The Tumbler

My favourite vehicle from a movie is the Tumbler driven by Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. The first time I saw the Tumbler was in the movie, Batman Begins. It was completely different from other vehicles I had seen Batman drive in previous movies.

I was impressed by the design of the Tumbler the first time I saw it. It looked like a mini armoured tank in the shape of a muscular crab to me. The front part of the Tumbler looks intimidating and powerful. It has a windscreen that looks like two trapeziums separated by an armoured plate in the middle. The Tumbler as a superhero's vehicle is also equipped with sophisticated electro-mechanical technology and weapons like cannons in its front part for self-defence and attack against villains and opponents. Two large sports-like tyres make up its front wheels making it look fierce in my opinion. A jet engine and four swamper tyres power the Tumbler at its rear and enable it to make quick upward jumps as Batman did in some scenes of the movies when necessary.
The Tumbler has the qualities of being sturdy, powerful, armed, fast, and easy to maneuver.

The history of the Tumbler is a deviation from other vehicles driven by Batman in the past. It was designed and built as a prototype of an armoured vehicle carrier by the Research and Development department of Wayne Enterprises, Bruce Wayne's (Batman) family Company. Unlike previous movies, It was not made by Batman! It is also the first vehicle driven by Batman that is not called the Batmobile, the name Batman's vehicle is famously known by.

I like the Tumbler because of the qualities it embodies and feels it complements the personality of its driver. It looks powerful and mysterious like Batman. There are several scenes the Tumbler appeared in the Dark Knight, the second installment of the Dark Knight trilogy, that were fascinating to me. One of them was when a group of criminals were trying to carry out a deal with Scarecrow, a protagonist, and were attacked by men who disguised as Batman. The criminals fought back and tried to escape when the Tumbler made its way to the scene by climbing over a concrete barrier and car in the parking lot. Batman who was not driving the vehicle then had set the Tumbler on auto-drive before it got to the scene. He also programmed the Tumbler to make "intimidating" cannon shots at targets close to where the criminals were to scare them. Scarecrow who had initially dismissed the men disguised as Batman as imposters acknowledged the presence of the 'real' Batman when the Tumbler made its entrance to the scene.

Another scene I also liked in the movie was when the Joker, the villain of the movie, tried to capture Harvey Dent, the District Attorney of Gotham when he was being conveyed in a Police van. Joker using an articulated truck had succeeded in separating some of the escort vehicles attached to Harvey Dent earlier thereby weakening the protection Dent had. He pursued Dent's vehicle and shot at it with different types of guns that could not penetrate it because it was bulletproof. Joker realised he needed a more powerful weapon to attack Dent's vehicle and shot a bazooka at it. Batman who was behind and driving fast to catch up with Dent's vehicle intercepted the bazooka shot by the Joker by boosting the Tumbler's jet engine and making a sprinted jump to shield Dent's vehicle. The Tumbler before intercepting the bazooka shot had earlier rammed into a Refuse Disposal truck that was much bigger than it without being damaged. However, the Tumbler was badly damaged by the bazooka after impact. It split its front part and ejected Batman on the Batpod (a powerful motorcycle-like vehicle) before it self-destructed. A proof of the sophisticated design of the Tumbler.

The Tumbler is my favourite movie vehicle because of its build, performance, and utility. It is a vehicle worthy of a superhero and people aspiring to greatness!

Thanks for reading,
Have a splendid day folks.
