From the producers of Cocaine Bear (2022) today I come to talk about a funny comedy, with a theme that seemed buried years ago. It is a story that brings out laughs, with black humor condescending, full of jokes that land very well and that makes us remember that time full of heavy bullying, strange teachers, small school tribes like nerds, popular, otakus, bullies, weirdos, among others.
We live in a time where humor, in general, is being strongly reprimanded, as fragility is more and more susceptible, coercing people, especially public figures, to think their words well before saying something. I'm glad that comedies like these are still being made, which make fun of stereotypes and ameliorating social stigma. If you like this kind of humor, which is not afraid of the consequences of satirizing a certain image, then stick around for this review to tell you more about this movie and give you my opinion.

De los productores de Cocaine Bear (2022) hoy vengo a hablar de una divertida comedia, con una temática que parecía sepultada hace años. Una historia que saca risas, con un humor negro bien condesando, plagado de chistes que aterrizan muy bien y que nos hacen recordar a aquella época llena de bullyng pesado, profesores extraños, pequeñas tribus escolares como nerds, populares, otakus, bullies, raros, entre otros.
Vivimos en una época donde el humor en general está siendo fuertemente reprendido, ya que la fragilidad es cada vez más susceptible, coaccionando a las personas, especialmente a las figuras públicas, a pensar bien sus palabras antes de decir algo, me alegra que todavía se sigan haciendo comedias como estas, que se burlan de los estereotipos aminorando el estigma social. Si te gusta este tipo de humor, que no le teme a las consecuencias por satirizar cierta imagen, entonces quédate en esta reseña para hablarte más de esta película y otorgarte mi opinión.

Bottoms, is an American teen comedy film directed by Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, who is well known for her previous comedy film Shiva Baby (2020). Seligman co-wrote the screenplay with Rachel Sennott, who is also cast as one of the main leads playing the role of PJ. Joining Sennott is Ayo Edebiri as Josie, also in a lead role, with the rest of the cast consisting of Ruby Cruz as Hazel, Havana Rose Liu as Isabel, Kaia Gerber as Brittany, Nicholas Galitzine as Jeff, Miles Fowler as Tim and Marshawn Lynch as Mr. G.
Music direction was provided by Leo Birenberg and Charli XCX and photography by Maria Rusche. Production was shaped by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman, through Brownstone Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), and Orion Pictures. The film was released on August 25, 2023, on the Prime Video streaming platform, with a running time of 92 minutes. The film has grossed over $11 million so far.

Plot
PJ and Josie are two unpopular lesbian girls who in their senior year of high school decide to stop being virgins. Having a slim chance to do so, a miracle happens that allows them to pick up girls, thanks to an unexpected misunderstanding, both come up with the idea of making a kind of self-defense club for women within the school, to pick up and have sex with pretty girls, taking advantage of the growing threat of the rival high school that persecutes and humiliates the students of their school due to the soccer game season.
The plan seems to take effect, but both protagonists' lives are threatened by a boy on their school's soccer team who disagrees with their club. With punches and punches, and a strange league of teenagers with absurd attitudes, the two girls will have to stand their ground and at the same time preserve their friendship.

Teniendo una ínfima probabilidad para lograrlo, ocurre un milagro que les otorga la oportunidad para ligar con chicas, gracias a un inesperado mal entendido, a ambas se les ocurre hacer una especie de club de defensa personal para mujeres dentro de la escuela, con la intención de ligar y tener sexo con chicas lindas, aprovechándose de la creciente amenaza de la secundaria rival que persigue y humilla a los estudiantes de su escuela debido a la temporada de juegos de futbol.
El plan parece surtir efecto, pero las mentiras de ambas protagonistas se ven amenazadas por un chico del equipo de futbol de su escuela que no está de acuerdo con su club. Con golpes y manotazos, y una extraña liga de adolescentes con actitudes absurdas, las dos chicas deberán mantenerse en pie y al mismo tiempo preservar su amistad.
My opinion
Paying homage to those classic films of the late 90s and early 2000s, director Emma Seligman returns with another more irreverent work than usual. At first, when I saw the cover of the film, what caught my attention the most was the title (few will know why), since the rest had nothing else special, I thought it would be one of those boring movies about teenagers that are being made a lot lately, but after taking a look at the directing and production cast, I began to see this film with different eyes.
It wasn't even ten minutes into the film when I started to laugh out loud, what I liked the most were the dialogues and the ridiculous situations that the main characters were exposed to. I liked that PJ and Josie's personalities were so different; besides the good chemistry between them, which gave a strong and attractive touch to the structure of their characters' witticisms. This formula, overused to exhaustion, still works perfectly and this film proves it.
The rest of the cast, although I didn't know their stories in depth, let us see how crazy and laughable they are with just a few personality traits. The witticisms and that way of making fun of feminism, turning it into a simple façade for a repugnant objective, made the plot have a comic sense, satirizing all the social statuses we find in all those teen movies about high schools set in past decades, with popular music and costumes of the time.
I knew that a film made by Emma Seligman and starring Rachel Sennott, would not disappoint me, they are the perfect pair to turn serious issues such as bullying and school homophobia, into absurd areas where nothing has coherence and sense, and instead of feeling offended by it, you laugh; as the jokes work very well and perfectly touch that instinct inherent in human beings to laugh at the tragic, stimulus that both screenwriters seem to know very well.
Rachel Sennott had already dazzled me in Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) by director Halina Reijn, another American slasher comedy with black humor, her character in this film was the one that made me laugh the most because of her story and her absurd dialogues, until taking us to a catastrophic ending where human stupidity was the real killer.

Haciendo homenaje a aquellas películas clásicas de finales de los 90 y principios del 2000, la directora Emma Seligman vuelve con otra obra más irreverente de lo habitual. Al principio, cuando vi la portada de la película, lo que me llamó más la atención fue el título (pocos sabrán porqué), ya que lo demás no tenía más nada de especial, pensé que sería una de esas películas aburridas sobre adolescentes que últimamente se están haciendo mucho, pero después de darle una ojeada al reparto de dirección y producción, comencé a ver este film con otros ojos.
No pasaron ni diez minutos cuando empecé a soltar carcajadas de risas, lo que más me gustó fueron los diálogos aunados a las situaciones ridículas con las que las protagonistas se exponían. Me gustó mucho que la personalidad de PJ y Josie fuera tan dispareja; además de la buena química que había entre ambas, lo que le daba ese toque fuerte y atractivo en la estructura de las ocurrencias de sus personajes. Esta fórmula, muy usada hasta el cansancio, todavía funciona perfectamente y esta película lo demuestra.
El resto del elenco, aunque no conocí con profundidad sus historias, nos dejaban ver con solo manifestaciones de rasgos en su personalidad, lo disparatados y risibles que son. Las ocurrencias y esa manera de burlarse del feminismo, convirtiéndolo en una simple fachada para un objetivo repugnante, hicieron que la trama tuviese un sentido cómico, satirizando todos los estatus sociales que encontramos en todas esas películas de adolescentes sobre secundarias ambientadas en décadas pasadas, con música y vestuarios populares de la época.
Sabía que una película realizada por Emma Seligman y protagonizada por Rachel Sennott, no me decepcionaría, son el par perfecto para convertir temas serios como el bullyng y la homofobia escolar, en ámbitos absurdos donde nada tiene coherencia y sentido, y en vez sentirte ofendido por ello, te ríes; ya que los chistes funcionan muy bien y tocan perfectamente ese instinto inherente en el ser humano de reírse de lo trágico, estimulo que ambas guionistas parecen conocer muy bien.
Rachel Sennott ya me había deslumbrado en Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) de la directora Halina Reijn, otra comedia estadounidense de género slasher con humor negro, su personaje en esta película fue el que más me hizo gracia por su historia y sus diálogos absurdos, hasta llevarnos a un final catastrófico donde la estupidez humana fue el verdadero asesino.
Conclusions
With a funny humor that you should not take seriously Bottoms, is an American comedy that pays homage to those absurd movies when I was a teenager. With good, well-placed dialogue that drags out incoherent situations, exaggerated characters that bathe in the ridiculous, and an excellent production riddled with good ideas to make you laugh. This movie, in my opinion, is powerful enough to give you a good time.
I have seen it twice and still laugh out loud at the hilarious events in its content. The cast is excellent and I think it is one of the best comedy movies to come out this year. If you want to have a good time, I recommend this film.

Con un humor divertido el cual no debes tomarte en serio Bottoms, es una comedia estadounidense que hace homenaje a aquellas absurdas películas de cuando yo era adolescente. Con buenos diálogos bien posicionados que arrastran situaciones incoherentes, personajes exagerados que se bañan en lo ridículo y una excelente producción plagada con buenas ideas para hacerte reír. Esta película, en mi opinión, es lo suficientemente poderosa para hacerte pasar un buen rato.
La he visto dos veces y todavía me río a carcajadas de los hilarantes sucesos en su contenido. El reparto es excelente y pienso que es una de las mejores películas de comedia que han salido este año. Si quieres pasar un buen rato, definitivamente te recomiendo este film.
