The Worse Cancellation I've Seen: Dark Matter

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

I saw The Rookie, and that led me to Melissa O'neil. I decided to go check other shows she'd done and I found that her first one was Dark Matter, which is a spaceship show with androids, clones, drama, memory lost, and more things that I like to see.

Bad guys that are not completely dark and good guys that are not that good. I love seeing that range of emotions, and characters that look like that, characters, I hate realism in tv, because I have a lot of realism in my life, I want to see problems I won't have ever and sure secretly being an android is not a problem I would ever have.

This is a rather older show, and I will spoiler you because it got cancelled after season 3 and it was left in the most horrible cliffhanger! So many awesome storylines, and so many answers to questions from season one. I was sad that it was cancelled and mad at myself for not doing my research before watching the show... but well, it was really nice while it lasted, so, here is my review.

It's a crew of six people, four men, two girls, one underage so it just leave one available for romance... it gets complicated, it doesn't mess up with the rest of the show but I knew since I saw them waking up on their pods that it would be a problem.

The crew doesn't have names, not at the beginning, the whole plot starts with them waking up with the memories wiped out, their names are just numbers from one to six, in the order they woke up. They have no idea who they are or why they are in the ship, they had a fight but also decided to trust each other, assuming they are a team.

Well, the crew is actually 7 with the android. I love the android's humor haha is so deadpan but funny. That thing keeps being deactivated so often, it's be tased so mane times, they should put a system to alert the crew when she passes out. It takes them by surprise every time, but I guess they don't expect it to happen so often because they are alone in a spaceship traveling at light speed. The android is played by Zoey Palmer and my gadh!, she does an amazing job.

Melissa O'neil plays Two, she becomes the badass captain of the ship. It made sense because as soon as she stood in front of the controls she knew what to do. Nobody else knew so they just let her. Everyone learned in due time what their role was, kinda, at least a rough idea, since their instincts kicked in and they started to do things like use guns or pilot the shuttle.

My least favorite character was One (Marc Bendavid), it ended up being a weird character because beside not remembering who he is, he is not who they think he is once they discover the file with their names. He stole another guys face to infiltrate the ship. He was so needy and wanted to be good but in a way that put everyone in danger, he always felt like morally superior to the others, I didn't like him. Also, he liked Two, and she kinda liked him back but it was too complicated to involve feelings, so she hooked up with Three instead.

One and Two end up together at some point, when Two decided complicated wasn't that bad (and Three rejected her last approach after she got bitten by a zombie lol) but it got weird because he wasn't able to separate the time in their quarters, with crew and work time, he wanted it to be romantic and they couldn't actually afford that at the moment. He was too pushy so I didn't like him. He dies on season two.

Three (Anthony Lemke) is a tricky one, you see him and you would think he is the worse one, and if a treason were to come he is the suspect number one, but no, he is not good but also not a monster, in fact he and Five are the ones Two can trust the most. Three is a gun guy, just the same way Two knew her thing was operating The Raza, the ship, his thing were the guns. He is reasonable within their reality, not good, not bad, I think that they would have been in way less problems if they listen to him more. Of course many people would have died, but not them.

Four (Roger Cross) is quiet, he is always practicing with swords. He is different to the others, like he is always looking for something else, he wants to know who he is, and he has something that he know has a deep meaning but he doesn't know what it is. He ended up being the heir to an empire, but he was framed for the murder of his father and his step brother is the emperor now. He wants to recover the throne, he though he murdered the emperor because he doesn't have memories about it, but with the help of Five he learns that he had to escape the empire to survive.

He is the only one of the crew that decided to recover his memories once they discover that it is possible for some of them. It changed him, he was now a mix of who he was and who he had become, and he decided to recover the throne, betraying the crew once he decided he needed to own something The Raza had.

I love Five, played by Jodelle Ferland, she's the child of the crew, she wasn't even supposed to be there, she's a stowaway. But they don't know that right away, what they learn is that she is great with tech so she is helpful. When they discover a file with all of their identities, hers isn't there, so they now know that one is called Jace Corso, Two is Portia Lin, Three is Marcus Boom, Four is Ryo Testuda, Six is Griffin Jones... of course, we later discover that those aren't their real names either.

Jace is actually a guy called Derrick Moss impersonating Jace, a high level criminal. Portia is actually called Rebecca, Ryo Tetsuda is called Ryo Ishida, and Griffin is Kal Varrick, and he is also not supposed to be there, he is an undercover cop from the Galactic Authority. They are trying capture the crew of The Raza.

Six has a weird journey because first they don't know who they are, then they learn they are supposed to be mercenaries, then he discover the crimen he committed was because of someone else betrayed him, then he learns he is actually a cop and he was undercover in that mission, also undercover in the raza, he betrays the crew and hands them to the Galactic Authority, and then he learns that crime he learned about, where 10k people died, wasn't just someone betraying him, he knew that would happen and he did it anyway because that was his dutty, but went crazy and killed the other criminals at the end.

Those are the main characters, there is more but this is already a lot of text.

They are a crew of mercenaries, despite all their identity changes, they are still employed, and it´s weird for them because they don't remember who they are, but the world remember and treats them as such. They take jobs, mess them up, get money from random activities, sells, stealing, finding their own stash, etc.

One of the things we learn that was not in Portia's file is that she is not a regular human. She was spaced out of the ship and she was supposed to be dead real fast, but just as she recovered from a zombie bite, she ended up not dying. She didn't know how, she just grabbed something and waited to die but she did't, she managed to cause some damage to force the people invading the ship to go outside, and that's how she got back in. Turns out she's manufactured superhuman, with nanobots or nanites inside of her that protect her and heal her fast.

They found out after scanning her to see how did she survive. So she's manufactured but she has a mind and feelings of her own, and she wasn't the criminal murderer Portia Lin, she was a tortured girl, the scientists that created her tested her limits hurting and cutting her in so many ways, until she escaped killing almos everyone. She wasn't bad really... later we discover that a woman called Irena created her, and was pushed out of the project when she saw the humanity in Rebecca, and Irena was the one tampering with the security protocols to let Rebecca escape.

They were in a relationship, it flourished when they were working in a lab creating programs to give androids the option to choose for themselves, turning the place into a sanctuary for those androids.

But Irena got sick, Rebecca couldn't save her, so she put her it in stasis to keep her alive until she could find a way to cure her.

Turns out the android was made to be Irena's body but she didn't go with it at the end because it felt like playing god, so she kept the android as its own being when she left the sanctuary.

This is not Two and Android, this is Rebecca and Irena!

Since Ryo was the only one with memories he wanted to get the crew to give him something by sharing what he knew about them... at the end the crew win and is about to kill him, but he shares with Two that she has a child she made with her DNA and Irena's DNA.

And then the freaking show was cancelled and we will never know if this kid really exist, where she is, why was she created... and Two's body was possessed by some interdimensional alien at the end of the season... which we also won't ever see how it is resolved.

I know this post is really random but I'm ranting about my favorite parts which are the ones involving Two / Portia Lin / Rebecca, and how mad I am about shows being cancelled with so many open plots. Same thing happened with Legends of Tomorrow, which as also a space travel / time travel / spaceship show.

The show is really cool, if you don't care it was cancelled and would be happy reading or writing fan-fictions about what happens after, I do recommend the show, and the panels and interviews, Melissa O'Neil and Zoie Palmer are really funny!

Btw, they lost their memory because Five, or Emily Kolburn which is her real name, listened to Portia and Marcus plan the death of Kal since they discovered he was an undercover cop. The idea was to mess up the stasis pods and delete just their memories about discovering the cop, but the code was not good enough, so she ended up deleting everyone's memories. The android woke up in a defense protocol and they had to fight it, and Two had to reboot it so even the Android forgot about everything.

Hope you liked it, until the next time

Thanks for reading
