insignificant. Until fate brought her to someone who loved her—none other than Lee Gyeong-Rok.

SUMMARY

If you're feeling insecure, if your life is in a state of uncertainty, and perhaps you need a dose of sweet love, Pavane is a must-watch to fill the void of your overwhelming emotions. Enjoy the show.
