Movie review; After School
Happy Sunday evening! I just watched this interesting movie, a Nigeria Hollywood movie by Ruth Kadiri, the producer of After School. However, I think the title is supposed to be "While in School" by the end of the review you will know while I say they.
The movie is about a rich man's daughter named Joan, who is a bully. They have a maid, and the maid also has a daughter named Mimi. The maid and her daughter Mimi live with them, and they are nice to them; they even sponsor Mimi's education. But Joan hates Mimi because her mother always compares her to Mimi, saying that Mimi is beautiful, intelligent, slim, and always gets awards, while her daughter has never gotten any. This makes Joan cry a lot, and because of that, she treats Mimi badly. In school, she is also a bully and has a crush on a boy named Alex.
Later, the school Mimi attends is not able to register their students for WASC because they didn't meet the WASC requirements. Mr. Koko, the rich man, has to change her school to his daughter's school. This makes Joan angry, and she becomes even more resentful. When Mimi gets to her school, she always answers questions correctly because she is brilliant, and she gets along with Alex, which makes Joan hate her even more. Joan lies against Mimi so that her parents can take her to another school, but it doesn't work.
Later, Joan plans Mimi's kidnapping with the gateman. Mimi is kidnapped, and they involve the police. The secret is eventually exposed, revealing that Joan was behind it. She starts crying and says it's her mother's fault, claiming that her mother always makes her feel less of herself. She says she hated herself because her mom always complains that she eats too much and is not slim like Mimi. She confesses that her mother's constant comparisons made her feel unloved.
The movie is a lesson for mothers who always compare their children to someone else. Every child is beautiful and intelligent in their own way. No child should be compared to another. If a child will be a good girl, it starts from home. Joan wasn't properly loved at home, and that's why she became a bully at school. Every mother should love their children as they are and correct them with love when they're doing something wrong.
I rate the movie 8/10 because of the title; the title is supposed to be "While in School" because all the scenes are still in school.
