Fright Night Classic 80s Horror Movie Getting Fan Release on Atari 2600
Look, I am a big fan of Fright Night, the original, not the remake (which was decent) or the sequel (that was literally a genderswapper retelling of the original). I wanted to get that out up front because that obviously skews my view on this fan port. The Atari 2600 is the only console that will have a game based on Fright Night, that I know of (if there are others, please let me know, I would love to check them out).
Picking Scenes is Important
Obviously, the Atari 2600 is not powerful enough to do a lot with graphics. This means being creative and picking apart the source material for key scenes/parts that can be included in the game.
Atariage forum member, alfredtdk has been able to create a reasonable recreation of the movie poster for the title screen.
There is only one scene so far in Frigh_Night_v0.4.bas.bin which is the classic staircase with stained glass window in the background. This was an iconic scene for me because so much of the movie advanced here.
The developer mentions intent to include more scenes as their port of Fright Night continues in development.
Picking a Genre That Works with the Hardware
So far, Fright Night is giving a bit of Space Invaders as you control either Charley or Peter in their quest to stop Jerry Dandridge. You are armed with, presumably, wooden stakes of some kind and are shooting up the stairs at the enemy.
Considering the only enemy available right now randomly changes into a bat, I must assume that it is Jerry Dandridge.
He is quick moving in both human and bat form, so you are going to have to lead your shots a bit. Or be incredibly lucky.
Follow along in the development on the AtariAge forums, sign up and let the developer know what you think. There are tons of great, interesting, games in development over there.
