Police mysteries have a level of magnetism that no one can resist, or are you able to elude them? A murder case, a robbery, an illegal fraud, we are all curious about those kinds of enigmas. Agatha Christie was a great developer of the genre, with more than 60 novels written, several dedicated to the romantic genre, and 14 stories with the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. She was also a great playwright specializing in theater, with two outstanding plays which were "The Mousetrap" and "Witness for the Prosecution".

On this occasion, we will contemplate a cinematographic work based on a part of the universe of the so-called 'Queen of Crime', a story with suspense and a mystery that will leave you head over heels, but that fortuitously will be solved by one of Christie's most beloved characters, who has won in this edition, the majority of the movie-loving public of detective enigmas.

Los misterios policíacos tienen un nivel de magnetismo que nadie puede resistir, ¿o eres capaz de eludirlos? Un caso de asesinato, un robo, un fraude ilegal, todos somos curiosos ante esa clase de enigmas. Agatha Christie fue una gran desarrolladora del género, con más de 60 novelas escritas, varias de ellas dedicadas al género romántico y 14 cuentos con el seúdonimo Mary Westmacott. También fue una gran dramaturga especializada en teatro, con dos obras teatrales destacadas las cuales fueron “La ratonera” y “Testigo de cargo”.

En esta ocasión, contemplaremos una obra cinematográfica basada en una parte del universo de la llamada ‘Reina del crimen’, una historia con suspenso y un misterio que te dejará de cabeza, pero que fortuitamente será resuelto por uno de los personajes más consentidos de Christie y, que se ha ganado en esta edición, la mayoría del público cinéfilo amante de los enigmas detectivescos.

A Haunting in Venice is a crime mystery fantasy film directed by and starring British actor and director Kenneth Branagh. The screenplay was written by Michael Green and based on the novel The Apples by British writer Agatha Christie. The film is the third installment in the Hercule Poirot saga, the previous Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Death on the Nile (2022) also being directed by and starring Branagh.

The cast consisted of Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot, Tina Fey as Ariadne Oliver, Kelly Reilly as Rowena Drake, Michelle Yeoh as Joyce Raynolds, Jamie Dornan as Mr. Ferrier, Kyle Allen as Maxime Gerard, Emma Laird as Desdemonand Holland, Camille Cottin as Olga Seminoff, Riccardo Scamarcio as Vitale Portfoglio and Jude Hill as Leopold Ferrier.

Music direction was by Hildur Guðnadóttir, cinematography by Haris Zambarloukos, and editing by Lucy Donaldson. The production consisted of Ridley Scott, Kenneth Branagh, Judy Hofflund, and Kevin J. A Haunting in Venice was released on September 15 in U.S. theaters, running 103 minutes and grossing nearly $122 million. Then, in November of this year, it was released on the Disney+ streaming platform, along with the other two films in the Poirot saga.

Plot

In post-war Italy, specifically in the city of Venice, resides the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, who now enjoys a life full of joy away from mysteries. Although people continue to request his accurate and effective services, Poirot shows no interest in solving police enigmas and just wants to enjoy a normal life.

All seemed quiet until he received an unexpected visit from an old friend, Ariadne Oliver, a mystery writer hungry for her next success since her last novel was bruised by the critics. Oliver proposes an offer to Poirot that even he can't refuse, a medium with supposedly real psychic abilities, who has been invited to a séance to be held on Halloween night at the home of Mrs. Rowena Drake.

Detective Poirot, intrigued, but at the same time reluctantly, is convinced by his friend to attend such a place, where it is said that it was an orphanage during World War II and that children were tortured by the doctors and nurses who attended the site. Determined to break with the belief in ghosts and expose the fraudulent face of that medium, Poirot is unexpectedly confronted with a murder mystery that occurred during that night. Now the detective, unwittingly, will have an enigma on his hands that he must solve.

My opinion

Being faithful to the gothic style of "The Duchess of Death" I think Kenneth Branagh did a great job together with Haris Zambarloukos in the cinematographic art of the film. The vivid structures and colors, contrasting with a gloomy setting full of ominous, squalid, and creepy walls, make a good allusion to the sense of the plot.

What I loved the most were the performances, I think most of the actors did a great job in each role they played, especially Branagh, who gets the most praise, as he made the role his own, as if he had a second personality. His loose, simple, cynical, arrogant, and shrewd way of playing this iconic character was what kept me most convinced to stay until the end.

The costumes looked like something out of a fantasy world, every vivid, crisp, and colorful detail contrasted like a lit banner against the darkness. The setting is mesmerizing, along with the camera angle and editing that allow details to be perceived from an unusual perspective.

While I found the plot rather cliché, accompanied by predictable events that were ruled by obviousness, the good use of tempo in the dialogues made me connect better with the story. Although I failed to connect more with the film, I felt that everything relied on the good performance of the main actor in the cast and that there was nothing else. It was missing, for me, a more impetuous ingredient to not feel that the plot is like the rest, but that did not detract from how entertaining the film was, and you gradually get to know the story of the characters who became suspects in a crime.

The resolution, in my opinion, was handled well, leaving no loose ends and highlighting conclusions that could not be resolved at the time. Although it seems like a film with a realistic plot and events, it has a touch of fantasy that leaves you pensive for a few moments and leaves you in suspense to know if it is real or not.

Siendo fiel al estilo gótico de “La duquesa de la muerte” pienso que Kenneth Branagh hizo un gran trabajo junto con Haris Zambarloukos en el arte cinematográfico de la película. Las estructuras y colores vívidos, que contrastan con una ambientación lúgubre llena de paredes ominosas, míseras y horripilantes, hacen una buena alusión al sentido de la trama.

Lo que más me encantó fueron las interpretaciones, creo que la mayoría de los actores hizo un gran trabajo en cada rol que le tocó llevar, especialmente Branagh, quien se lleva más los elogios, ya que hizo que ese papel fuera suyo, como si portara una segunda personalidad. Su manera tan suelta, sencilla, cínica, arrogante y sagaz de interpretar a este personaje icónico fue lo que más me mantuvo convencido de quedarme hasta el final.

El vestuario parecía sacado de un mundo de fantasía, cada detalle vivaz, nítido y colorido contrastaba como un estandarte encendido en contra de la oscuridad. La ambientación es fascinante, junto con el ángulo y montaje de cámara que dejaba percibir los detalles desde una perspectiva inusual.

Si bien, la trama me pareció bastante cliché, acompañada de sucesos previsibles que se dejaban gobernar por la obviedad, el buen uso del tempo en los diálogos hizo que conectara mejor con la historia. Aunque siento que me faltó enlazarme más con la película, percibí que todo recaía en la buena actuación del actor principal del elenco y que no había nada más. Hacía falta, para mí, un ingrediente más impetuoso para no sentir que la trama es como el resto, pero eso no desgastaba lo entretenido que era el film, y vas conociendo gradualmente la historia de los personajes que se convirtieron en sospechosos de un crimen.

La resolución, a mi parecer, fue llevada de buena manera, sin dejar cabos sueltos y resaltando conclusiones que no se pudieron resolver en su momento. Aunque parece una película con una trama y sucesos realistas, tiene un toque de fantasía que te deja pensativo por unos momentos, y que te deja en suspenso de saber si aquello era real o no.

Conclusions

A Haunting in Venice with Kenneth Branagh at the helm, is a film that in my case was very entertaining to watch. The setting is hypnotic, along with the colors of the costumes, the structures, and the details of the period. It has that touch of humor that gives it that pleasant feeling that stimulates the viewer; unless you are immutable to this type of emotion.

It has good performances, the cast is very professional and knows how to carry very well the pressures of comedy and suspense that inhabit the atmosphere. The adaptation of the original story, although very faithful, Branagh managed to give it a few shoots of mischief and shrewdness, giving another attribute to an iconic character highly valued by the British writer.

Tiene buenas actuaciones, el elenco es muy profesional y que sabe llevar muy bien las presiones de comedia y suspenso que habitan en la atmósfera. La adaptación de la historia original, aunque es muy fiel, Branagh consiguió darle unos brotes de picardía y sagacidad, dándole otro atributo a un personaje icónico muy valorado por la escritora británica.
